This trip was a fantastic overall experience. The snorkeling was excellent, as I had hoped. If you are considering this trip, and I really think you should if you like snorkeling, you should be forewarned about potential substandard lodging at the Daku Resort. While the owners and staff there are great, they do have one unit that is by far the most filthy and disgusting room I have ever seen. The resort owners should really be ashamed of themselves for renting such a disgusting facility. I was placed in a unit they call "the lodge", a small building behind the pool. If I had to guess, I'd think I was placed there because: 1. I'm a single guy and, 2. Everything else was full. Still, that's really no excuse for having such a decrepit facility for a paying guest. The shower floor and wall was so coated with fungus it was hard to even set foot in the thing. There was thick grime on the light switches, refrigerator door and sink handles. The side panel was off one of the cabinets, exposing thick dirt and crud on the bottom and sides of the cabinet. I've honestly never seen anything like it. I was going to post pictures here but, looking at it now, I wonder if they might show up above and I wouldn't want that. In fairness, I will say that the bedding and bath linens were clean. I wouldn't advise anyone not to go to because of the situation at Daku Resort, as the trip really was fantastic. However, make every effort not to let them place you in "the lodge", the place is unbelievably bad. It is possible to contact them in advance to request, at an extra charge, to have one of the air conditioned bures (some of the group did this). That would assure that you wouldn't get placed in "the lodge". Otherwise, I would get in writing in advance from them that you will not be assigned to the lodge. Road Scholar would do well for their future travelers to stipulate that Daku Resort could not place any of their participants in "the lodge".

Road Scholar's response:
We are thrilled to hear that you enjoyed the overall experience in Fiji. After researching your concerns and comments about "The Lodge" building, I would like to respond to your feedback about the accommodations with some information given to us by our contact person at the Daku Resort. Most importantly, The Lodge will not be used again on future programs. The Daku Resort as a whole is building new houses, which regrettably were not finished in time for the start of our program as anticipated. The ongoing construction projects around the property contributed to delayed maintenance within the buildings, as well as the inevitable messy appearance of the grounds. As the Daku Resort wraps up the construction projects and the local vegetation returns, the property will look great with many notable improvements. The resort staff has confirmed that the property and grounds has already started to look better.

Wonderful trip. The snorkeling, the Fijians, the food were all fantastic. Bringing a wet suit was definitely a good idea, so we were never cold during our snorkeling. Great group size and excellent leader.

This trip provides varied settings of coral and fish. The water is shallow enough to see the fish close up. The guides assist in spotting fish or turtles. The location is very scenic and uncluttered with development.

A well organized program with superb snorkeling sites. Our stay at Paradise Taveuni was a tropical dream. Be prepared for tropical climate and a country with a per person GDP 40% that of Mexico.

Beautiful sights, fantastic food, and welcoming people. Learned a lot. RS made my travel arrangements. Had several airline complications, but RS (Samantha) spent hours solving the problems and got me there!.. and the travel insurance compensated me! My experiences indicate Road Scholar = quality programs and service.

"Below and Above Blue Waters - Snorkeling and Exploring in Fiji" was a fantastic experience. Snorkeling for the first time couldn't have been in a better place or with a better group. The corals and fish were amazing and the educational programs revealed the beauty and diversity of life below blue waters. The cultural programs and interactions with the Fiji people made exploring above blue waters a wonderful adventure.

Incredible trip to Fiji! Great mix of snorkeling and cultural activities to provide a well-rounded view of Fiji in such a short time. I wouldn't change a thing about this program and would recommend it for anyone who wants to see world class reefs, and some of the most enjoyable 'off the beaten path' locations in Fiji.

Our Fiji trip was beyond expectations! Except for the a couple of rough, rainy days, the snorkeling was terrific. Having the opportunity to snorkel with a marine biologist was an experience of a lifetime. The Fijian people are friendly and welcoming. At Daku resort, Kenny, his wife Maroni and their sons were especially good ambassadors for their country! This was our first Road Scholar trip, but it won't be our last!

Snorkeling in Fiji is wonderful. Rainbow Reef at Tavenui is a must to experience. I recommend that you take your own fish ID book and a good snorkel cover-up or wet suit to stay warm and avoid jelly stings. Daku and Paradise resorts offer very pleasant to elegant accommodations. You'll come away with images of both the plight and elegance of coral reefs in the face of current human and climate impacts. You'll also experience the warmth of Fijians and better understand their culture.

One of the best programs we have attended. The Fijian people and program hosts were outstanding. However the foot space on the 747 in economy class is severely limited.
