Reviews, photos and videos for program: Lake Erie: Birding the Islands and Shores

Birding the Lake Erie Islands was a wonderful opportunity to visit a new area. Leaders were excellent as were at B & Bs. I had close up views of the birds, including 2 life birds. South Bass Island was delightful and McGee Marsh was outstanding. There were many people on the boardwalk, but all were polite and shared their scope views. Nancy Olsen, Plattsburgh, NY

Anne from Centreville, VA Number of Programs attended: 3 Date: 05/05/05/10/13 The program was well-planned and delivered on all its promises. The guides are leaders in their fields especially Tom Bartlett and Dr. Andy Jones. Our B and B was comfortable and within walking distance of the Crew's Nest (for meals) and for evening lectures (The Town Hall). If you enjoy birding, natural history and US/Canadian history, this program is for you.

This was our third program (Costa Rica, San Juan Islands, Lake Erie). All have been well organized, with excellent leaders, food, and programs. This was the first one to use the ear phone receiver so everyone could hear what the leader was saying. It was very helpful for me since for photography opportunities, I often like to get a little distance away from a large group. I see more birds close to the group, but I often get closer to the birds when I'm farther from the group. I was able to hear the transmissions up to about 200 feet most of the time.

Everything about this program was first-rate: The food, the lodging, the weather, and of course, the people involved in all the aspects of the planning, leading, and teaching. This was our first Road Scholar program, and we were very impressed!!

This trip was very well-organized. The instructors were extremely knowledgeable yet down-to-earth and willing to answer all our questions. Even though migration slowed somewhat while we were there we still did a lot of good birding. The bird banding sessions were a highlight for me. Also this trip had the best food we've experienced on a Road Scholar trip. From the team leaders to the restaurant servers, all of the people were friendly and welcoming.

My first Road Scholar trip and now I can understand why people keep coming back time after time. Our leaders were caring, very knowledgable, and lots of fun!

Well organized program, leaders experienced in identifying birds, field trip leaders used microphones and each participant had a receiving device and earpiece with a volume adjustment so you didn't have to be right beside the leader to know what birds were being seen and where the bird was located. Magee Marsh was the most productive birding area. When the schedule was reviewed for the next day we were always told we had the option to skip any activity we weren't interested in, that it was our vacation and we could do something else if we wanted. We enjoyed all the activities, even those that weren't birding related. Our bed and breakfast accommodation was excellent. The lunch and evening meals at The Crew's Nest were delicious. This was our first Road Scholar program, Lew and I highly recommend it and are looking forward to our next trip.

A wonderful adventure. Bruce and I loved the ferry excursions, the lovely bed and breakfast accommodations, the experience of being on an island for five days, the collegial group of bird watchers and most of all the bird watching. Our guides were expert at spotting and identifying the birds, with special emphasis on the warblers. Another remarkable Road Scholar program that we highly recommend.

Guides were very helpful in viewing birds...I saw 53 Life Birds which was great. Box lunches were soggy sandwiches, fruit and chips...most of the rest of the meals were good. Winery, cave and museum was not very interesting would have enjoyed more time viewing birds at Magee Marsh or other Wildlife Refuge.

Much more than bird watching! Learn how to identify warblers, learn about banding and migration patterns. I now feel more confident going out into the local woods in my area to find warblers. I highly recommend this adventure!

Ohio's McGee Marsh, the Lake Erie islands, and Pelee Point in Canada are world-class sites for birding — I had a fun experience learning to see and identify colorful birds of all sizes from warblers to eagles.
