A great birding trip with a really great birding guide covering the lowlands and the mountains of Costa Rica. So glad we did it!

We saw 300 species of birds. We were able to get excellent sightings of rare hummingbirds, trogons including the Resplendent Quetzal, sun bittern and many other wonderful birds.

This program was fantastic! We saw 264 different species of birds in a variety of beautiful habitats. Our guide was extremely knowledgeable and actually lured the birds to us by imitating their songs. I highly recommend this program.

I was on the Road Scholar "Costa Rica Birding: Off the Beaten Path" program #20616, from Jan.12-23, 2015, and had a great time. It is an intensive program, but you can break free as you see fit as I did a few times, and you can opt out for the early morning birding if you need more sleep, but the birds will wake you up and you won't want to miss the early morning activity and watching the sun come up over the forest. I would recommend a hiking stick as there were 2 hikes where a stick would have been helpful, at Las Cruces down to a river and at Sevegre down a mountain, and at Rancho Naturalisto a hiking stick would also have been helpful. Much of the birding was along a road or on paths at the lodges. The group was very compatable and Edwin Ramirez, our leader, was exceptional. This is a highly recommended experience!

This is a well-thought out trip, sites all recommended in Lawson's bird-finding guide, and close to his recommended "southern itinerary." Lodges all comfortable, from the posh Savegre to the more basic Las Cruces (an OTS research station). It was purely devoted to birding, e.g. starts by first light at 6 am (not hard when there are no evening distractions!), but enjoyed by all the group, almost none of whom were serious birders. (And fine for the more hard-core, namely me.)

If you are looking for some of the rarer Costa Rican birds, this is the trip for you. Also, very little rain at this time of the year.

Suzanne from Beaverton, OR Number of programs attended: 28
Date attended: 01/30/14 - 02/10/14
Great birds! Second birding trip to Costa Rica the still added 76 more Life Birds. Beautiful scenery. Gilberth 'Chito' Molina is a 'Bird Whisperer'
