We just from the "Exploring Belize: Life in the Rainforest" Road Scholar trip to southern Belize and I would highly recommend this trip to anyone interested in Central America or birds. The Cotton Tree Lodge was a wonderful place to stay with very helpful staff, beautiful grounds and incredible food. Our guide, Agapito Pop, was an amazing birder and very knowledgable about local sites and history. Belize has an abundance of birds this time of year and this was one of my favorite vacations!

Aptly named, this program really did give us true insight into life in the rainforest. And even though we were supposedly visiting during the "dry" season, we experienced plenty of downpours. While the weather precluded some of our planned activities, like swimming in the nearby cave system, it did not dampen our spirits. We sallied forth each day from our jungle lodge to learn about medicinal plants from the local medicine man, to tour Mayan ruins in the area, to visit a chocolate factory in Punta Gorda, to eat lunch with a cacao farmer's family after touring his finca, and to visit a Mayan educational center where we talked with both students and faculty and shared a schoolday lunch. We also got to meet with an ex-pat who started his own environmental organization to save the reef, but we missed out on talking to a native politician since our visit coincided with the national elections in which he was heavily involved. Our farewell dinner was graced by a performing arts troupe from the Garifuna culture who had us joining in their drum circle and dancing. The Cotton Tree Lodge is most comfortable and our meals were expertly prepared and delicious. Only the long drive to reach it over bumpy unimproved roads caused us any discomfort, a small price to pay for an in-depth look at life in the rainforest of southern Belize, both contemporary and ancient.
