We have taken this program eight times. We love Door County in October, when it is less busy and more colorful. This program is our annual Door County vacation. It offers a chance to learn about the history, geography, people and industry of this unique Wisconsin jewel. Every year we learn about something new and meet new friends.

The Door County Experience was very educational and enjoyable, especially since Door County is so beautiful in the Fall, and Rowley’s Bay Resort is a fantastic venue with rustic, comfortable accommodations and excellent meals. The wonderful food, especially the pastries, really tests participant willpower! I thought Mike Orthober's presentation on taxidermy would be boring. But to my surprise, he was outstanding! I didn't realize that taxidermy was such an art form. I was really impressed with all the research and detail that Mike does to get each of his animals accurate -- correct reassembly and getting the colors and pose correct. Our visit Thursday to the Door County Historical Museum where Mike explained to us all the effort involved in creating his wildlife diorama was outstanding! He is truly a master at taxidermy and wildlife art!

Though we have been to Door County before, lectures on the geology of the area, unique forests, plants and animal life greatly enhanced my understanding and appreciation of the area. the program was very well organized and the lectures were great. We visited places we would have missed if we had gone on our own. There wasn't am much hiking as I would like but the activity level was as advertised. We did have most of one day on our own. The accomodations are the usual Road Scholar level - clean, comfortable but not fancy. There was a great variety of food in the buffet meals at Rowley's Resort. We also ate at local restaurants and both food and service was very good. Plan a couple extra days before or after as there is so much to see it wasn't possible to do it all within a 5 day program.

We planned our Door County Experience to coincide with the peak fall leaf colors (3rd weekend in October). That certainly enhanced our visit. We enjoyed the expertise of our presenters, the attentiveness of our group leader, the convenience of our sessions, the quality of field trips, and the camaraderie with group members.

A wonderful program! Our presenters ranged from a taxidermist to a naturalist, artist, innkeeper, orchardist, folklorist and musicians. The food and accommodations are great. We give it five stars!

As a first time participant, I was totally impressed with everything, from the preparatory materials sent prior to the event, to the genuine warmth and friendliness of our facilitator, to the knowledge and passion of the local instructors. The accommodations were excellent, the program was well-organized and exciting, and the participants were warm and welcoming. What a wonderful way to meet people, expand your education and have fun!

Paula & Jim from Medina, OH Number of programs attended: 5 Date attended: 08/15/15 Our experience with the Door County Experience was wonderful. All of the speakers were informative and interesting. The facilities were comfortable and homey. The tours were well-organized and provided enough docents for our large group. The coordinator, Donna was an effective soft-spoken leader. Our group members were fun, interesting and friendly. We rate this experience a 10 out of 10.

Door County Experience is like a step back in time as there are no chain stores or motels on the peninsula. Excellent presenters and field trips make this a delightful getaway.

If you love beauty and nature you will love visiting Door County Wisconsin for this program! It is very informative with interesting speakers on the geology, biology, and history of the area as well as visiting an orchard, museum, attending a fish boil, and other fun activities. In this program one can be as active or inactive as you wish, and I would highly recommend it!

I had never been on a Road Scholar program before. I had the best time. Our group leader was terrific and made sure that everyone had a great experience. We did and saw a lot of things that we would not have known about if we were just traveling on our own, for example we had a talk by a world class taxidermist and saw his work at the Door County Historical Society later that week. We had a great group as well. The hotel was terrific as well. Thanks, Road Scholar!

This was only my second Road Scholar program and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It gave us an overview of an amazing piece of land in a beautiful state. We had lectures each day on such diverse subjects as the geology of the area, the natural world, cherry orchards, ship wrecks, taxidermy, watercolor and the history of the resort that we called home. We toured lighthouses and museums, hunted for fossils, and experienced villages. We met others with a love of travel and learning. We visited local orchard and had free time to tour on our own, shop, bike, golf, read a book or go on a photography venture or even take a nap. Food was exceptional from freshly baked sticky rolls to an authentic fish boil and from a huge buffet to a couple of lighter meals in town restaurants. Five stars for Door County and for the Road Scholar program!
