Reviews, photos and videos for program: Fall Birding on Virginia's Eastern Shore

Mary from Alexandria, VA I agree that the weather and the government shutdown cast a pall on our trip, but I would like to add that several of the presenters were really wonderful. Susan Powell had great photographs (two dissimilar-looking indigo buntings, American goldfinches!) and was wonderfully patient in getting the owl response during our evening trip. Prof. Ruth Beck from William and Mary was very informative and inspiring. Joe Beatty filled in the social aspect of the eastern shore when the weather didn't cooperate; I loved the catbirds and mockingbirds in the Eyre House garden. (This is only a partial list of folks involved.) I'm a novice birder, but I got a lot out of this trip.

It is hard to say what our program would have been like if the government and weather had cooperated. However, two disappointments remain for me. The accommodations were dreadful. Also the advertisement talked of bird banding and butterfly marking. We never saw the butterfly lady so we didn't see her methods or hear about her studies. We saw the mist nets and banding station, but the personnel did not stop to talk with us about their research. The raptor station also did not show us banding or raptors in hand. I would hope a better description of programs would be available. We were also surprised that the team didn't have back-up plans in place. When the weather turned on us, everyone stood around and made suggestions.Leadership was not prepared Sharon and Doug Dwyer

I must say the forces were against us on this program -- the rain was relentless and the government shutdown put an additional damper on our field trips. In spite of it, however, the group dynamic was most enjoyable with many interesting and friendly participants to visit with while waiting out the storms. Accomodations were dreadful, dreary and depressing to say the least; but somehow the food and the food service was quite good. As novice birders we did learn quite a bit although the birds seemed to be smarter than we were and all stayed indoors!! Will probably try another birding program in the Spring....any suggestions?

The program was well planned and would have been great, if we had not been rained out and the national properties had not been closed by the government shut-down. The presenters and naturalists accompanying us on the field trips were quite good. The lodging at Sunset Beach was unacceptable. Although the beds were new and the linens were clean, the facility is extremely run-down and depressing. As always with RS, our companions were fun and interesting to be with. We may try this program again if the lodging is changed. The weather is always a risk; birding would have been excellent a week earlier.
