See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

We loved this trip! We have been keeping a blog that tells all about it in detail, complete with photos. Anyone can read it here: http://www.mytripjournal.com/Lois_and_John_SoutheastAsia The actual Road Scholar trip begins on Day 4.

This was no run of the mill trip to Asia. Learning about the culture and history of Vietnam and Cambodia was a lesson in perspective. Every detail and activity was well planned and executed to help us understand how and why people live as they do. We learned first-hand how war and government affects people's lives. Every activity, every guide, every place was memorable. It will be easy to tell your friends why you decided to go to Vietnam and Cambodia!

This is a popular tour so I think Road Scholar and the local program providers have been able to approach perfection with the schedule, activities and choice of guides. It is difficult to imagine how the program could be improved. I strongly recommend anyone contemplating doing the program to do it. You will not be disappointed!

The Mekong River Cruise was our first Road Scholar trip and certainly not the last. It daily exceeded our expectations and guide/group leader Thuyen was an important part of making it memorable. He, as well as regional guides, were so helpful and knowledgeable. The river boat was comfortable and food always a taste treat.

Always love Road Scholar programs and this program to Vietnam and Cambodia was exceptional. The tour guides brought the culture, history, people and beauty to life. The Barge trip was very comfortable, peaceful with beautiful views. Will continue to travel Road Scholar.

Amazing trip! We enjoyed the small group experience, the fantastic tour guides, and great food. It was truly a life-changing experience! Thank you Road Scholar.

Fabulous trip! it was a small group and a small river boat which was only for our group so it was like a private club. Great traveling companions, terrific food, wonderful staff and the guides were outstanding. You could not ask for more even if you were at the most high end resort in the world.

Outstanding tour! I will definitely book a Rhodes Scholar tour again. The tour guides, itinerary, accommodations, food and customer service were of the highest caliper.

I loved the variety of experiences on this trip that included such diverse activities as seeing burgeoning cities and rural villages, visiting a university, sitting with kids in rural schools, riding in cool busses, bumpy tuk-tuks, and a farmer's ox cart! Being part of life along the river was beautiful and educational. Our warm and friendly guide, Thuy Duong Pham, was knowledgeable, organized, and kept everything running well--a study in excellence. I will take more trips if guides approach Duong's caliber.

The Program Angor Wat - Vietnam and Cambodia was really wonderful. It was a small group (18), a very nice crew on the boat and we went up the Mekong and I think that I would prefer that to starting at Siem Reap.

Ottley from Houston, TX Number of programs attended: 2

I have spent a lifetime dreaming of visiting Angkor Wat. This program gave me that opportunity and it was a dream-come-true. The balance of Angkor Wat and a trip down the Mekong Delta was a perfect pairing. The hotels and meals and our tour leader were all awesome.

Allan from Claremont, CA Number of programs attended: 2

Very well constructed program. The riverboat provided a good balance of opportunities to relax and onshore activities. Definitely recommended. Although we usually travel independently, the efficiencies that this tour afforded made us glad to have been with the group.

Fascinating trip that fosters understanding and affection of the culture and history of Cambodia and Vietnam. The trip would not work for the queezy, timid or fastidious but Road Scholar makes it safe and satisfying.

I can't add more to what others have said -- this is a wonderful trip, as being on the river is the best way to see how the local people live and work. Our guide was absolutely the best we have had, out of many great ones, so if you are lucky enough to have Pham Thuy Duong as your guide, you're in for a special adventure. She is super.

Alice from Fork Union, VA Number of programs attended: 18

I totally agree with the review posted by Kate and Bruce from New Hampshire! We had a wonderful trip -- being on the Mekong and in the villages gives perspectives on Vietnam and Cambodia that I cannot imagine getting any other way. And our most special guide -- Pham Thuy Duong -- was a total delight throughout our whole journey.

After four trips with Road Scholar we feel confident that the program will be quite full enough as described in the brochure, but that it will also be flexible so that the participants can request or tailor the schedule specifically for that day and even change the event if the leader knows where you are going.

Before the trip itself,my focus was on the Khmer temples where I'd wanted to visit for many years. However, what a wonderful surprise EVERY aspect of the trip was! Saigon was lovely with its huge French buildings. The boat experience was fantastic as we immersed ourselves in river life of fishing and agriculture with visits to various micro businesses. The Toum Tiou boat was exquisite with haute cuisine, gorgeous views from the deck, comfortable state rooms and an accommodating staff. Phnom Penh with its National Palace complex bedazzled me as did the surrounding gardens. The Ankhor temples were as magical, mystical and dramatic as I had anticipated. I would definitely recommend the Khmer temple extension trip. The heat, humidity, and pollution were extreme but in the large picture not a deterrence to this trip of a lifetime, unforgettable in every way.

Very well organized form initial inquiry to the end. Flights, ground transportation, guides, boat, hotels and meals were all excellent. Couldn't ask for more from a tour to this part of the world. Small group size a major plus. Felt more like a family excursion rather that a large heard following a guide holding a flag. This trip was educational, enlightening, intense, fascinating, soul searching and fun all rolled into one. Road Scholar did an all round excellent tour.

If you like river life, and enjoy seeing other ways people live their lives, this tour is an excellent choice. The small, intimate cruise ship was the perfect home for a week on the Mekong.

LIFE ON THE MEKONG BY BARGE WAS DELIGHTFUL. IT INCLUDED A WIDE VARIETY OF INTERESTING EXPERIENCES COVERING MANY FACETS OF THE HISTORIES AND CULTURES OF THE AREA. ALL THE STAFF WERE MOST HELPFUL AND HOSPITABLE.

This is a trip never to be forgotten. From the experiences of motor scooter laddened Saigon, the tiny shops and night market and Killing Fields and S-21 of Phnom Phen, to the amazing treasures of Ankor Wat, to the many and varied pagodas ... it is one new vision quickly followed by another. And then there is the great Mekong River with its various tributories. The shores that constantly change in the visions presented. The many types of water houses and water markets, the children, the women dressed in the beautiful clothes of the area. Muddy streets. Poor conditions. Friendly people. A cornocopia of mental snapshots, supported by interesting field trips and lectures. And, of course, a lovely river boat. For anyone in their late '60s or older, being in good physical shape and having a good store of energy is a must. Please feel free to inquire about anything.

What a great trip this was. Everything was wonderful even when it down poured for 5 minutes most days. Toum Teav could have only been better had it told us they didn't take credit cards for on board purchases. the food was excellent and the staff, what can I say...they were the best.

We spent a delightful week spent on the fascinating Mekong River with interesting people on a charming boat with a marvelous crew, and delicious food every day. We didn't get sick, we had no rain, and we never saw a mosquito. How can you beat that?

The captain and staff of the Toum Teav made this trip magic!

This trip was a great, relaxing experience except for the visa difficulties I had in re-entering Viet Nam from Cambodia.
