Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Arguably the best vacation trip I've ever experienced. The combination of activities, unique destinations, and educational content was wonderfully entertaining and inspiring.

If you only have a week to encounter Costa Rica, this tour will give you several samples of its many diverse aspects: mountains, river, and ocean; pristine wilderness, lovely gardens, touristy scene; opportunities to hike, snorkel, white-water raft, zipline, shop. A week full of adventure and fun, smoothly facilitated by our knowledgeable and genial guide Mario.

We selected this program because it seemed to include an interesting variety of destinations (mountain cloud forest, foothills rain forest, and the Pacific coast); reasonable distances between destinations (we did not want to feel like we were spending all our time in a mini van); and some flex ("free") time at each destination. The program met or exceeded our expectations in every way. It was extremely well planned and organized; the activities (nature and bird watching walks, river rafting, and paddling) were fun and interesting; the accommodations were superb; the food was very good (both quality and variety of choices); and the guide and driver were knowledgeable, professional, and just delightful people to travel with.

This program is a well planned and implemented introduction to Costa Rica -- a varied, interesting, beautiful small country with friendly citizens.

My recent trip to Costa Rica was absolutely wonderful. Our knowledgeable guide taught us about the culture, environment, nature and "pura vita" way of life. The land was beautiful with its majestic green mountains, refreshing waterfalls, turquoise blue Pacific ocean and the winding roads that cut through valleys of small towns and plantations. Fresh fruit drinks were a daily delight as were the buffets of native foods. The variety of activities included bird watching hikes through a cloud forest, a safari trip, snorkeling in the Pacific Ocean, touring an open market and coffee plantation, walking the beach, photographing monkeys, white-water rafting and enough free time to add a kayaking tour or a zip-line ride. It was a fun adventure with a warm and friendly group of people who helped to make this trip a very positive experience.

This is a wonderful trip that highlights three of Costa Rica's remarkable climate zones. The flora and fauna seen on this trip were fantastic. Our leader was personable, knowledgeable and fun. I can't imagine anything better!!

We enjoyed this trip very much because we learned about the nature around us, responsible use of the land and its resources and met people who ran small businesses that enriched our understanding of Costa Rica. Our guide and driver were professional, prepared and delightful.

We loved this trip! The lush beauty of Costa Rica is amazing - colorful birds, all kinds of wildlife, mountains and ocean and rain forest, and lovely accommodations. We especially enjoyed the rustic lodging at Rafiki and Savegre. The food was delicious, and our small group was companionable and fun to be with. Our guide, Edwin, was superb, as was our driver. This was our second Costa Rica Road Scholar vacation, and both were excellent. I highly recommend the Three Jewels of Costa Rica.

The Jewels of Costa Rica was really a gem of an experience. From hiking to snorkelling and white water rafting, it was filled with new experiences allowing me to live outside my comfort zone yet enjoy every minute. I would highly recommend this trip to anyone who wants to "pura vida".

An excellent trip showcasing three very different areas of Costa Rica. I learned and saw a lot of new things with other like minded folks. Highly recommend this trip. Mario was a jewel himself.

this was a wonderful program with an excellent guide, Jorge Mario. i very much liked the fact that we were a small group just 17. We were active and therefore saw lots of birds and other wildlife. all the lodgings were excellent. I especially liked the two remote ones, savegre and rafiki-both beautiful spots to spend time. This is my second trip to costa rica. The other was taste of costa rica which was also a great trip.

This was our first ever tour group. We have always done independent traveling. This proved to be a very good experience. Costa Rica is a beautiful country with lovely people. The flowers, trees, plants and birds were all magnificent. The accommodations and food were all good. We never went hungry! We had lunch twice at the homes of local families. Both were very enjoyable and delicious experiences. The activities were well organized. I particularly enjoyed the white water rafting which included wonderful guides. Optional activities were offered in Manuel Antonio and were enjoyable, especially the canopy tour. Our fellow travelers were a great group of people... intelligent, curious, fit and welcoming. And last but not least our guide and driver were both fantastic. I highly recommend the trip. We definitely plan to return to Costa Rica and to pursue other Road Scholar tours.

I have not liked group tours in the past, but wanted to see some of Costa Rica and understand the Road Scholar experience. The trip itself was interesting and informative, and we got to meet a lot of Costa Ricans who provided a "person in the street" view of the culture. The participants were intelligent, interested in learning, had an appropriate level of physical stamina, and were generally intelligent and fun to be with. The tour leader and driver were both great and helped make the experience outstanding. Overall, I would (1) look forward to seeing other areas of Costa Rica, (2) having the same driver and tour leader, and (3) traveling to other places with Road Scholar.

Aptly titled: - Fabulous accommodations; Unbelievable vistas; Exciting activities; and a Guide who is indeed the "fourth jewel" of Costa Rico. - The program has the perfect itinerary for exploring this marvelous country.

This was a great trip. I highly recommend it! There was an interesting variety of activities plus free time, and our guide, Edwin, was one of the best I've had.

This was an excellent first time Road Scholar trip for me.We had an excellent guide(Edwin),great housing,a variety of tasty food with a Costa Rica flavor, enriching experiences whether it be hiking in the cloud forests, birding, rafting, and of course the zip line experience. All the logistics worked out well from the time I left to the time I returned to the USA.
Our group of 12 was just the right size and I thoroughly enjoyed hearing from each of them about their varied travel experiences.I learned alot as I prepare for my next trip.I highly reccomend this program.

Three Jewels in Paradise was the perfect escape from our frigid Minnesota winter! Road Scholar's total immersion into the Costa Rican culture suited me well as I'm not a "sit on the beach" vacationer.

This trip was absoluteley wonderful. The divercity of the program made every day exciting. We had enough free time to enjoy this beautiful country and their wonderful people.
