I always enjoy traveling with Road Scholar. The trips are well organized, and the participants are friendly and interesting. Viewing the beautiful scenery, and learning something new at the same time, makes it even better. Keep up the good work!

If you love train rides, especially with steam locomotives and old fashioned cars, this is the program for you! The time of year is perfect for Fall color and good weather. We figured we covered about 1100 miles between train & bus rides. Take advantage of riding with the engineer on the Royal Gorge train(not steam locomotive) (costs extra & you should arrange in advance).

An excellent coverage of early railroads in Colorado, their relationship to the economy of Colorado and the silver and gold mining industry. Even though I have just a casual interest in railroading, I certainly found this fascinating plus enjoyed the physical activities.

What a wonderful opportunity to not only enjoy the change of seasons in the Colorado Rockies, but learn the fascinating history of the state's transportation and development! It exceeded my expectations!

My wife and I 'rode' the historic railroads of Colorado. EXCELLENT trip... PJ was the organizational guru .. top notch.. very friendly and efficient. Al was the train 'expert'. I did not expect all the info that he gave us.. TRULY INFORMATIVE !!

Excellent program! Our leaders, Warren and Betty Hill, were very knowledgeable and interacted well with the group. We learned a lot and had a great trip! Beautiful scenery; the aspens were at their peak!

Our first Road Scholar program is going to be hard to top! Al, PJ and Victor made a powerful team! We were told by other participants how skilled these folks were when compared to other trips they had taken. I know that we could not have put together on our own a trip that included all that we did and saw in basically a week's time! It definitely exceeded our expectations!

Karen from Springfield, MO Number of programs attended: 17

It was a wonderful program. I learned so much about trains and had a great time riding them. I think most people would enjoy this program.

The Ride Colorado's Historic Railroads program was a wonderful way to escape the summer heat of the Midwest while seeing beautiful scenery on enjoyable and historic trains. The lesder ,Al, new a lot about Colorado railroads and history and made his talks interesting

In addition to enjoying the beautiful scenery, historical information, and train experiences and appreciating the guidance of Al and the support of P.J., I found the other participants to be interesting and stimulating in the questions they asked, the topics they discussed, and to be a substantial part of the making this trip excellent.

Richard from Syracuse, NY Number of programs attended: 3

Every day was filled with wondrous scenery, and the train trips with explanations about their building and influence on the development and settlement on Colorado are enlightening. This is a not-to-be missed adventure if you are a train and mountain scenery buff.

Annie from West Hills, CA Number of programs attended: 5

Wonderful learning experience of Colorado's narrow gauge railroads. Beautiful scenery and vistas of the mountain areas!!!

Daurel from Jacksonville, OR Number of programs attended: 4

Two things were utterly amazing on this trip. 1. Al Dunston's commentaries as we rode along in the bus. He is a wonderful storyteller and lecturer on railroad and Colorado history and personalities. 2. Colorado's scenery is majestic. The train rides were icing on the cake.

Paul from Fairfax, VA Number of programs attended: 1

I am more of a train rather than a history buff...so I was very surprised to experience the fine educational program about the birth of the Colorado railroads and how they supported immigration to Colorado and development of the mining industry. Fascinating and delightful!

Lydia from Saint Paul, MN Number of programs attended: 2

I definitely agree with Barbara and Laura. Something for everyone – spectacular scenery, historic narrow-gage railroads, museums, historic houses, expert and wide-ranging historical commentary, well-organized and attentive tour leader.

Barbara from Onekama, MI Number of programs attended: 28

Would recommend everyone, not just railroad buffs, to take this trip.

Laura from San Francisco, CA Number of programs attended: 3

This trip was a delight in terms of providing a wonderful variety of train experiences amidst breathtaking scenery, and an excellent educational program taking place on the bus as we moved from one site to the next. It was a program all about the history of Colorado and how that was inextricably linked to the development of a unique rail system. I highly recommend this program.

What a wonderful week. Not only did we learn a great deal about the lore and history of the development of railroards in Colorado and what caused them to be, but we saw the beauty of the fall aspen folage and some wonderful wildlife. A well run program.

Dennis from Carlsbad, CA Number of programs attended: 1

I particularly enjoyed the train rides and learning so much about the history of the railroad in Colorado. The bus ride the last day was much too long, but other than that I loved the program and received excellent value for my money. Everything ran on time and as expected, which I really appreciate. Our instructor was passionate and extraordinarily knowledgeable. Overall, a great experience.

With a great group of folks we learned about the early history of Colorado from our very knowledgeable leader. We got to see parts of Colorado that can only be viewed from a train. It was a very enjoyable trip.

Sondra from Montrose, NY Number of programs attended: 14
Date attended: 07/18/14 - 07/26/14
Although I am not a true train devotee, I thoroughly enjoyed this program. There was so much beauty to see & so much history to learn. The train excursions took us to places that would have not been available to view by any other means. This is a trip for anyone who would like to see more & learn more about our country.

Norman from Winthrop, MA Number of programs attended: 3

Scenery is great. I am not a train buff but I like the Rockies. Train rides were mostly interesting and Al, your host, tell stories about the history of not only the trains but the people of the area that make the trip come alive. Food at times left much to be desired. High altitude might trouble some people. We were usually at 8,000 feet average for the 8 days. Made me and my wife feel constantly tired. Saw many folks taking cat naps as we traveled from spot to spot. Overall a very interesting and enjoyable 8 days.

Don from Petaluma, CA Number of programs attended: 4

This program was much more than trains. We saw soaring mountains, rushing rivers, deep gorges, wildflowers and wildlife as well as learning about the history of the area from the Ute Indians to miners to railroaders. Much of what we saw was only visible from the trains. It is a great introduction to the Rocky Mountains.

Laurie from Chula Vista, CA Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 06/13/14 - 06/21/14
An incredible program. I was concerned only gear heads would enjoy this tour, but I was so wrong. The country we traveled through was startling beautiful. I took nearly 2,000 photos! Our tour guides were friendly, continuously available, and took care of every detail. I loved learning the history of Colorado through its citizens and families. One caveat: we were asked to sign overbroad releases which would have released the travel companies from liability for their own recklessness. In fact, a jeep company employee misrepresented (probably innocently) the coverage of the company's release. Other than that small issue, this trip will stay as one of our most enjoyable trips in the United States.

This is an excursion through a unique area of the United States unavailable in any other form. The program should interest those for whom hustory is interesting. What we saw is completely different than what early settlers experienced. To a history buff, this is fascinating.

As a first time Road Scholar participant, I wasn't sure what to expect. From the beginning of the trip to the end I was overwhelmed at the "class act" this trip provided. I am already looking forward to planning another adventure.

This was my first Road Scholar tour and it was absolutely amazing. The scenery alone was majestic and I learned a great deal about trains that I was not aware of. Met some wonderful people and made new friends. Definitely a great way to travel and I would highly recommend this trip especially if you are interested in trains, railroads and the awesome mountains of Colorado.

This is an outstanding and unusual tour of the remarkable state of Colorado. Many segments are traveled by historical railroads including the exciting Durango to Silverton, Pike's Peak, Georgetown Loop, and Royal Gorge. The scenery is awesome. Great snowcapped mountains, white-water streams, and deep gorges are among the awesome sights. The instructor and organization are outstanding. Historic tales of the early railroad and road developers are extremely interesting. The cost is very reasonable given what this tour contains.
