Went on my first Road Scholar trip . Costa Rica multi sport adventure. Wow!mit exceeded my expectations for everything. Very educational, lots of nature, great activity. Very organized. The food was outstanding. The guides were passionate about nature, ecology and quite involved in leading us all. A very good first impression of a Roapd Scholar

We had good activity levels making moderate demands upon our physical condition. Good education about ecology, and Costa Rica's high standards of excellence about preserving our environment. Very good accommodations, and it helped to have two buses--space while on the road.

This trip exceeded our expectations in every way. First, our guide Luis was outstanding--he continually found all sorts of birds, mammals and plants, then waited patiently while we each saw and discussed these "most beautiful" specimens. Group members were welcoming and actively participated in the various activities, including hikes (muddy and dry), dance lessons, kayaking and ziplining. Accommodations were comfortable and representative of each region we visited; healthy food choices were always available. Wonderful experience!

This was a great trip, well within reasonable physical activity guidelines as published...our group ranged from late 50's to 82 years of age. The "multi-sport" description simply means that kayaking, hiking, rafting, and one morning of zip lining were included...actually a well rounded trip with nature and cultural aspects emphasized as well.

The Costa Rico Multisport program we attended was wonderful. Our tour guide was informative, knowledgeable and was as excited about all the adventures we were on as we were. The wildlife was everywhere and the variety was overwhelming. Our guide spotted all the birds and other wildlife and was completely knowledgeable on all. The food was great the accommodations clean and welcoming. There was no activity that I can say I wasn't amazed by. We have been on many tours, but the balance between travel, events and touring was perfect. The folks on the trip were like-minded and shared our expectations. It was as if we were friends for life. Thanks to all, I greatly enjoyed your company and hope to be in touch again and maybe be able to tour together again. My wife and I will tour again with Road Scholar ( we are looking through thru tour offerings for our next trip now). Bravo Road Scholar

I just came back from the multisport adventure tour in Costa Rica. It was fabulous. We went hiking through beautiful forests, some of the hikes were tough but worth it. We went kayaking and saw many birds, monkees, turtles, and caiman and many beautiful trees and plants. We also went white water rafting which was fun and canoeing. We went swimming in the warm ocean which was great. We were always doing something active and fun and I thought it was planned out perfectly the accomodations were nice. I would highly recommend this for someone looking for an active trip. I loved it!

This trip was interesting and full of new experiences. You could get out of your comfort zone and try many new activities but at a level that was fun and safe. The challenges were well handled and fun!

This program was a true adventure with a great variety of activities. Our guide was very knowledgeable, showing us and identifying all kinds of plants, birds, and other animals throughout the trip. The tours of the chocolate and coffee plantation were excellent. My favorite excursions were kayaking in the rain forest, white water rafting, and sea kayaking which included snorkeling. It was all awesome!

I highly recommend Costa Rica Rim to Shore, multi-sport adventure if you are interested in birds, plants, animals mixed in with some really fun adventures. If you are a fit elder and can "go with the flow"

This multi-sport trip was my introduction to Costa Rica. Tour leader Erick Guzman and driver Rafael Vargas were a superlative team. The varied activities, tours, and lectures kept all of us busy and encouraged by the glory of Costa Rica. This trip was incredible!

I just returned from this program. It met all my expectations and more. I would advise taking a notebook to write down all the names of the birds you see so you can match them to the pictures you take. Our guide, Roger, could spot a bird, a monkey and many more things hidden in trees and help the rest of us find it. If you have any artificial knees or hips or joint distress, hiking sticks are essential for a couple of the more strenuous hikes as are long socks to avoid chaffing in the boots necessary in the wet rainforest. If you are sharing a room with anyone but a spouse, be advised that some of the hotel rooms don't have room for both luggage and people and are very dark. I had a reading light, but needed a flashlight.

We really enjoyed this trip. The size of the group (15) seemed just about right. Luis was an engaging guide who kept the group energized for the next activity. The activity level of moderately challenging is an accurate description. Although we were able to see many different types of flora and fauna, this trip is more about engaging in active sports, and is not a bird watching tour. But if you like to try different activities this is a wonderful adventure.

A wonderful trip. Our guide, Leo, couldn't have been better. He is an avid birder and loved sharing his knowledge of and enthusiasm for Costa Rica's wildlife and plants. He was very thoughtful about arranging activities that were not on the itinerary just because he knew we would enjoy them. He also has a very cute sense of humor. The activities were well suited to the abilities of the participants. Lodging and food were excellent. Expect interesting and like minded traveling companions.

This trip was thoroughly enjoyable and exceeded my expectations. Our guide Leo was wonderful - great with logistics, helpful, informative, and fun. It might have been nice to spend less time on a bus, but the bus rides were actually not bad. The scenery was always interesting and often spectacular and we learned a lot en-route. The rest of the trip was even better. We had multiple boat cruises which were great for viewing wildlife and scenery. We engaged in hikes, paddling trips, and other fun activities. The accommodations were good and in amazing locations. I quickly learned never to leave my camera behind, even if just walking from my room to the dining hall as there was no telling what great photo-ops I might encounter. There was a nice balance between scheduled time and free time to explore, photograph, swim in the pools, or hang out with new friends at the waterside bars. I used bug repellent once (in the woods at Tortuguero). We had a couple downpours at Sarapiqui that enhanced the rain forest experience. Used a lot of sun screen. I recommend taking a camera with a good zoom lens for photographing birds, lizards, monkeys and crocodiles. It helped that we could get clothes laundered at Sarapiqui.

Diana from Grand Rapids, MI. number of programs: 2. Dates: 2/24-3/6/14 Terrific trip - no complaints. Even enjoyed being awakened by howling monkeys at 4:00 a.m. Wonderful wild life, great guide (Leo), and interesting and fun traveling companions.

This was a wonderful trip and met our every expectation. Our guide Leo was extremely knowledge about birds, and we saw over 60 species. The long bus rides were always broken up with an interesting stop.

Bring hiking boots & collapsible walking poles. Bring plenty of plastic bags for wet garments. Pack a fleece jacket. Bring a bandana. Do not opt for the rubber boots for the hike to the almond tree at Selva Verde. If you really like wash cloths, pack some! Think about taking business cards to pass out to new friends. Bring Pepto Bismo tablets and Imodium. Be prepared to find beans & rice (& hot dogs!) on even breakfast buffets! Have in mind the exchange rate for your money, such as $10 = 5,000 colones.

Our Costa Rica Rim to Shore trip was exceptional. It combined the right amount of activity with the opportunity to experience different parts of the country. Our guide, Leo, was wonderful, very knowledgeable and very interested in providing an outstanding experience for everyone. The participants in our group could not have been nicer. Everyone was very enthusiastic about our experiences and we truly enjoyed each others company.

this is a truly wonderful experience, small group numbers made it easy to meet people and experience it with them. there was always the ability to opt out of an experience we didn't want to do, that made it easier for the group as a whole.

Just returned from the 1/20-1/30 Rim to Shore trip. I very much enjoyed all activities. I believe the success of the trip can be attributed to the professionalism, knowledge, patience, and good humor of our guide, Erick Castro. He is conscientious and very well organized. It was obvious that he cared about the welfare of everyone on the trip. I also appreciated the fact that all members of the tour were considerate of the others and everyone displayed good humor throughout the trip, even in pouring down rain. Individuals were always on time for events and helped each other when needed. There was a lot of laughter and good natured teasing. Everyone seemed to get along well and to have been well prepared for the physical nature of the excursions. One criticism; Road Scholar should make it clear that there will be no access to an ATM except in San Jose. Colones should be purchased at the airport or in San Jose. Although most vendors accept American currency, depending on this means taking a risk with exchange rates. I would recommend this tour for people who enjoy physical activity and a fast pace. Personally, I would have enjoyed more water activities including a dedicated snorkeling activity. However, the schedule provides a good mix of hiking and boating; all a lot of fun as well as educational. Thank you to my 14 tour mates and to Erick Castro for making this trip enjoyable. Just got back from this Rim to Shore trip on January 30, 2014, and was very pleased with the entire program and Erick Castro the guide. Would recommend this trip to any adult.

A minus ten on a scale of zero to ten. The chief "sport" is sitting on a bus. The Pacific beach is just a few kilometers from the mouth of the most polluted river in all of Costa Rica. Badly run zip line caused injuries. Much better opportunities to see wild life exist. Put it on your must miss list.

I agree with Lynn. This program DOES provide a wonderful opportunity to see the environment of Costa Rica, it's flora and fauna. We saw numerous species of birds and animals, while at the same time, we enjoyed numerous & varied sports activities. The "level of activity" was as stated: just moderately challenging.

The Rim to Shore Multi-Sport Adventure tour was a fabulous and inspirational trip. I'm certain our special guide, Luis was responsible for such wonderful memories of walking, hiking, kayaking, rafting, zip line, monkeys, caian and crocs, birds, butterflies, sea turtles and the incredible rain forest. This trip had it all. We were very active, but one could opt out of any activity. We had 9 in our group which seemed perfect. The activities were great, especially watching a giant sea turtle lay her eggs in a giant hole she had dug with just a flipper! I highly recommend this tour and would do it again in a heartbeat (as long as Luis was the guide again)! I loved it and it allowed me to meet so many of my fears head on! I'm grateful.

Our trip to Costa Rica was transformative. The colors, sounds, and sights we experienced were special. My wife and I traded the noise on CNN for the sounds of Howler Monkeys. We exchanged the hosts on FOX for a friendly guide named Louise Vargas. We traded our Congress for the jungle. We were sane for ten days.

Just returned from Costa Rica Rim to Shore 9/18-28. Fabulous trip made all the more special thanks to our guide, Luis. Walking, hiking, kayaking, rafting, zip line. Monkeys, crocs, birds, butterflies, sea turtles - This trip had it all. We were very active, but there was flexibility to opt out so no one was overwhelmed. We had 9 in our group and it seemed like a perfect number. Wonderful people! The activities were great. Perhaps the most special was seeing a 200+ pound sea turtle drop her eggs in a giant hole she had dug in the sand. Again - can't compliment Luis enough for leading us. I highly recommend this tour, but must be totally truthful. The lodge in Tortuguera left a lot to be desired. It was extremely hot and humid and the fan in the room didn't do much so some of us had 2 difficult nights. No hot water in the little sink, and "iffy" in the shower. But still SO worth it. I'd certainly do it again, but if you expect perfect lodgings it might not be for you. All of our experiences out shined that discomfort. We loved it.

Debbie from Arlington, TX Number of programs attended: 3

This was a fantastic program! If it sounds fun but you are a bit concerned about the physical activity keep in mind that it is age appropriate. We are not a bunch of 25 year olds. In fact some of the activities are downright easy. This was my first experience as a single and everyone was very inclusive. Luis, our guide, was organized and entertaining. Go for it!
