Birding the Maya Route is a multi-interest journey. Not only are the birds and birding spectacular but Mayan cities of Copan and Tikal well worth the trip. I also cannot say enough about Pico Bonito. Everything there was extraordinary from the Lodge itself, the locale, and the birding.

An outstanding and varied programme. It took us to different types of birding habitat so that we were seeing new birds almost every day. I loved combining the Mayans with birding and the fact that we saw some spectacular birds at the Mayan sites including the Pale Billed Woodpecker at Cahal Pech and the wonderful Scarlet Macaws at Copan. Small group and outstanding leadership contributed to overall satisfaction. Philippa from England

Excellent trip The birding leader was exceptional

Program a mixed bag, some sites good others poor. Needs a definite rework of itinerary and leadership.

Program is poorly planned and executed. Low return on dollar investment. Low on quality and high in the quantity of time spent on buses. Birding was good in Belize, but subpar in Guatemala and Honduras if finding lots of birds is your goal. Several half-day hikes yielded less than ten birds total. Those that were observed were rarities. If you are traveling with a spouse who is just barely tolerant of a birder, this is not the trip for them.

We were the middle of three overlapping groups and suffered as a consequence. The preparations and their communication were confused from the start and we clearly got the second team in leadership. For birding the countries are relatively similar and did not repay the long travel involved. Pure Costa Rica or Belize would be better. However as an introduction to the countries and to the great ruins of Tikal and Copan, the trip was fascinating and informative.

The trip, though basically enjoyable, was marred by poor leadership and mismanagement. The leader did not have a scope, and was not sufficiently knowledgeable about either the birds or the trails. I wanted more use of local guides. Some the hiking was more strenuous then "moderately challenging". Without improvement, I would not recommend this trip. Jean T. Berkeley

Unfortunately our program was not set up properly from the beginning. Our previous Roadscholar birding trips have been great. Our guide was not familiar with the total itinerary and some days everyone including himself were wondering what we would be doing that day. Two many days were spent traveling on the bus (up to 9 hours some days). We had three different buses during our trip of which two were not good. The three night stay at Eco-Hotel Ram Tzul was not good. Rooms, birding and food were subpar.. This portion of the trip could be totally eliminated in my opinion. There were several other problems but won't get into them. We did enjoy the ruins at Tikal and Copan and the hotels at those locations. I cannot recommend this trip based on the experiences we had. I am confident Roadscholar will be looking at this program and hopefully making changes that would make the trip enjoyable.
