Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Vanderbilts and Biltmore is more than just a pretty house, a pretty big house, that is. We learned so much about how George Vanderbilt's dream led to the conservation of the vast woods in the 123,000 acres he purchased. We also learned how the descendents of George became most innovative and aggressive to present the House to the public. It is a remarkable organization with very satisfying results in a daylong visit to appreciate not only the art, architecture and furnishings of this huge home, but the landscape and gardens. Wonderful experience designed by all.

We thoroughly enjoyed our 2nd Road Scholar trip. The diversity of the program was just right - a little of everything in the area. The group mixed well and it made for a very nice time - and I learned from them also!

My wife and I enjoyed the week. The lectures were excellent, tour guides were great and the food was good. I would recommend up-grading the accommodations at the Blue Ridge Assembly; the rooms need new carpets, paint, etc. The program director (Jane) was excellent. She went out of her way to adapt the program to the weather conditions. Snacks were excellent too. Stan & Carol Ann,NY

Accomodations: Blue Ridge Assembly - spacious room, plenty of hot water, delicious meals, great staff, natural surroundings. A+ Tour: Enjoyed the Folk Art Center shopping and exhibits, ditto for the Blue Ridge Parkway tour. The Asheville tour went on too long. Several of us would have liked to return after the 2:30 tour of the Basilica. The meal in Asheville at Thai Basil was reasonable and tasty. Some of the shops are closed due to the economy. The trolley ride from the Assembly was awful- no suspension on that vehicle ! In contrast the motor coach was a great ride on other days and the driver Bill was a gentleman. Don't miss the Ice Cream shop at Antler Village in the Biltmore Estate! Warning, if you don't like narrow spaces, don't take the Winery tour, instead you can circle around the back of the building and visit the wine tasting and store by following the handicap ramp. The day at the Biltmore was a great photo opportunity outside and in the gardens. The meal in the Stable was generous and nice. There is another ice cream store here and various shops just outside the building. I took the Butler's tour which was interesting, especially the electrical and heating systems in the basement...lots of steps, however. Everyone in Asheville was friendly and polite. The mountains were beautiful. Jane, our tour guide, knows it all and we had lots of activities. Great tour and great value.

Thanks for a good experience. It had its flaws (too much repartition of the Vanderbilt story) but all in all I was grateful to see God's creation in that part of Western North Carolina.
