Fit or not the support staff will do all they can to make this biking adventure chock full of information, memories, good conversation, beautiful vistas, and good ol' Black Hills cookin'. If your not into biking up hill on packed gravel, climb in the sag wagon and enjoy biking down hill.

I participated in a cycling trip through the Black Hills. It was a lot of fun.

We had a great time doing this program. It is our second Road Scholar bicycle trip, I would recommend either to anyone! The Black Hills of SD is a place we will visit again!

What a wonderful trip! Outlaw Ranch is a great place to stay, with excellent food and very nice staff. The Mickelson Trail is beautiful, and the way they broke up the days made for great cycling, with more downhill than up. And the Black Hills area has such much else to see and do that we could have used at least another day there.

Mary, the facilitator ensured we were always happy re: safety, comfort, food, accommodations & everything else too. She was not only flexible, but helped me & another 2 participants diverge from the program schedule to accommodate our request to visit somewhere not included in the program. The other staff was great too, also very concerned about our continual happiness. Leaders Gary and Roger were my saviours--slowing down and cycling with me, without complaining--just always kind & helpful. Sometimes the cycling was much harder than I'd expected. I am not used to elevations of 3500 feet--I live at basically sea level, and couple that with cycling on what was sometimes loose gravel and/or sand, into the blazing sun in sometimes 90 degree weather with no shade for miles, and sometimes uphill for long stretches, I have to say that there were times where I said to myself, "I chose to do this....why?" But, then I'd round a corner and see blazing blue sky, the sound of a creek flowing and birds singing, see tall yellow grasses caressing a light breeze, and suddenly it all seemed worthwhile. All the other staff were great too--Donna & Marlys kept me well fed even with my very weird diet needs--Marlys even surprised me with little treats she purchased just for me. I felt so special! Sam, Nate and everyone else--such wonderful, interesting, kind & caring people--the best! The ranch is so serene and quiet--a lovely location where the stars seem so close you feel you could touch them. The cycling was hard sometimes, but it felt great to accomplish cycling the whole trail. During this program we had a speaker teach us about fighting forest fires & gave us valuable info regarding what we need to know to be careful about while in the woods. The only problem I can report with regards to this tour I just took is that the leaders have set the bar so high, I worry that no future RS program I want to take can match it!Sandy Hall--Vancouver, BC, Canada

Don't be misled and think there will be easy biking because the route is a rail-to-trail conversion. I've biked rail trails in 6 states, and because of the incline, this biking is much more challenging than any others. These are not sprints. The most challenging is 12 miles of sustained uphill. There are supported breaks, carefully planned, and they were most welcome. And afterwards - delicious meals with great homebaked breads and homemade jams!
