Reviews, photos and videos for program: Pennsylvania Railroads: History and Heritage

The Pennsylvania Railroads: History & Heritage provided an excellent historical, economic and social overview of the impact railroads had in one state and nationwide.

This program was somewhat disappointing. Apparently RoadScholar outsourced to Sugar Tours and it shows- this program was essentially a bus tour to a series of tourist venues, some of which left me wondering why we were there, especially given that very little educational value was added over the normal and expected museum docents and Park Rangers-- RoadScholar is diluting their brand. If you want to learn about railroads and related cultural history, look elsewhere or simply visit Steamtown National Historic Site.

My husband and I enjoyed exploring the railroads in Pennsylvania very much. We had both an excellent tour guide, Sharon Fohle, and bus driver, Monty Wells. Our group became friendly very quickly. Here's a Phoebe Snow poem for all of them: Phoebe Snow In great delight Stood gazing At the starry night "I wish I may, I wish I might, Ride the Road of Anthracite."

Had a wonderful time but unfortunately the weather was mostly not on our side. The trees were beautiful especially when the sun peeked out. I learned a lot about the history of the railroad and saw some beautiful scenery riding amtrack through the horseshoe curve. Our driver and co-ordinater couldn't have been nicer or more well informed. Good program!!
