As RS Ambassador, I tell my audiences that if one has an unsatisfactory experience on a RS program, try a different RS provider. And now I can add my own experience of a RS program I would not repeat! After signing up for a barge trip through Burgundy with another company, I searched for a RS program that would give me a second week in France. This Rhone trip jibed perfectly and continued my theme visiting the wine regions of France. I realized my mistake assuming a "Bike & Barge" trip would afford me the option of biking or barging when the final information packet arrived stating anyone incapable of biking would be removed from the program and SENT HOME! By that time I was in for a few thousand dollars and my schedule gave me no time to train. So in some ways I hoped that Hans, the Dutch retired military leader, would flunk me on my bike test. What he must have thought when I showed up, overweight, under trained, helmet old and decrepit, bike shorts new and never worn! But he was tolerant, corrected my dismount, then passed me on the test. So I made a valiant effort the first day of biking but by the end, after finding myself riding the shoulder of a four-lane highway in 90 kpm traffic, crossing a double bridge on a narrow pedestrian-filled sidewalk, and climbing a hill unnecessarily when the "corner system" failed and we missed the turn back down to the barge, I knew I would go AWOL and suffer the consequences. I did complete about half of the biking program, ignoring the mental drubbing of being the weakest and the non-conformist. I regret slowing down the group and I apologize to the leader for causing him extra concern in his already very heavy responsibility. He can blackball me from future IBT programs. And I post this review with the aim to forewarn others who are not dedicated to spending all one's touring hours on a bike. My fellow participants were delighted with the tour as they had that dedication. I hope they post their positive experiences!
