EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

What history in Savannah GA! The program staff did a great job of laying out the timeline staring with General Oglethorpe founding the 13 colony of Georgia through the Civil Was (or as they liked to say, the war of northern aggression). The history lessons were intermingled with a cooking class that was great fun. We prepared the black eyed pea salad for guests two days after getting home. Lots of music as well, Johnny Mercer and music from the early colony. Plenty of Road Scholar special touches with the back door entry to Mrs. Wilkes boarding house and a tour of a restored private residence. This program definitely deserves it's 5 star rating.

This was our first Road Scholar trip and it was great! We enjoyed the pace and diversity of the program. The hotel was lovely and in the center of old Savannah. The meals were good and even the weather was nice. The cooking class was a lot of fun. Learning the history of Savannah while touring is wonderful. Most of all, the trip was an excellent value.

This was my first Road Scholar experience...it was fabulous. Paul Blatner, our tour leader, was fantastic...a walking and talking book with never-ending information and intriguing stories. The history, architecture, food, music and folklore of Savannah came alive with Paul's expertise, knowledge and experience. He was always enthusiastic and filled us with wonder. Our walking tours and varied speakers gave us all many hours of entertainment and enlightenment. Our cooking school experience with Chef Darrin was fabulous and delicious. Thank you Paul and the Road scholar staff for a wonderful week in beautiful, historic Savanna, GA. What a memorable gift for us all! Mary Ann Landon from Crystal Lake, IL and snowbird from Venice, FL.

Marshall from Waynesville, NC Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 04/21/13 - 04/26/13
Marshall and Gerri from North Carolina Do not miss this program. This was our first Road Scholar experience and were frankly skeptical that the value added by Road Scholar would justify the expense. But were we wrong. This program is first class from day one. Would we change some things, probably, but not enough to discourage anyone from this program. The Cooking School is, as some others have said, incredible. Paul is a gem.

Following the Siege of Charleston Road Scholar program we spent the weekend in Beaufort SC (loved it), then on to the Savannah Road Scholar tour. We recommend it highly but felt that the Architecture lecture should have been on the first day rather than the last. We also would have preferred to have the Kim Polote Trio in the evening. The accommodations at the hotel were very very nice but the food left much to be desired. The restaurants, other than the hotel, were delightful. The cooking class was tops on my list but then the Kim Polote Trio and the Gen Oglethorpe events were outstanding as well. All in all, we recommend the tour.

James from Springfield, VA Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 10/21/12 - 10/26/12
An outstanding program!!! This was our 5th -- and we rank it high in the standings. Savannah has a rich, vibrant history -- and the presenters at this program did it proud. EVERY presenter was superb. We learned and enjoyed so much during our session. Savannah is truly unique. We had excellent accomodations, were located in a delightful walking area in the historic district, experienced a wide range of activities, had excellent coordinators (Paul and Jacky), and experienced a variety of dining venues. Best of all, we were part of a delightful group from across the States.

Chris from Springfield, VA Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 10/21/12 - 10/26/12
This was our 5th or 6th Road Scholar trip. Every one has been a uniquely different and pleasurable learning experience. I must say, however, that this Savannah experience was our best one yet. The speakers were incredible, especially the hands-on cooking demo, and the Oglethorpe lecture. Fantastic !!

Robert from Annandale, VA Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 10/21/12 - 10/26/12
This was our fifth Road Scholar program. All have been a lot of fun & educational, but this was the best yet! The instructors were uniformly outstanding and entertaining. We learned a lot about Savannah and its history and - most important - had a great time!

Laurie from Costa Mesa, CA Number of programs attended: 11
Date attended: 10/21/12 - 10/26/12
This trip jumped to one of my top three favorites (11 trips with Road Scholar). It offered much variety in terms of exploring and classroom time -- history, foods and cooking, architecture, music, museums, and lifestyle of Old Savannah. Just the right amount of free time. Central location of hotel was perfect -- walking distance to everything. Programs were fascinating and well-presented by knowledgeable historians.

Good program. Enjoyed Savannah more than I expected to. Particularly enjoyed learning what an important part this area played in the American Revolutionary War. I had no Idea that most of that war was fought in the area South of Virginia.
Meals were very good, and weather perfect the whole time.

Jim from Hazleton, PA Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 03/25/12 - 03/30/12
My wife Anne and I attended with Pauline and her husband Ron a raft of totally wonderful folks. We shared some completely spontaneous and memorable moments which will make me smile for years. The subtitle of this course could have been "eating your way through Historic Savannah". If all you know about Savannah is what you see on the cable food networks, "y'all ain,t seen nothin yet!" The restaurants in which we dined were wonderful! The cooking lesson was informative, lighthearted, even "life-changing." The group leader Paul Blatner is a true Southern gentleman who uses all of his inside contacts to make the week enjoyable.

Pauline from Rio Vista, CA Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 03/25/12 - 03/30/12
What a wonderful program. Paul, our leader, was as good as they get AND more. The narrators, showman, cooking class, field trips. restaurants, hotel and meals could not have been better. A very enjoyable week.

Sandra from Sewickley, PA Number of programs attended: 12
Date attended: 04/01/12 - 04/06/12
A wonderful experience. Savannah is beautiful and very visitor friendly. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone interested in our southern colonial past. I learned so much!

Rosemary from East Lansing, MI Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 02/26/12 - 03/02/12
I thoroughly agree with everything Nancy from MN said. Our tour leader really packed in a lot of information, and I wish the program had been longer. I appreciated having a first-rate historian as a program leader; his knowledge gave so much depth to the learning experience. The food was great, the hotel comfortable, and everything combined to create a congenial atmosphere.

Leslie from Huntsville, UT Number of programs attended: 6
Date attended: 02/19/12 - 02/24/12
Yes, I agree. This program was delightful. Lots of variety with the cooking class being one of the highlights for me. The Johnny Mercer music presentation was delightful. All the presenters shared a lot of info in their field of knowledge. Everything was perfect, including the weather. Not too hot, not too cold.

Bill from Arcadia, MI Number of programs attended: 6
Date attended: 02/19/12 - 02/24/12
This program's variety and leader made it a pleasure to attend. Highlights were cooking class, Johnny Mercer music, and house museum tours. We recommend it.

Nancy from Woodbury, MN Number of programs attended: 9
Date attended: 10/23/11 - 10/28/11
This Road Scholar about the history and music of Savannah was outstanding!! The program leader was extremely knowledgable about many different aspects of the history of Savannah. The different presenters were all excellent, but "General Oglethorpe" was the top. He had so much information, and he presented it in such a unique way that made learning fun. How I wish history teachers in our schools would use methods like this when possible. Our cooking experience with Chef Darin was fun, but it was also definitely a learning experience...and I don't even enjoy cooking! All the field trips were great: learning about the different styles of architecture; learning about the people who used to live in some of the homes; learning where the builders got their materials; fires and rebuilding; it was all very interesting. Our hotel was very nice, a great location, and the breakfasts were very good. I highly recommend this Road Scholar.
