This trip, our first Road Scholar experience, was a total class act from start to finish. The Katy trail is beautiful with an especially nice surface for bicycles. Pam, the group leader, was first rate. In fact, all of the support crew members were great.

Riding the Katy trail is an excellent program, very well organized, across an amazing landscape of culture, history, agriculture. well worth the cost.

If you want a great bike trip, want to see a beautiful part of the country and share all of that with a great group of people, strangers at first and probably friends that you will stay in touch with, this is a trip for you. The ride itself is fairly easy with flat terrain although with a few long days.

Road Scholar's response:
Hello Anthony! We’re so glad that you enjoyed this program! We review our activity levels periodically and do want to assure you that this program is correctly labeled as Moderately Challenging: "For hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go." As a seasoned explorer, we hope that you will check out more programs like this one!

This is a great trip. The riding was great and the staff first rate. We had not been to Missouri before and learned and absorbed a lot of history and culture and the beauty of the area. The description is right on target, both as to activity and difficulty and as to what to expect.

The Katy Trail was great. Well organized, fun group and staff and a wonderful way to learn about Missouri while cycling along the trail. Mary from Rochester, New York

The Katy Trail was my 1st Road Scholar tour and it will not be my last biking tour. Pam and her staff did not miss a beat; they were very organized, friendly, well informed, and very approachable. The Katy Trail had been on my bucket list for a long time and I am so pleased I had the opportunity to participate in this biking adventure.

Finished my third Katy Trail trip with Road Scholar/St Charles Community College. All three trips in month of October. Fine scenic trail through midwestern American farm land, country towns, along the Missouri River, through the woods, etc. The staff and leaders are excellent, well organized, good food, comfortable eclectic collection of hotels. Trail is mostly flat. Having taken this trip three times, I may do it again.

Bicycling the Katy Trail: Rails to Trails Corridor Across Missouri was my first Road Scholar trip, but certainly won't be my last! This cycling trip had been on my bucket list for over 5 years; every expectation was exceeded. Pam, Todd, and his staff covered EVERY detail.

The Katy Trail Bike Ride was an outstanding trip. Rode in one of the most beautiful places in our country. The weather was perfect and the staff took great care of us. It was a great experience and I am looking forward to more Road Scholar vacations!!!

I agree with the reviews of our trip that have already been posted - it was wonderful! The couple of surprises I had (and I think others too) was how much more difficult it was riding on the gravel trail than on pavement, and how sore our seats would get! There is no coasting on the trail - you are pedaling all the time - so have some of your practice trips on gravel or dirt roads or trails. The bike seats on the rental bikes had gel in them, but you still got sore, even the first day while wearing bicycle shorts with the internal padding. There is a special cream you can buy that helps with chafing. Women may find wearing a pad helpful. So, have fun, but be prepared!

I would have liked more of the trail to be in the trees & closer to the river but both the trip & the staff were above & beyond expectations.

This a great trip with a truly competent and caring staff. Great meals, brewers, wineries, hotels, and scenery every day. Only thing I would add to the info materials is that this trail is not for road bike tires. Four flats were discouraging but the prompt help to repair them was superb.

Some say a great adventure is like a drug and there is nothing like a batch of quality goods to get you hooked. It was my first hit of a perfect bike tour and i want more, more, more. We were catered to every mile of the way. The entire staff were experts in all things biking and they were prepared for what we needed before we knew we needed it. We stayed at a variety of charming hotels, one casino and one super eight that had a great shower and fluffy pillows. We ate at beautiful wineries, historic restaurants a grand casino buffet, and a few times on our own. Pam neatly filled containers with real snacks, built from a sports trainers blue print of shopping lists. Single serve snacks too many varieties to list. Warm colors of bananas and carrots and cool crunchy apples. She set the picnic lunch table with a pristine white table cloth layered with additional embroidered cloths and artfully arranged the gourmet sandwiches, salads and desserts so that it was a feast for the eyes. Oh I wish I could describe the management skills that Pam possesses but most of her work was performed behind the curtain so we only saw the results and all I can say is Pam and her staff are absolutely fabulous. Todd and his charming staff are experienced with all the different levels of bikers that Road Scholar sends their way. The superb organization of luggage, back packs, helmets and all the extra accessories we brought were tagged and packed each day with care. I could go on and on but it says to be brief. I love you guys! I will never forget your kindnesses.

The Katy Trail is a perfect bike trip for all ability levels. The trail is easy to follow and well maintained. The rental bikes were designed for this trail and the support staff superb. We were lucky to have perfect weather and the scenery was beautiful and peaceful. I loved being able to go at my own pace. Our leader was very well organized and handled an incredible amount of logistics for us. Food was plentiful. Participants were fun to be with. This was my first bike trip and I've now found a new passion!

I went on the June trip with two girlfriends, all of us frm California. The trip description was congruent with my experience, though they could not have predicted the hotter than usual weather. The good news...no rain! We all opted for the tour of Jefferson City's Capital and we're glad we had done so. All of the speakers and guides were knowledgeable and I have returned home with a renewed energy and commitment to stay in good shape. I want to do more active trips like this. The group came together well...both couples and solo fliers. The leaders, every one of them, were "on it" when needed and often went beyond expectation. If you opt for five days of cycling, I don't think you will be disappointed.

If you like the description of this trip as it appears in the catalogue you will enjoy the trip. Pam, our leader and the other guides were all very helpful, friendly and encouraging.

The trail is crushed gravel and well maintained. We rode 187 miles during the week. The activity level is an accurate description, one needs to be in good physical condition and put in some bike miles training before attempting this ride. The program is very well organized, so all we had to do was enjoy the ride, scenery, and absorb the educational aspects of Missouri and Lewis and Clark. The extra reading for each day enhanced the experience. We were free to ride at our own pace to a designated rest stop. All of the group were good bike riders, so everyone arrived at the rest stops in a timely manner. This was my third Road Scholar bike trip, and the organization and the trail conditions were excellent.

Very well organized and run program with one of the most relational groups we have experienced in 13 programs. Fun activities off the bike and run by a staff of pleasant people who were eager to make almost any glitch disappear if they could, and they usually did. Not a leisurely ride, but adequately challenging for the cyclist who trained before coming to Missouri. We will look for more similar programs.

My first Road Scholar trip and my first multi day bicycle trip. Except for the rain day on Wed, it was a great trip. Even the rain day was good, we toured the MO Capitol and some old houses in Hermann. Great group of people, very organized crew, helpful handouts. Rental bike were brand new. I rode the whole way, but lots of people took breaks in the bus. I would definitely recommend this trip and any trip sponsored by St Charles Community College!

This was a wonderful biking trip, even for an inexperienced cycler like me! I road parts of each day's mileage and then hopped on the bus. The scenery was beautiful and the staff very accomodating....a wonderful combination. In addition, the state capital and the Truman Museum were worth the time to visit. I recommend this trip in the autumn if you like to see the fall foliage. Becky

Just finished my second Katy Trail Road Scholar trip. The trail is a special, beautiful place steeped in middle-American history. The trail is mostly flat, through woods, farmlands and along the Missouri River, through lovely old towns. Fit cyclists can find challenge with 35-52 mile days, while weaker riders can choose to shorten each day's journey by boarding a van at one of the many stops. I may enroll again for the third time next year, and count me in when they finish the trail so that it connects Kansas City and St Louis. The leaders and support staff are skilled, experienced, and friendly.

This trip was both relaxing (mentally) and challenging (physically), which is a great combination for a vacation. I would urge people who may feel like they are too young to fit in the traditional Elderhostel demographic to consider going on this tour anyways, because you'll enjoy a good time with a group of friendly, interesting, and exciting people.

There is nothing about this program that is not good. The Katy Trail has wonderful scenery, and so much history is tied up in this area--Lewis & Clark, westward expansion, development of the railroads... The biking is challenging for seasoned cyclers, and flexible enough so that those who want a bit less challenge can opt out at many points. I liked staying at five different locations--it gave us a chance to explore the towns along the way. The program requires a great deal of organization by the program director as well as Katy Bike Rentals, who provided rental bikes and transportation. Both were outstanding. This is my favorite of the bicycling programs I have participated in.

As two people in their 70's, we found the trail challenging, but fun, the crew extremely helpful, and the scenery beautiful. The rental bikes were comfortable and well maintained. There were snacks aplenty and rest stops as needed. I would recommend this for experienced bikers though you don't have to be endurance cyclers. Just love to bike.

Mary Ann from Weimar, TX Number of programs attended: 20

My husband and I truly enjoyed this program. The activity level is accurate--moderately challenging. All participants were experienced bikers, but had different levels of stamina. I wasn't able to ride every mile, but the majority did. The leaders were very helpful and accommodating to those who wished to stop for the day. The ride through Missouri was beautiful. We are very glad we took this trip.

This was my first Road Scholar adventure, and what a way to begin! If you like to ride a bike and want to see the beautiful Missouri countryside, this may be the trip for you. Be sure to go on the Missouri State Capital tour, for it is an extraordinary building.

James from Colorado Springs, CO Number of programs attended: 1

I found this program to be very flexible on accommodating the various levels of riding ability. I would recommend this program to both the enthusiastic rider and riders that want to be able to ride at their pace. The organizer and the support staff were very friendly and accommodating. Wonderful experience.

If you are in decent enough condition to pedal the miles described in the program details, you will love this program. The scenery is pretty and at times dramatic. Most of the K-Trail is shaded, and so it is fairly comfortable.

This is a terrific trip. From the distances biked to the participants to the RS leader and bike company people to the food and the scenery,it was marvelous. The weather cooperated, the sag stops were well placed, the water was always cold and plentiful, and the trail was as billed. I biked the trail on my one speed coaster and although there were some more challenging legs on the first day, there was no stigma to skipping a section if one so chose. Take this trip. I think you will love it as I did.

This was a fabulous adventure. We had a perfect time!! Great company, and leader/staff, physically challenging as much as you want. Riding the Katy trail was something I have wanted to do for year. I loved all the nature and wildlife, esp. the turtles (16 on the trail over the days of riding), So nice to ride away from traffic and have to just worry only about riding the bike. RS took care of everything else!!

My sister and I have been wanting to cycle the Katy Trail for years. I am so glad that we finally did ! This trip was very well organized. It was wonderful to have all of the accommodations and meals planned out for us. The bottled water and snacks at the sag stops were very much appreciated. The group leaders were all great. It was very comforting to know that a "sweeper" was at the back of the pack in case of any emergencies, that was very comforting. Patty Holloway

This bike trip is structured so that you can ride a long distance (38 to 52) miles per day or any shorter version that you choose. A couple with different distance interests can both be satisfied. The chat surface is well maintained by the State as they see it as an important part of tourism. There are "trailheads" or parking spots with roofed information kiosks every 10 to 18 miles, most of which have clean restrooms though many with non flush toilets. Much of the route is along the Missouri River and the small former railroad towns are nostalgic curiosities. The organizers and support staff could not do enough for us. We stayed in several historic hotels or B&B's and ate in local but charming restaurants. There were 36 in our group and there was no trouble in finding several groups with common or engaging interests to share. Catherine and I had a wonderful adventure. Steve Graef
