This tour was magical--from our immersion in the fictional worlds of Jane Austen and Thomas Hardy, among other authors, to the spectacular prehistoric sites that appear in their novels. The Iron Age hill fort, Maiden Castle, was a favorite of mine as was the brisk beauty of the seaport, Lyme Regis. Many, many thanks to Bel Glover and Kevin Flude, our guides on this journey. Kevin's knowledge was extraordinarily wide-ranging. He informed and entertained us with wit and insight. All impossible to forget. See for yourselves!

This program was outstanding in every respect. The leaders were exceptional. If another tour like this were offered in another part of England with different authors, I would sign up immediately.

Great experience--a whirlwind of activity and learning. Leaders were interesting and helpful. I highly recommend this trip if you are active and curious.

My favorite part of this trip was Jane Austen's home at Chawton. Seeing her writing desk, displays on how she edited her work, and other artifacts made this stop very special! I enjoyed this trip!

Great program. Learned a lot about certain English authors (especially Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy and Agatha Christie) while visiting places important to their lives. Also stopped at many other historic sites in southern and western England including Stonehenge,a hill fort, Roman ruins, churches large and small, historic villages and seacoast towns, and several stately homes. Ended with a great day in London. Highly recommended.

This program was truly a semester's worth of study without having to sit through a traditional course! Because of the expertise of Kevin, Annette, and my fellow participants, I will be able to construct a comprehensive sabbatical presentation for my English Department. All involved have inspired me to continue the study of English history, literature, and culture through Road Scholar programs. Kudos!

Don't even need to have read the books to enjoy the tour. We all got inspired though and bought the books during the tour. Kevin made everything very exciting, I think because he was so enthusiastic. He particularly wanted us to appreciate Thomas Hardy. I came home ready to start a Thomas Hardy poetry group. First time I ever really appreciated poetry. We visited wonderful little villages, ate great food and stayed in delightful hotels. The tour leaders and even the bus driver ate with us and we had some fascinating discussions about England, culture and current events. Hope you take the trip and have a great time. Say hello to Kevin for me.

If you love English literature, this program is not to be missed! With our wonderful leader, Annette, and our very knowledgeable lecturer, Kevin, we followed in the footsteps of Jane Austen, Thomas Hardy, Agatha Christie, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and Charles Dickens. Kevin was always reading to us from letters, novels, and poems -- we'd never been to an Elderhostel before in which we were totally immersed in so much literature. We visited the medieval village of Lacock, where many literary films have been set, enjoyed a cream tea in the Pump Room in Bath, the focal point for society in Austen's day, toured the homes of Austen, Christie, Dickens, and Hardy, strolled the streets of the picturesque port of Dartmouth, visited the Abbotsbury Swannery, the only place in the world where you can walk through a colony of nesting mute swans, climbed to the top of Maiden Castle, one of Europa's largest hill forts, and in Dorchester saw the places that are mentioned in Hardy's "Mayor of Casterbridge" and even stayed in the hotel which is featured in the novel. And these were just a few of the highlights! On our own we could've never seen and experienced all we did with Elderhostel in about 12 days.
