Reviews, photos and videos for program: Opera Extravaganza: The Santa Fe Opera Festival Season

This Opera Extravaganza with Road Scholar in Santa Fe is the perfect way to spend a week: you are surrounded by smart people who love opera and who have travelled everywhere to see it and who enjoy talking about it over breakfast, lunch, and dinner. But the group, in my case led by the fabulous facilitator Kay Barber, also loves to talk about nearly everything, and we all tended to care for each other like family members. The week doesn't really count as a week away from home; instead the week feels like another true home, this time also filled with good friends, good conversation, and good music. I'll be back for my fourth session in 2016. Curt Crotty of Evanston, Illinois

Bravi! I'd like to second all those kudos aimed at the Road Scholar opera program, its coordinators, the productions themselves, the convenience and amenities of the hotel, the lecturer who whipped us up to keen anticipation of the five operas. I also very much enjoyed the program participants, who were willing to talk about opera morning, noon and night. Thanks to all of you.

This is my third straight five day opera program and I plan to continue as long as I'm physically able to attend. Next year for sure

I loved the program. Five operas in five days with interesting and informative discussion and instruction was wonderful. I not only fulfilled a lifelong dream, but I intend to come back next year.

For anyone immersed in opera, or mildly interested and hoping to learn more, the Santa Fe Opera experience is superb. The lectures and following morning "wrap-up" leave one well-informed and eager to see and hear more. Combining the musical learning and enjoyment of the performances with the stunning geographical surroundings make for an exceptional and rewarding week.

We had some of the best seats in the house each night at the opera and we had the very best lecturer on the opera I have ever heard.

We attended the Santa Fe opera week for the third time and were not disappointed. The quality of the lectures by Oliver Presant is unequaled and he is the main reason for the repeat. Of course the operas are important as well and we find it exciting to see/hear a new creation every year. I am sure many people wrote about the Lodge at SF and the poor quality of the meals. It is clear that this hotel needs help, but I enjoyed the pool and really was not bothered by any discomforts. We recommend this program and find it good value for money. It was our 5th time with Road Scholar. We were there the week of August 2-8. Mieke, from Hilton Head, SC

The Santa Fe Opera Extravaganza is a wonderful experience. The operas are usually a good cross section of the opera repetoire and the instructors very knowledgable and interesting. The town itself provides many unique and exciting learning and entertainment opportunities.

Oliver Prezant is definitely the best presenter of opera related material I ever encountered. I really enjoyed the lectures and learned a great deal. The Santa Fe Hilton was a good choice of hotel, because of its location within walking distance of the center of town. As always, with Road Scholar, there were many interesting participants.

August 2014. If you enjoy opera performed and sung and staged in the most ideal of settings, and if you enjoy being with other people around your age who love to see and to talk about the same things, and if you enjoy morning opera lectures and casual discussions with one of the smartest and most entertaining teachers you'll ever have (Oliver Prezant), and if you just want to fall back and relax into a nice hotel for a week and be served good meals (in this case at The Lodge at Santa Fe) and have your days organized in the most efficient and comfortable manner (in this case by Kay Barber, the Group Leader), and if you love being taken to museums in the afternoons and to an opera every night--if you like everything on that long list, you simply can't find a better way to spend a week than in Santa Fe in August with Road Scholar and its "Opera Extravaganza: The Santa Fe Opera Festival Season." This was my second trip to this program and my third will occur, for sure, next August. Curt, from Illinois

We enrolled in this program for the second time and were not disappointed.Oliver Prezant's lectures every morning are a treat and they gave us access to each of the operas in a very special way. Each opera became a culturally enriching experience. We were very pleased with the change in accommodations. The Lodge at Santa Fe is quite welcoming and comfortable, with a nice pool. Meals were well prepared and varied. Our group leader, Kay Barber did everything she possibly could to make our stay pleasant and successful Even bought the New York Times in the morning and put it on the breakfast table. The participants were just that: a highly knowledgeable group of individuals who kept the discussion at a high level with lots of energy. Certainly a program to recommend.Hendrik and Mieke Smit

Santa Fe opera for 5 nights with morning lectures by Oliver Prezant is THE thing to do for opera lovers of every level.

The opera "Dr. Sun Yat Sen" far exceeded my expectations. All aspects of the perfect opera were met at the highest level. It seems the audience withheld applause until the end, not wanting to distract from the pathos of the story. It was then they burst into a thunderous reaction with many "bravos" to punctuate the appreciation of an excellent production.
