Reviews, photos and videos for program: Kayak or Canoe Building and Coastal Ecology on the Chesapeake Bay

The kayaks that we completed are unique, beautiful, and were enjoyable to build. We definitely had a sense of achievement as each phase of construction was completed. Our instructor, Jeff, was very knowledgeable and was able to communicate his love of craftsmanship and kayaks to us during the entire week. The Chincoteague field station staff, led by Parker, were helpful, flexible, and fun. The accommodations, while dormitory in nature, were more than adequate. Meals at the field station were homemade and filling. The kayaking field trips were well thought out, interesting and enjoyable. These trips included a variety of ecosystems found in the area. The staff was well-informed, accommodating, and willing to field all participant comments and questions. The whole experience was practiced and professional.

What a spectacular week. The facilities at the Marine Science Consortium were very nice and the people there were friendly and helpful. They feed us very well. Most of the meals were in the cafeteria, but there were at least three were cook outs just for our group (6 people making 5 kayaks) and we were treated to meals at fancy seafood restaurants twice. Leigh, our kayaking building instructor was very good, and did a fine job teaching. He struck a good balance between helping and letting you do it yourself when you wanted to. The kayaks we built are Skin On Frame style. They're incredibly light for the size, and handle very nicely. So we didn't have to sit around and watch paint dry MSC took us on paddles in their tandem kayaks and a field trip to a seldom visited beach. There are lots of pictures posted at http://DavidReedSmith.shutterfly.com

I echo Carole's thoughts -- I found the 'build' part of the program challenging, yet in the end very satisfying to come home with a beautiful kayak. I attended the program as a single female and was able to complete most of the tasks myself. Occasionally I called upon Nick or Alex (MSC employees)if I needed a little more 'manpower'. Our instructor, Leigh, was always available to help out as well. In short, I never felt 'alone' in accomplishing what needed to be done.

Kayak Building is exhausting and exhilarating. The actual building of the kayak was very challenging but personally satisfying. The kayak paddling was out of this world. On the last day you paddle your own kayak. What more can you ask?
