This was our first Road Scholar trip and it was fabulous! Our guide was phenominal, not only in his birding skills, but in his ability to help all members of the group see the birds. We saw over 280 species. Our group consisted of some very experienced birders as well as some beginners, but everyone was able to see as much as they could. The lodges were all remote and beautiful, and the pace of each day was just right - lots of time for birding but also some down time in between. Our guide Fito was an expert in natural history as well as bird ID - and we learned a lot about CR from him. We loved the trip and are planning to take the other birding trip RS offers to CR to see the places we didn't get to.

Great adventure - marvelous birding, great diversity of habitat & spectacular views of endemic species & counryside. Roger is a phenomenal birder who knows how to locate species and shares his expertise & enthusiasm with the entire group. Not to be missed! Cathy Williamson

Excellent guide, intuitive and knowledgeable. Sited over 370 bird species. Wonderful group of new birding friends. Close access to birds thru several boat trips along shores of Costa Rica Rivers. Don't miss it!

We saw many, many new species of birds in a variety of beautiful locations. Our leader was terrific and the other participants were delightful.

This was our 3rd Birding trip with Road Scholar, the 2nd time on Birding the Hot Spots. It is truly a wonderful trip!

Outstanding trip - saw some of the birds I had hoped to see and many more that I hadn't counted on. Fascinating country and hitting the hot spots made it even more so.

I really enjoyed our recent "Birding Hotspots of Costa Rica" trip. Besides seeing more birds than I ever imagined, we learned a great deal about Costa Rica and its environment. Leo was an excellent guide and Omar a very good, safe driver. The group was delightful as well. I look forward to another RoadScholar trip.

The trip was WONDERFUL! I had never birded in the tropics before and saw at least 250 life birds plus an additional 100 birds I had seen before. We had 11 people in our group plus the guide and bus driver. Everyone was congenial, punctual, and kind. The accommodations were all different and interesting. The food was good and plentiful. The boat rides were excellent and gave us unique views of the habitats. We also got plenty of exercise walking the trails. I would highly recommend this trip.

Great program! Great Guide! Saw 327 species of birds!

Wonderful program and experience! This may not be for "hard core" birders, but was great for anyone who has done some birding and is interested in expanding his/her exposure to tropical and migrant species. Our congenial group of 11 had 310 - 320 species for the 11 days. The diversity of both the birds and the sites visited is incredible. Costa Rica is a beautiful country; glad we were able to see as much of it as we did. (We flew down a few days early and saw some of the other sites before the program started.) Highly recommend!

Erick, the group leader, was outstanding. We saw over 300 species. His ability to find birds was unbelievable, even those that could barely be seen with binoculars. I'm sure he tired of our asking "HOW DID YOU SEE THAT?!?" In addition to finding them, he was able to identify the birds with limited visual information due to his extensive knowledge of calls, behavior, and habitat. Finally, he helped us all see nearly every bird, through the scope if possible. I have been birding for only 9 months and have often had trouble finding birds on other outings, but I saw 95% of these species. Erick has an infectious passion for the subject. And of course, the birds themselves were amazing.

This program exceeded my expectations. The guide made sure we got as much out of the program as we could. He searched for birds, made sure we all saw them and was extremely knowledgeable concerning all flora, fauna, the environment and history of the locations we visited. He was attentive to all of our needs and fostered group cohesion. We all had fun!

This is a fantastic trip. You don't have to be a very experienced birder to enjoy this trip, the guide and others in the group are very helpful. The birds are many and colorful.

I've been on many birding tours with professionals, and this trip, though about half the price, rates as high as any I've been on. Our local guide, Gilberth, is a highly skilled birder and extremely personable. He strived to make sure everyone saw every bird--very difficult in tropical forests--and kept us loose with his sense of humor and upbeat personality. A very enjoyable and rewarding experience.

This program provided an exceptional birding experience for birders whose level of experience was above average to very high. This great experience depended on our great guide, Gilberth (Chito), and the size of the group, six. Despite some comments to the contrary, you would definitely both actually see and identify a much lower number of hard to find birds in a group of more than eight.

We went for my 60th birthday and had a great time. Erick Castro, our guide, went out of his way to find as many birds as possible for us. He could call a lot of them in himself by imitating calls. He always tried to be sure everyone saw every bird. He handled the different birding expertise levels in the group with never ending patience. He was truly a great all-round guide. We saw over 340 species. Jack, our driver, got the bus in and out of spots I never thought the bus could go! The places we stayed were interesting. The food was good. It was a great 1st trip with Road Scholar! Kelly at Holbrook was very pleasant to work with too for making flight arrangements, etc. The trip exceeded my expectations! (The only caveat-if you have any back problems-a couple of the places have long bumpy dirt roads leading up to them-be sure to sit at the front of the bus to try to minimize back discomfort!!!!)

This was a fantastic trip. One feature, and there were many, that I especially liked was that we spent 2 nights at each destination and each one was a "birdy" place on its own. This meant we had time to do lots of birding with less time traveling to find birds. The guide, Gilberto or Chito as we called him was very knowledgable not only about the birds but about other aspects of the flora & fauna we encountered. Our group saw over 300 birds and I added over 200 to my life list. (First time in tropics birding--hopefully not the last).

The advance materials provided were very helpful and informative. Road Scholar & Holbrook Travel have created partnered to create a trip of a lifetime.

Terrific trip, well organized to see birds in a variety of habitats, and with an outstanding guide who was knowledgable about the history, culture, flora etc. of Costa Rica as well as the birds.

This is an excellent birding adventure, well organized and led by a very knowledgeable guide. The accomodations were spectacular, set in the midst of jungle, mountain, coastal and other scenic habitats. We saw over 300 species of birds and learned much about their conservation, lives and habitats, and also much about the beautiful country of Costa Rica.

If you love birds, this trip is for you. Guide Erick Guzman brought great enthusiasm, energy and remarkable birding skills to our group of friendly participants. We birded in various habitats ranging from dry Pacific coast to northern wetland jungle to rain forest and high mountain valley. In each location we saw many new species, some really spectacular. All together we listed well over 300 bird species. Accommodations were also excellent, reflecting the character of the locale. This was an awesome, very fun adventure. It was, as they say in Costa Rica, "pura vida".

I think Jane and Kay summed it up well. Wonderful guide, birds that were beautiful beyond description (yes, even the king vulture), gorgeous flowers, towering trees, flowing water, exotic creatures all added up to an unforgettable tropical adventure. And kudos also to our intrepid bus driver, Carlos, who kept us safe on some scary roads!

I was awed by our guide, Erick, who was so energetic and a fabulous spotter but also so patient with those less so. The program itself was very well thought out and managed with 90% comfortable (even luxurious) lodgings, and a minimum of time wasted on the bus.

A fun guide, great birds, very good acommadations and usually nice weather. You'll love it if you enjoy the outdoors and nature and birds.

Our trip "Birding the Hot Spots of Costa Rica" was the trip of a lifetime for us. It was well planned, the birding was outstanding and our guide was the best I have ever had the pleasure to bird with. The lodging and food were also excellent. We highly recommend the trip for novice or serious birders. We saw over 300 species and over 220 were new or "life-birds" for me. The rest of the flora and fauna were also very interesting.

With each event of this adventurous trip, we kept asking ourselves, "Can anything top this?" Sure enough, just around the bend, or later in the day, day after day, this trip provided wonderful experiences. And if you're lucky enough to get Roger Melendez as your guide, you are fortunate indeed! He's knowledgeable, compassionate, energetic and organized.

Birding the Hot Spots of Costa Rica really lived up to its name. It was a wonderful trip and very exciting. So 277 species in 11 days. Had a terrific guide, Gilbreth, who was so knowledgeable and a lot of fun to be with. Small group (12) so got to know everyone, two nights in each place and birding between sites! Just an amazing country to learn about. Truly a great birding trip!
