How would you like to go aboard the Charles W. Morgan, the only surviving wooden whaling ship in America? Spend three nights on the Mystic Whaler, the replica of a 19th century cargo schooner? Tail on to a halyard and help set sail as a renowned chanteyman provides the rhythm for your work with his song? You can do all this and much more at this Road Scholar program, but don't sign up for it if you're the type of person who expects luxury. However, if you have an adventurous spirit, pack a small bag and get ready for a very special experience. Captain John and his crew will make you feel welcome, galley mate Pat will pamper you with all her wonderful meals, and Chanteyman Geoff will entertain you royally. You will walk the lovely streets of Stonington, home to Connecticut's last commercial fishing fleet, visit lighthouses such as the unique one on Block Island with its rare first order Fresnel lens, join in singing choruses of lots of sea chanteys, and enjoy the camaraderie of your fellow passengers as you sail. My husband, Gerry, and I have each been to over 220 Elderhostels, and we rate this one as A+.
