Moderate
These programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
Active
For people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately Challenging
For hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
Challenging
Get ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

The biking in this program was easier than I expected and the rides were some of the safest and most beautiful I have experienced anywhere in the world. Everyone involved in the program brings Southern Hospitality to a new level. The evening activities are very entertaining and you will come to appreciate the slower pace of this gorgeous Southern area. But it's the bicycle rides that will make you want to come back -as one visit is just not enough riding on the beautiful trails in this part of Virginia.

The 4H facility where we stayed took me back to a simpler, more genuine time. The campus is gorgeous. The Va Creeper Trail is all that I expected and more. I loved spending time outdoors and even enjoyed the two drizzly days. (You'll be fine if you bring the right clothes!) Every person involved in this program was key to making this an outstanding experience -- Kevin (friendly program coordinator), Henry (leader on the trail, keeping us safe), Joe (van driver, aka 'The Smiler' ), Louis (sweeper on the trail, making sure those at the back are okay), and the folks in the kitchen added so much personality, fun, and commitment to excellence. The attendees were delightful, and by the end of the program, we had bonded into a friendly group. The Va Creeper Trail should not be missed -- what a wonderful break from politics, cell phones, computers, and crowds. I also loved spending time in the woods in the fall while the leaves were changing. Gorgeous!

My husband and I recently were on this trip and had a wonderful time. When we arrived Kevin was there to greet us. Henry, our bike leader, Lewis, the sweeper, and Joe were all lots of fun. They made sure we were well equipped with good bikes and water and kept us safe. Henry was very accommodating to those who wanted more challenge. The first day they took us to the top of the mountain. The ride down the mountain was beautiful with stops to look over the hillsides covered with Fraser firs and streams to watch the trout. We also we're given a guided tour of historic and quaint Abingdon. Our guide, Carl, clearly loves sharing his knowledge of the history and architecture of the town. Another night we saw a show at the Barter Theater which we enjoyed. We recommend this trip.

This is a lovely biking experience mostly through forest; I think it is overgraded as "moderately challenging" however. The first day is 17 miles downhill. One day is 17 miles from Abingdon to Damascus, but the last third is a gradual, but constant, uphill. Tickets to the historic Barter Theater on the last night was a great ending. This was the first Road Scholar trip for myself and my my husband; we plan to do more.

Biking the Virginia Creeper Trail was challenging and fun!! The scenery was beautiful! Our program coordinator, Kevin was flexible with our program plans, and the bicycle fitters were very accommodating with the bikes. This is my fourth road scholar trip, and it was an enjoyable experience. Brenda from Raleigh, N.C. Number of programs attended: 4 Date attended: 09/16/12- 09/21/12

If you like biking along rail to trails, you do not want to miss the VA Creeper. BEAUTFUL! The 14 of us had a great time biking and laughing in the van during our drives back and forth from the 4-H Center to the trail heads. The Barter Theatre proved to be a must see experience.

This was an awesome adventure and trip. The riding was beautiful and euphoric. Everyone was extremely accommodating and I felt very catered to by Sam, Henry, Joe, Lewis and Tim. The scenery was breath taking. I would recommend this trip to everyone, it was awesome and oh so memorable.

The Creeper Trail is well packed cherished gravel and the bikes furnished fit the trail well. The ride through Shady Valley is on paved roads and mostly downhill. The ride is very pretty and enjoyable. The staff at the 4-H center are very helpful to make this an enjoyable week.

I really enjoyed Biking the Creeper Trail! We had a rather small group of 11 plus our leader Henry, sweeper Lewis, and Joe our van driver. I will always remember the good times in Abdingdon, Damascus, and Saltville.

"Ever since buying a bike, friends have asked if I've cycled the 'VA Creeper Trail,' a 34.3-mile rail-to-recreation trail starting in Abingdon, VA. Now I understand why. We cycled past waterfalls, pastures & gorges and over 47 incredible wooden bridges / trestles. At times, I felt totally alone on the trail (but really wasn't). It was heavenly . . . almost a zen-like experience."
