Excellent value! Includes the major "must see" sites of south Iceland. Most fun was riding the "Duck" on Jokulsarlon glacial lagoon.

Iceland is more than a location on the map to me now. I have a far better understanding of their history, culture, and their amazing natural resources and challenges. Fascinating place!

Great trip. While it was active, I was expecting more activity, based on RoadScholar's rating, and other trips in the most active group. One concern is that, for the size of the group (24), there was only a single leader, which I feel is not safe for a group this large on hikes.

Road Scholar's response:
Thank you for your review. From now on, any walking program with 10 or more participants will have a second staff person.

This was the first Road Scholar trip that my husband and I attended. It was a marvelous trip with beautiful scenery, good accommodations and food and interesting traveling companions. I had one concern, however. There were 20 people for one leader who could not tell what was happening at the back of the group or that several people had fallen behind. He said that there used to be 2 leaders but that one had been cut out apparently to save expenses. The strongest hiker in our group took on the role of rear leader which was not his responsibility. I am very concerned about the wisdom and safety of having one leader and hope Road Scholar will reconsider its position before something adverse happens. Several people did not keep up and I think we were just lucky that nothing happened. I will ask more questions about safety and numbers of leaders before signing up for another hiking trip.

A spectacularly beautiful country with incredible geology. We were so fortunate to have sunny and dry weather for the entire trip. The hikes were challenging, but not overly so. Particularly enjoyed the massive waterfalls, geyers, black sand beaches and Glacier Lagoon. It was also fascinating to go into the interior of the country and see the stark volcanic land. The accommodations were comfortable and the food was plentiful. We were very lucky with the weather. Be sure to bring serious rain and wind gear for the typical weather in Iceland.

A fascinating country.

A great trip. Wonderful volcanic terrain, waterfalls, and culture. Program choices good. Geothermal technology world class. Expect generally overcast skies with intermittent rain with strong wind at times; a waterproof parka, rain pants, and waterproof hiking boots are musts. A light plastic poncho or umbrella might let you down. We forded several streams with rocky bottoms, barefoot OK but I would recommend sport sandals. No need for dress shoes or clothing for evening meals; clean dry casuals OK. One should be a fairly strong hiker to be able to pause for photos or contemplation without holding up the group. Hotels had blackout curtains for sleeping, great food though sometimes a little skimpy at dinner for a big guy, 2 had no free WiFi. A small netbook computer was handy to exchange photos and for Web access. I had no need for a heavy fleece jacket or pants, just a light wool shirt and light polypro underlayer the coldest day hiking and on the glacier lagoon. Non cotton hiking pants are desirable.

This program (2013) was excellent. Good rain gear is a must. Minimal (if any) need for dress up clothes. I'd recommend reading Independent People and the Insight Guide before going and taking the Lonely Planet Iceland on the trip.
