ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

This is a wonderful trip covering many different experiences and locations in Britain, Wales and Scotland. Highly recommended!

This was a fascinating trip covering the most "quintessential" features of Britain. The July 2014 group hit a "heat wave" in the UK, somewhat muggy and rather hot. Of course, that also meant we had very little rain during the trip. For anyone booking for July I would advise bringing summer clothes (the same summer clothes you would wear at home) and add the layers as needed. My only complaint about the hotels was the hotel in Chester, no air conditioning, no ventilation and it was not well located. Those nights in Chester were not pleasant. We particularly enjoyed North Wales, Yorkshire and Scotland. The first few days in London were very active, maybe a bit much. Our group had Kevin in London, then Peter for the remainder of the journey. Peter is delightful and we were fortunate to be a part of this wonderful group of travelers. Bel did a great job of managing all the logistics.

Altogether, an excellent program. Good leaders who shared their knowledge of English history and literature. Having heard not to expect too much about the food in Britain, we were pleasantly surprised at how good it was. And dining in pubs and small tea rooms was delicious and great fun. We visited lots of castles and cathedrals and walked the moors and studied ancient Roman ruins - all part of the experience! An energetic program - wear your walking shoes. There were definitely some problems with the hotel in Edinburgh that need to be addressed before the next trip. But if England is on your list, go for it.

George & Cathy, Philadelphia Number of Programs: 8 Date Attended: 06/09/14-06/27/14 What a wonderful trip. The focus on education was special and truly "Quintessential Britain." Great jobs by Kevin, Peter, and Ros. Stuart did a fine job of getting us to where we needed to be, safely, on time and provided for our enroute thirst needs. The hotel accommodations were comfortable and especially noted was the Three Ways Hotel which was quaint with a secluded garden and excellent food/desserts. Appreciated were the choices of food at dinner and the wide variety of breakfast options with lots of fresh fruit. The group bonded well and as usual we learned so much from descriptions of their travels and backgrounds. We are looking forward to continuing our travel experience with Road Scholar.

This was my dream vacation and was more than I could have imagined! I am an Anglophile, so all the information shared by Kevin and Peter was terrific. Wish I could drive like Stuart, and have the patience and conviviality of Ros. As I adjust to EST, I am remembering MORE and MORE. This trip was VERY active, and some days we were on the go for over 7 hours. LOTS of walking. Loved the group and miss them all, hope to see them again. I was, too, surprised by the food. Just ask us what ham salad is in the UK! Rooms were fine. All I need is room for the suitcase, a bed and a shower. Very clean and SO few bugs which helps with open windows with no screens. It was the best time of my life. Can't recommend this trip enough.

What an extraordinary trip. Thanks Alvin, Dave, and Gordon for your views. Now comes the fun part; this morning I woke up thinking about the vicar's cottage in Haworth and yesterday it was Stonehenge. And of course the leaders and our members are still very much in my thoughts. (So was my suitcase, but it arrived today.) All that said, I do think the trip was a bit much for this 79-year-old. I did get sick and I did take a couple of days to sleep, but was able to go to everything I really wanted, and I don't know what more I would leave out. I am so glad I pushed myself but recovery at home is slow. I'll repeat: that trip was extraordinary, and though I'll never take another like it, I am so grateful for the experience.

Wonderful trip, fulfilled all expectstions. Be aware that a lot of time is spent on the coach to cover the area (over 1600 miles on our trip).

This was an outstanding trip. We learned so much and if asked there is little that I would change in this highly organized and wonderful trip. It met and actually exceeded my expectations. We saw and did so much during our stay there. I left with a great understanding and appreciation of Britain. Our tour director, Ros, was just wonderful. She is a very caring person and truly cared about the needs and wishes of each person during our trip. We also had highly trained and professional tour guides (Kevin and Peter) throughout the trip and we learned so much from them. Their true enthusiasm for Britain and doing this tour was very evident. They had so much knowledge that they wanted to share with us. I also liked the other people that went on this trip. Very friendly and we all became like family. We also had a wonderful bus driver (Stuart), so between Rose, Stuart, and our tour director, the trips were never boring. It is hard to believe that we actually traveled over 1,600 miles during this 18 day trip. We were very pleasantly surprised at how good the food was. We had planned to take a day or two off from hotel food, but we never did. The food was really excellent. I was also happy to come home and realize that we had little out of pocket expenses for this trip. Concerning hotels, you have to be aware that Britain is different than the USA. The hotels were very nice and clean. The rooms were small and ice like air conditioning seems to be an option not a requirement in Britain. The rooms were small, little space to put clothes but we adjusted and we slept well at night. This is not a restful trip but we did have an option of not participating in the trip for the day if we wanted. Personally I wanted to see it all. Thank you Ros, Peter, Kevin and Stuart. You made this trip very special.

Need better hotel rooms. No air conditioning in rooms except Vanderbilt . Excellent air conditioning there. Locations in all hotels are adequate since there is no extra time except day you get there. Food too much and no trouble if you are a fish eater. Fish prepared better than most places in US. GAINED TOO MUCH WEIGHT. would give up food for better back rooms. Beds fine. Bathroom clean. Water strong and hot water. Flushing not good in all hotels. Program excellent but very active, morning and afternoon till 5 to 6 pm. Very active. Loved hiking parts and rural areas

The Quintessential Britain was a great mix of history, culture, nature, and physical activity (walking, hiking). The program director and instructors were extremely well organized, friendly, supportive, and kept our group of 27 very interested in the day to day activities. The coach driver gave us safe and comfortable transportation all over the UK. We had organized lectures, dinners, and field trips. For free time, we were also given adequate information and instructions about choices for places to visit and restaurants. All of us were like an extended family. It was our first Road Scholar experience, and we were completely satisfied.

This was a wonderful trip. As a first-time Road Scholar participant, I was really pleased with the quality of the program. A perfect blend of education and adventure. I'll definitely go on more of these!

This truly was a tour of Quintessential Britain, where you visit the tops sights all over Britain (except N. Ireland), so you can truly say you have visited Britain. Road Scholar again provided me with a truly educational and well-run tour, and I learned a lot about British history. From The British Museum to Stonehenge to Shakespeare's home to the Lochs of Scotland, this tour really provided "Quintessental Britain" for me.

I am a very independent introvert and was concerned just how a tour would work for me. What a wonderful time we had on this tour!! My individuality and needs were totally respected. The choices of where we visited taught me to trust that even if I had heard nothing about a place or thought it wouldn't interest me that there were indeed very fine reasons Road Scholar had chosen them. I can't say enough for this trip. It far exceeded my expectations and then some. If you can just do one program in a lifetime, do this one.

I would highly recommend traveling with Road Scholar if you would like a worry free highly educational, well organized, fun, adventurous trip. The sights are amazing, the instructors fun and educational, the support staff phenomenal, fellow travelers are very interesting, food and hotels are great, and transportation on the coach excellent. This was our first trip and we will certainly do more.
