This program was all I hoped it would be!! The girls in charge were well organized and had super knowledge of the Iditarod. And we really lucked out with the weather!!! All of the speakers helped us understand the importance of the care the dogs receive throughout their lives!! Seems they are much more important than the mushers!! A wonderful program!!

I just returned from the Iditarod program in Anchorage, Alaska. I have wanted to experience the Iditarod for years, and this program exceeded my hopes. Patty was perfectly organized and Nan was superlatively knowledgeable while being humorous and approachable. The meetings with trainers, mushers and dogs were highlights. The food was wonderful, the accomodations were comfortable and very well located (and the staff was great). This was a wonderful introduction to the Spirit of Alaska.

If you love dogs, mushers, great program guides, snow and ice (sometimes!), interesting program-mates, excitement, history, and nature, then I’ve got just the Road Scholar program for you. Fellow reviewers are right…..The RS Iditarod is a fantastic adventure well worth attending. We met dogs, mushers both advanced and novice (a couple that we’re sure to read about in the future), Nelson the Moose and Hugo the Grizzly. We traveled to a frozen lake in Willow to watch 70 mushers, each with their hand-picked team of 16 dogs, fly past us on their first leg of a 1,000-mile test of endurance and skill. And if you’re looking for some fun, the “Run with the Reindeer” down Anchorage streets is Alaska’s answer to the Bay to Breakers. What a grand adventure.

Seeing the Iditarod Sled Dog Race, meeting the Iditarod mushers, attending the Mushers' Banquet: All these were made so much more meaningful after the presentations we heard about the dogs and dog sledding, and after all the pre-trip suggested reading.

This is a great little trip for anyone who has an interest in the Iditarod. Seeing the Iditarod was on my bucket list and Road Scholar gave me a great experience while I crossed it off the list. However it proved so interesting that now I must attend the finish in Nome! The hotel is in a Great Location and you can walk to any and all meaningful destinations in downtown. Knowledgeable leaders and enjoyable presentations make for a great experience!
