Reviews, photos and videos for program: Chincoteague Service Learning: From Carpentry to Collecting Stories

No question - this service project in Chincoteague involved hard work. But - and I'm 76 - I'd go back in a heartbeat! Helping to maintain the ponies' habitat was rewarding and memorable. The Refuge Inn was a perfect fit for the program with biking and kayaking rental places nearby for free time. And, I'll leave you with two words - Island Creamery - which, according to TripAdvisor, has the best ice cream in the country.

Returned last week from my first service trip with Road Scholar. Chincoteague/Assateague were perfect. I worked outdoors for two days and in the museum for two days. At 72, the pace was very appropriate for me. The leaders, Bill Spann, Billie Dayton, and Cindy Oehm are outstanding - a nice mixture of local and "comehere"; each incredibly knowledgable. I would do this again, as many participants were there for their 4-10th year; however, I want to go to for some other service trips. Chincoteague and the park on Assateague are well worth a trip.

The service program in Chincoteague is ideal for anyone who enjoys combining learning with the opportunity to volunteer in the Wildlife Reserve. The setting is beautiful, with frequent sightings of egrets and herons, and the food in the local restaurants selected by the organizers is superb. Local history and culture are fascinating, and the five days fly past too fast!

Highly recommend. Opportunities for strenuous or sedentary tasks (demolition of stairs, decking; excavation of oyster nets buried in sand) to archival work @ museum or painting of bookshelves. Every step of the way, supportive, flexible folks who foster atmosphere of commaraderie & can-do attitude. Spectacular scenery out in the refuge. Came away from this feeling relaxed & enthusiastic; enriched & accomplished. Kudos to: Billie, Ennis, staff @ refuge.

If you like carpentry projects, or enjoy doing something for the local Ecosystem, such as exclosures for Piping Plovers, or hopping in a rowboat to clean Swallow Boxes so the birds will re-use them...then this is the program for you. We worked hard, ate well and had a great time, while providing needed help on the Refuge

I've always wanted to see the wild horses of Assateague and Chincoteague. How amazing to share the magnificent island with them -- and learn in depth about the ecosystem, culture, regional cuisine, history, etc. It was a wonderful week made even better because our service projects were fun and made the trip very affordable.
