Road Scholar
Program #8577RJ
9 Days | 8 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
While all of our learning adventures offer extraordinary value, our "Best Value" programs were rated by our participants themselves who thought their dollar went particularly far.
Love to learn in a small-group setting? This collection of programs has at most 10-24 participants.
See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

The Taste of Costa Rica is a wonderful introduction to the country, highlighting much of the variety of ecozones, people, agriculture and beauty. The "instructors" are local people, deeply involved in their culture and country, a real plus. This is a fantastic bargain trip!

We had an AMAZING time celebrating our 25th anniversary by going on our 1st Road Scholar program to Costa Rica! Pedro, our guide, was extremely knowledgeable about the geographic area, plants, birds, animals, local history, and people. Pedro was so gracious, had a great sense of humor, and was exceptionally well organized. It was great to have activities and meals planned with such a great variety. Our driver Henry got us safely to our destinations and we definitely appreciated not having to drive on the bumpy roads! All the activities were great, but I especially enjoyed visiting an elementary school where school children performed some traditional dances and having dinner with a family in Monteverde

Wonderful experience. Beautiful country and warm, friendly people. Everything was so well planned. Our trip leader, Pedro Bosquez was so knowledgeable, thoughtful and kind. I would highly recommend this trip.

This was some Taste! Our small group of 9 enjoyed the best of CR from the lowlands to the cloud forest. Thanks to our knowledgeable, caring, and passionate guide Edwin, and our driver "D" we had an experience that was "Pura Vida!!" Other interesting trip companions made for lively and thoughtful conversations. This well-organized tour wet my appetite for the longer Road Scholar trip to CR. As always, Road Scholar delivered on meals, accommodations, and educational material. June is billed as the rainy season, however, we had many sunny days and the rain was mostly intermittent. I didn't even need to use mosquito repellent.

A Taste of Costa Rica was a most enjoyable trip with like-minded travelers who were all there for an introduction to a gentle beautiful diverse country. The introduction was so fascinating and favorable that the country appealingly demands a return visit to further explore other National Parks, mountains, beaches and rain forests...on another well organized Road Scholar program. As always Road Scholar exceeded my expectations in their choice of accommodations and meals and activities and my fellow travelers on this particular program exceeded my expectations of how cohesive and cooperative a group of 16 people between the ages of 26 and 87 can be.I really think our group leader, Pedro's, personality set the stage for an atmosphere of peace, camaraderie, compassion, acceptance and patience, the perfect learning environment.

What a great experience! Everything about the trip was perfect. Would have liked more time in some places, but this was billed as a "taste" of Costa Rica, not the whole meal! Our guide, Glorianna, & our driver, Chicho, were amazing, always making sure we were comfortable and enjoying their beautiful country. The temperature was quite comfortable in April. We had no problem with mosquitoes. For an account of my trip, go to www.mytripjournal.com/ourdream & scroll down & click on the dates you wish to read.

The program description should stress the level and extensiveness of the walking and hiking. It was more on each day than I expected. The timing of the field trips and return left very Little leisure time.

"A Taste of Costa Rica" was a beautiful way to see and learn about the country. It is relatively small with less than a-half million people and smaller than the state of West Virginia. It was amazing how such a small country can be so unique in so many ways, with a culture unto itself. So very different than all the countries that surround it. The people are well educated, hard working and friendly, the general character of the country seems unaffected by the 'Hugeness' of the world. The country seems very subject to change in the next 20-30 years and like many places, worth seeing now.

This is a great way to get to know Costa Rica in a brief visit. You get to experience the different topographies, learn a bit about the history of the country, and see lots of flora and fauna. Our guide knew a lot and shared his knowledge freely. The driver was excellent. The whole experience was fun and definitely worth the time and money.

The program was terrific. It provided good balance of activities, education, free time, and lots of fun. The leader was engaging, very service-oriented, and knowledgeable about a wide range of topics. It was my first Road Scholar program, and I'll definitely do more based on this experience.

I doubt you will find a better tour of Costa Rica than this one. It manages to visit many of the important aspects of the culture in eight days in an entertaining and fairly relaxed way. I am still enjoying my trip in retrospect.

We enjoyed most aspects of this trip; the guide was especially good and the pace of the trip was nice. The things we enjoyed were the white-water rafting, the river excursion looking for wildlife during which we saw caymans and birds, the coffee-plantation tour (the guide was so passionate and we saw a sloth, too), and the scenery. We weren't as thrilled with the amount of driving involved, especially the stretch on a very bad road going to Monteverde. The meals were heavy and similar and didn't agree with everyone. I thought it helped to have read the book about the rainforest that had been recommended before going - it described the interconnectedness of the ecology. The Costa Rican people were very pleasant - this could be the original 'no problem' culture.

We love our visit to Costa Rica and learned a lot about bio diversity and how each of us makes a difference in this world. We were impressed that Costa Rica hope to have a 0 carbon footprint by 2021!

This trip is one of the best I have attended. Well-planned and much variety. Although it was in the beginning of the rainy season, the weather was not a problem, also the price presented a very good value.
