I found it entertaining but not as robust as had hoped. I had taken a tour 10 years ago and they used a zodiac so we could get much closer to the whales. I also found the food sub par and when requested something healthier for breakfast I was told to go out and buy it myself.
Road Scholar's response:
Thank you for your feedback. We have made changes to this program in response to participant suggestions, and are pleased to report that our 2014 dates will be relocated to an oceanfront property at Kaaanapali Beach. The lodging offers ocean-view rooms, an improved food service, and is in a location where whales can often be found breaching offshore.

Overall, I was very pleased with the trip. They term the ocean around Maui "Whale Soup" because of the numerous humpbacks. I was also delighted that at my age I was still able to snorkel. They made it easy to do by helping you in and out of the water and even providing masks that are tailored for those of us who are nearsighted. My only qualm was that our group was large with 40 some folks and we went on boats to whale watch that had over a hundred on board. So it was difficult to juggle for a good viewing position. I would have preferred to go out on a smaller vessel. Also, the hotel is located on a pretty harbor area but at an extremely busy intersection whereby it's scary to try and cross to get to the mall across the street.
The food was great with unlimited buffet dining at most meals.
I also enjoyed the expertise and caring of our illustrious trip leader, Claire Durham.
A friend told me before I left that the whales try to "show out" when they know they're being observed. I honestly believe this as one was turning and flapping joyfully and besides the breach I saw that was one of my main highlights. Yes, this is an experience of a lifetime and I'd like to do it again.

Really worthwhile. You will see "a lot of whales" and the young Marine Biologists will share excellent knowledge of these gentle giants with you
