The extension to the Best of Croatia makes this tour a complete package. Zagreb, its capital is the best place to start, learn about the country's complicated history, sense the rhythm of this Eastern European country. The visit to the UNESCO Plitvice National Park with countless waterfalls, lakes and natural beauty was wondrous. For this portion, bringing along a walking stick should make anyone feel right at home.

Even before the sun sank on my first day in my grandparents' beloved country of Croatia did I finally understand why it was so hard for them to leave: I fell in love with this magnificent land, its people, its culture, its overwhelming beauty and open loving arms immediately. And because of this love, I immersed myself in everything Croatian, discovered my roots, learned much of the language, and I am so very grateful for being able to share this trip with my 91-yr-old Croatian father & 86-yr-old Scot-Irish mother. It brought me and my father together. NOW I know why my father has loved his 'old country' so well. If I could, I'd move there. I STRONGLY urge everybody to travel to this beautiful land, the mezmerizing crystal pure indigo Adriatic, visit with the kind, interesting, happy, strong, gorgeous Croatian people, savor the tastiest dishes, enjoy delicious local wines, and fill your bursting suitcases with treasures! And then book a return trip!

All of us agreed this was a superb extension. Plitvice Nat' Park is truly a Unesco....Site, well worth seeing. I think Zagreb is the most beautiful city I have ever seen..and I have traveled literally "around the world." Loved the people and our guide. Doris Clevenger

Plitvice Lakes National Park was the draw that convinced me to sign up for the pre-extension program prior to the yacht cruise along the coast. Having been to Zagreb before, I felt no great urgency to visit it again. But I am so glad I did since the program hotel is located right in the center of the city allowing one to partake of the cafe life during free time. And Zagreb, unlike other European capitals, is easily managed because it is compact and smaller in population than Prague or Paris. And unlike those cities, one does not need constantly to be on guard against petty crime. I thoroughly enjoyed our two days seeing the sights and having free time to promenade in the upper city and drink coffee in the street cafes that line many of the main streets. Now that Croatia has officially joined the European Union, Zagreb exudes a new confidence and cosmopolitan atmosphere. Liberated from its East European masters, it is rapidly growing its economy and claiming its place in the West. And as I had imagined, Plitvice Lakes is a spot not to be missed. It is truly a jewel of a natural area with vistas and waterfalls or pond scenes at every turn. We stayed right in the park and had two half days to explore the park from one end to the other. All told, this extension is a fabulous introduction to the country of Croatia and set the context for the rest of our time in that country quite nicely, thanks to the expert professionalism and guidance of our study leader, Alan Staresina. It was great to have the opportunity to get to know him on his home turf prior to commencing our cruise along the Dalmatian Coast together. Thanks, Alan! You are the best.
