The program went beyond the cliches about San Francisco, and provided a depth of knowledge about the 1906 earthquake and fire, the building of the Golden Gate Bridge, and the Chinese role and the political aspects of the building of the transcontinental railway. Scenic aspects that we saw were related to these events. It was all terrifically interesting.

This was a great program and I learned a lot about things I thought I knew. However, San Francisco is a hilly city and there was alot of walking involved which I found challenging (I'm 85).

My wife and I have been on over 20 Elderhostel trips around the world, and in fact, met on one 18 years ago. In China we were given orange colored hats noteing place and program. Might think about having hats, shirts, etc. for participants either included in the price or as an add-on that can be purchased. Something can use after program and serves as great advertisement. All programs with great content and instructors, and guides. (We only will charge $1,000 a lecture to promote Elderhostel/Road Scholar--with expenses, obviously)

a nice intro to a wonderful city: be sure you ride a cable car and eat lunch at the Palace Hotel (two experiences you have time for but are not included): trip to Alcatraz with the essential audio tour was surprisingly good

The program activity and tours using public transportation is great. Anyone contemplating this program should keep in mind that walking two to three miles a day in San Francisco involves walking up and down steep hills. All of our group, including a 92 year old man, handled it well and it was no problem. It might be a problem for someone who is not in good condition.

This is a fabulous program. We truly learned all about San Francisco. I wish all visitors to this city could be this well informed.
