We did this trip first and then trip to Havana and Cienfuegos. The Oriente provided the perfect orientation to Cuba, but life there is very different from life closer to Havana. Great people, food, art, and music.

Oriente is a marvelous trip. Go. The tour is fast paced and filled with cultural, artistic, economic, political and social experiences that will broader your mind and tug at your heart. The Cubans welcomed us completely. Their country is filled with interesting architecture, good food, lovely people and enormous challenges. It was a privilege to experience this fascinating place. Our tour guide, Louis-Gabriel, is unmatched. His warmth, kindness, and humor draw not only the RS participants, but all the Cuban people he encounters to him. Ismar, the Cuban guide, was super He provided a wealth of information delivered with a genuineness not often seen. Save Havana for another day. Experience Oriente!

The Cuba Oriente program is wonderful, educational, and entertaining in every way. You will see many different facets of Cuban life and meet and talk with painters, potters, musicians, dancers, cowboys, farmers, fishermen, and teachers and learn about their lives. You will learn about Cuba's history and government as you see monuments and sites of significant battles. I loved that we were able to engage with the people and talk to schoolchildren in their classrooms, dance with the dancers (and learn the salsa!), walk around on our own, visit artists in their studios and purchase their beautiful and most affordable art, talk to musicians (it’s amazing what they accomplish despite their struggle to get such basic supplies as guitar and violin strings), visit a farm and a market, and in general feel the warmth and friendliness of the Cuban people.

The Feb. 15-Feb. 22 trip to Oriente was fabulous and exceeded all expectations in providing a People-to People experience. Thanks to a superb team led by our Road Scholar guide and local guide who were very caring for those on the team with handicaps and provided a great background of the area, we were able to meet a variety of artists, see their possibilities and handicaps, and actually experience the warmth of the Cuban people in general. Americans were universally welcome and you can’t get more People-to-People than having your grand-daughters become pen pals with a charming Cuban teenager. Cuba is changing as I have been told by those who have been there before and you can see it in the opportunities for Cubans to start restaurants and other businesses as well as buy and sell homes, etc. But while we saw in detail how Cuba finds talented artists, athletes doctors, etc. starting at age 4 (and from every part of society, not just the wealthy) they have little access to what we consider normal amenities, such as soap. We attended a wonderful chamber music concert in an art center in Camaguey and the conductor told us that his biggest challenges were replacing strings and getting access to musical scores. Some of us on the trip plan to try to address these challenges. They are a great people.

I just returned from a Road Scholar trip in Eastern Cuba, which included visits to artists' studios, music concerts, an elementary school, churches, a cemetery, and public squares. The experience was exciting and informative.

The Oriente program is wonderful on its own, but I found it to be an exceptional supplement to the Cuba Today program! I highly recommend this program. These are exciting times of change in Cuba. what a gift to be able to witness history in the making

I loved it, and want to go back to Oriente provinces more than any other Latin American country I have visited. This trip fulfilled a 37 year old dream. Further, it engendered a love for Cuba and its people. I deem it a service to all participants in the program.

This is the best trip to Cuba offered. We plan to take our grandson to Cuba in the next two years. However,I understand Road Scholar will no longer offer this trip; therefore we will have to take our next trip to Cuba with someone other than Road Scholar. We have previously traveled to Cuba with Road Scholar, but I did not think that trip was as good as this one. What has set Road Scholar apart from others offering trips to Cuba was this trip, which others do not offer. If you want to be an average travel service, then you made a smart decision by not offering this trip again.
