Program #10403RJ
6 Days | 5 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

It's more than the Biltmore (though that's great). The friendly, gentle people of Asheville will share a fun ride on the Smoky Mtn RR and introduce the Cherokee people, a fascinating culture within a culture.

All the superlatives apply to this program. Biltmore is one of the most fabulous houses in the United states and the Blue ridge Parkway is one of the most scenic roads in the United states.

An excellent program, well organized with very interesting day trips. We saw a variety of terrains, from the beautiful mountain scenes to river valleys. The various lecturers and guides were friendly and informative. Not hard to see why it is listed as "most popular" in the catalog. Jane and Daryl have put together an exceptional experience for us.

Jane, our guide on this tour, was excellent. Her motto was "tell me what you want to do & we'll see how we can get it done." Our days were packed full of interesting activities. Mars Hill has collected a group of interesting people, from Mary the trolly driver, to Davy our guide at the Indian village. The leaves were just beginning to change when we arrived & everyday we could notice more color--until the last day on our ride on the Blue Ridge Parkway when we had some spectacular leaf color. We attended when the tour was housed at the Renaissance Hotel in downtown Asheville. It is centrally located, and we had very good service and wonderful meals. They were very accommodating to our vegetarian diet.

Fantastic tour--So much to see and learn, and Jane has deep knowledge and obvious love of this beautiful area and its important sites. Thank you so much, Jane and Daryl.

This program was in a beautiful part of the country around Asheville, NC and the Blue Ridge Mountains. The guide was fantastic, made sure everything was perfect, was knowledgeable and had a great sense of humor. I can't wait for my next trip to somewhere equally fantastic.

I feel like I have an increased appreication and understanding of Western North Carolina -- its people, its geography, its culture. Wonderful trip to take with Road Scholar folks!

What a great way to learn about Western North Carolina. Something new to see everyday with background information to make it more meaningful. Thanks Jane and Daryl for sharing your stories and love of the area.

Anne from Fort Washington, PA Number of programs attended: 9

The natural beauty and rich history of western North Carolina presented by people who obviously love their area combined to make this trip a memorable one. From the enthusiasm of Davy Arch, a Cherokee artist, who introduced us to his culture, to the able and caring leadership of Jane Huffman this trip was full of information and fun. Our bus driver, Bill, entertained us with his humorous stories while Darryl, another leader, shared touching stories of growing up in a tightly-knit southern family. The accommodations were comfortable, the food plentiful, and the other participants were friendly and interesting. I highly recommend this trip as one of the best of the nine I've taken so far.

Well-organized; fine accommodations; wonderful meals; superb scenery, interesting historical sights; excellent speakers and a wonderful group leader, Jane Huffman, whose enthusiasm for her home state is contagious! A never-to-be-forgotten experience. Bravo!

Nikki from Boynton Beach, FL Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 10/20/13 - 10/25/13
Well-organized program with a good combination of group learning and independent opportunities. Lots of walking (some hilly) possible, but it is also possible to opt out of much of it. I especially liked the Biltmore gardens, the impressive Asheville architecture (take info on the architecture as you walk around the city because it makes for a better experience), and the Cherokee segment. Come prepared with layers of clothing due to sudden weather changes. The Mars Hill staff is terrific. Finally, the mountains are "uplifting" in their beauty.

Charles from Clayton, NJ Number of programs attended: 8

Any Road Scholar interested party;this is a well put together program both from the perspective of interest and knowledge!

George from Midlothian, VA Number of programs attended: 2

This was a great program to learn about the history, culture, and natural and man-made beauty of Western North Carolina. I would recommend this to anyone interested in the beauty of the mountains in that area.

Ronald from Jacksonville, FL Number of programs attended: 9
Date attended: 10/13/13 - 10/18/13
This is my 9th Road Scholar program (10/13/13). The lecturers were outstanding. The hostess was accommodating. Jane always had snacks and drinks available and even gave us a boxed lunch to take on our ride back home although lunch was not included in the program materials. All of our time was well spent. Comfortable bus (I don't like vans). The Biltmore estate should not be missed. Ron from Jacksonville, Florida.

My daughter and I loved our RoadScholar tour. It was informative and we met the most wonderful group of people. Try it, I think you will like it.

Nice, cool Fall trip. Leaves just starting to turn. The YMCA rooms were dorm-like, no refrigerator, or TV. beautiful setting.I question riding a trolley from YMCA rooms to Asheville..seemed very dangerous. I would have gone in the car if I had known we were getting on an Interstate with that wooden open-air with no seat belts and cars 65-70 whizzing by.Road Scholar needs to look at the safety of this. Davy Arch is Great!

gary from Springfield, MO Number of programs attended: 1

This was our first experience with this program. We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the Smoky Mointains. The room accommodations were clean. However, our room had no television or wi-fi access. The food was abundant and yummy. Our host was wonderful. The program was well planned and had a nice variety of activities. The group of fellow travelers were just the nicest folks ever. Thank you, Road Scholar, for a delightful learning experience.

Carolyn from San Francisco, CA Number of programs attended: 1

Don't miss this opportunity to learn and be with others who are intrigued by the particular location and subjects too. I purposefully came alone and all were welcoming. A smart and cozy experience! Would do it again in a heart beat!

Barbara from Cinnaminson, NJ Number of programs attended: 6
Date attended: 10/28/12 - 11/02/12
Despite some closures because of hurricane Sandy, Jane Huffman made sure we got as much of the programming in as possible. This is my 6th Road Scholar trip inside of a year and she is by far one of the best leaders I have had. The facility was wonderful- the food and food service was excellent. The speakers were informative and engaging.I'd recommend this trip to anyone.

Patricia from New Port Richey, FL Number of programs attended: 1

This was my first Road Scholar and out of my comfort zone as a lone traveler. It met all my expectations and then some. Will be looking forward the next experience. Well worth the time and money!
