Program #13160RJ
7 Days | 6 Nights
ACTIVITY LEVEL: Moderate
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
Dale from Whitehall, PA Number of programs attended: 2

This program met all expectations and went beyond. It opened our eyes and minds to so much of which we were previously unaware. We plan to return to the Black Hills.

Jacqueline from Sacramento, CA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 09/28/14 - 10/04/14
This program met all my expectations and then some! Our Program Leader, Karen, was friendly, enthusiastic and her familiarity with the places we visited was interesting and educational. We had great accommodations and excellent food at the K Bar S Lodge in Keystone. I would definitely recommend this program!

Alice from West Chicago, IL Number of programs attended: 2

Mauvine from Reno, NV Number of programs attended: 14

The information presented was very very well done. This was my 5th visit to this area but excepting one intergenerational program had been done individually. Take a ROAD SCHOLAR program; you will see more, learn more and have many to discuss the days interesting events.

Diane from Santa Cruz, CA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/14/14 - 09/20/14
Adding to what others have said, all the logistics were handled very well. I appreciated the variety of experiences and environments. I listened to two different talks by Park Rangers at Mt. Rushmore and was pleased to hear that they did not gloss over or diminish the poor treatment of native Indians by our government. This was my first Road Scholar trip and I very much enjoyed it, but would have liked more interactive learning and discussions.

Kathleen from Farmington, CT Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/14/14 - 09/20/14
The program was enriching and stimulating. What a beautiful part the USA, and what nice people we met.

Beverly from Harrisonburg, VA Number of programs attended: 19
Date attended: 09/14/14 - 09/20/14
We had a wonderful time! Our tour leader Jerry was very knowledgeable about history and the mechanics of leading a program - very considerate. The scenery was magnificent and so different from other areas of the country. For me, the day at Mt. Rushmore was the highlight. I LIKED all the facilities altho some people complained about the square architecture of the public facilities. The Monument is awe-inspiring and amazing. The trips to the Badlands and the Black Hills were very enlightening - never seen such country before. Buffaloes and burros right up beside the coach, and prairie dogs curious and active! The train ride to Hill City was relaxing and enjoyable - good scenery. The museum in Hill City was excellent - fossils of prehistoric life, especially of dinosaurs - Kids should really enjoy that visit. Our lodging was excellent, the staff VERY helpful, the location was away from the tourist places in Keystone (but close) and was very calming and relaxing. We could say Good Morning and Good-nNight to GW's profile only about three+ miles away. Food was good , accomodations very nice! All in all, one of the best programs I have experienced. (This is my 16th Elderhostel/Road Scholar program.) I give it an A+! Beverly from Virginia

Nan from Cadillac, MI Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/14/14 - 09/20/14
This program exposed us to a unique combination of experiences and sites that we may not have pursued on our own. We learned about the Black Hills from a variety of perspectives - its rugged natural beauty, rich history and compelling cultural dynamics. Great experience!

Annie from Houston, TX Number of programs attended: 23

Herb from Normal, IL Number of programs attended: 1

This was our first Elderhostel experience and it exceeded all of our high expectations! The Lodge, meals, tour guide, day trips, and lecturers were all awesome. We had a wonderful week and have been highly recommending the experience to our friends. Thanks to everyone who made possible this great week in this extraordinary part of America's landscape, beauty, and history.

Dominic from Charlotte, NC Number of programs attended: 2

Every day was an adventure that was informative, diverse and fun. We heard interesting lectures on subjects that we soon got to experience first hand. The tour guide was super efficient, knowledgeable and everyone had a good time of it. Not hard physically but got to experience a world class tour of the Black Hills and Badlands and what they are all about. Go!

Donna from Carbondale, IL Number of programs attended: 3

Jan from Red Wing, MN Number of programs attended: 14
Date attended: 08/17/14 - 08/23/14
Thoroughly enjoyed this tour. Although I have visited the Black Hills and Mount Rushmore numerous times over the past 40 years, I did not at any time feel as though the material presented, or the field trips, were repetitious or boring. The "lectures" Jerry presented on the bus en route to various venues were just as informative as the formal presentations. I highly recommend this trip!

Barbara from Colusa, CA Number of programs attended: 16
Date attended: 08/17/14 - 08/23/14
Until visiting South Dakota on the Black Hills and Badlands program, I had no idea how beautiful and historically interesting the area is. Our field trips were visits to captivating places and the speakers, and our delightful guide, each helped us understand what we were seeing. I am so glad I went.

Rita from Minnetonka, MN Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 07/27/14 - 08/02/14
Can't think of a better way to enjoy the Black Hills than with a Road Scholar group and its leadership. It was exciting, fun and an opportunity to learn the history, the Lakoto Sioux culture, the geological history and to see all the beauty in a very short time.

Kenneth from Catonsville, MD Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 07/13/14 - 07/19/14
Great trip to Mount Rushmore -the only way to really be able to see and take in the areas and and the Sites. Food was great!

Linda from Henrico, VA Number of programs attended: 1

Seeing Mount Rushmore was on my "bucket list" and this adventure was just the way to do it! Our guide Jerry is a South Dakota native and was a wealth of knowledge about the area. We were certainly kept busy and I learned so much! This was my first road scholar program and I plan on learning with them again!!

Ann from Prospect Heights, IL Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 06/08/14 - 06/14/14
This program is excellent. It exceeded my expectations. The Lodge was situated near Mt. Rushmore, with a beautiful meadow & stunning landscape all around us. Our leader was extremely knowledgeable about everything having to do with South Dakota. All of the speakers were excellent. Who knew South Dakota had so much to offer!

Sandra from Knoxville, TN Number of programs attended: 1

My husband and I celebrated our 25th anniversary on this trip. We had a wonderful time. Our guide was excellent, we learned a lot and met some wonderful people. There was a considerable amount of information presented and we had an excellent time. This was our first Road Scholar trip. It exceeded expectations and we can recommend it.

Beverly from Arcadia, CA Number of programs attended: 8
Date attended: 06/15/14 - 06/21/14
I was very happy with the Program, I would say it exceeded my expectations. We did so much in that amount of time. It is a very good value for the amount of money paid.

Trish from Catonsville, MD Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 06/08/14 - 06/14/14
We went to see Mt Rushmore but we had no idea that South Dakota was such a diverse and beautiful state. Each day provided amazing sites to see and even after a full day, the evening speakers could still mesmerize us. We highly recommend it,

Debora from Norfolk, VA Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 06/08/14 - 06/14/14
I never expected the beauty, the ruggedness, the lushness, and the variety of scenic landscapes during our tour of Mt. Rushmore. Before this trip, I thought South Dakota only offered Mt. Rushmore. Was I ever surprised! From the first day listening to a representative of the Lakota Indian Tribe, observing the statues, traveling through the Black Hills, Badlands, Custer State Park and ending up with the outstanding authors and woman rancher - everything was enjoyable and informative. I could add more, but all of you must go to have your own experience. Thanks to the staff and especially our trip leader Bob Drabaek that made it possible. Debora Mosher, Norfolk, VA

Karen from Raleigh, NC Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 06/08/14 - 06/14/14
Road Scholar presents trips for every interest and activity level. They are very helpful on the phone as well as on line in helping you choose which program you would like as well as answering your questions in how to prepare for each trip.

Thomas from Bethesda, MD Number of programs attended: 13
Date attended: 06/08/14 - 06/14/14
This was my 12th Road Scholar trip and this was the best so far. Visiting Mt Rushmore in the daytime and night was very special. The one disapointment was the vast commercialism at the Crazy Horse site. All the other sites we visited in South Dakota were terrfic and I highly recommend this trip to my fellow seniors.

Tom from Bethesda, MD

Melinda from Antioch, TN Number of programs attended: 6
Date attended: 06/08/14 - 06/14/14
I would highly recommend this trip to anyone interested in the Black Hills region of South Dakota. We learned not just about Mt Rushmore and its history, but the region as a whole, from the Lakota to the homesteaders. Learned about gold mining in the area as well as Wild Bill and Calamity Jane. Bob our group leader was wonderful. Each of the speakers were very knowledgable, but also showed us their love of the subject matter. The accomodations were beautiful with a view of George Washington on Mt Rushmore. My husband and I have been on several Road Scholar trips and this is my favorite so far. Very well done.

Gwen from Houston, TX Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 06/08/14 - 06/14/14
If you are considering taking a trip to Mount Rushmore, this is the trip for you. Bob Drabek, the group leader, showed his love for South Dakota, and gave me a greater appreciation for the state.

I came for Mount Rushmore and received so much more. The Black Hills of South Dakota are so fascinating; the geology, Native American contributions, bison and other wildlife, motorcycle rallies, and a look back in time at Deadwood's notable characters. The entire itinerary was one of joyful discovery.

Jessica from Monroe Township, NJ Number of programs attended: 1

I was able to add numerous trail hikes into my day because of where we stayed and lucky for me the tour guide and bus driver played cards! Can't wait to find my next trip!

Mt Rushmore fulfilled a life long dream - definitely worth seeing. But the rest of the tour was fascinating as well. Did not know South Dakota had so much history, unique lands and culture. The speakers and group leader were excellent. Loved it all.

Walter from Springfield, MO Number of programs attended: 1

Mount Rushmore was the first Road Scholar trip for me and my wife. Although an early winter blizzard cut our trip to the Black Hills of S.D. short by two days we got more than our monies worth before we were forced to bail out.

I had a wonderful experience on the Mount Rushmore and Black Hills adventure. We were lucky to have Jerry as our leader. My return to Mount Rushmore was fabulous and the evening program was inspiring.

Natalie from Jackson, MS Number of programs attended: 7

Anna from Gastonia, NC Number of programs attended: 17
Date attended: 07/28/13 - 08/03/13
This was a great program, the hotel was wonderful, large room, had a balcony and could see George Washington while drinking my morning coffee. I went on this trip to see Mt Rushmore, but was awestruck by the Badlands. There were plenty of photo ops, and the half mile hike on Mt Rushmore provided many.Definitely one of the top programs of Road Scholar.

Carol from Saint Paul, MN Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 07/28/13 - 08/03/13
I really enjoyed the trip. The hotel is wonderful and the activities are well planned and education in a beautiful setting.

Carol from Sarasota, FL Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 07/28/13 - 08/03/13
This was a very good program. The combination of natural beauty, manmade wonders and great learning opportunities suited our group of about 34 participants very well. K Bar S Lodge was lovely and our leader Bob was very knowledgeable about SD.

Richard from Fresno, CA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 07/14/13 - 07/20/13
This was a great learning experience. Jerry, our Road Scholar guide did a great job. The speakers were all good and informative. The K bar S Lodge was a convenient and good place to stay. Their food was like home cooking. The agenda was good, except for the last day with a train ride to Hill City, not much to really do in Hill City and the train schedule made time to eat somewhat restrictive. The only real problem was that the bus we were assigned was 30 years old and very slow to go up hills.

James from Arlington, VA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 06/23/13 - 06/29/13
Good for those who want to see the tourism attractions with a guide and bus driver who know them.

Cynthia from Girard, OH Number of programs attended: 9
Date attended: 06/23/13 - 06/29/13
Excellent location. Wonderful lodgings - could view Mt. Rushmore from the lodge. Memorable trip to the Badlands.

Beth from Altamonte Springs, FL Number of programs attended: 15
Date attended: 06/23/13 - 06/29/13
This program proved to be a celebration of Western and Native American heritage thru exhibits and hands on experiences. The Crazy Horse Memorial offers a tribute to the Lakota Indians and offered us the opportunity to view the sculptor's studio and home. Learning about the science lab located at the Homestake Mine was an interesting and thought provoking stop in our journey. The drive thru the Badlands, with it's jagged spires, provided amazing scenery. And, of course, our group leader, Karen, made the trip even more memorable with her knowledge of the area.

Mary from Castro Valley, CA Number of programs attended: 15
Date attended: 06/02/13 - 06/08/13
Your website is very complete and a welcome site to evaluate my selection of new program

Susan from Orleans, VT Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 05/05/13 - 05/11/13
I had the most amazing time on this program. I learned so much...For instance I did not know that the rocks were formed by the plates in collison, and that the members of the" Little House" books by Wilder took place out here, that so much GOLD was hidden in these hills, and that the Badlands was an inland sea. The more I travel in this country, the more beautiful it is.Thank you Road Scholar for a great trip! See you again out on the trail.....

Virginia from Little Rock, AR Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 05/12/13 - 05/18/13
This was my first Road Scholars program and it exceeded all of my expections. Our group leader made the program personal; and she and the other presenters made the history of the region come alive. I am looking forward to going on other programs.

Susan from Lansing, KS Number of programs attended: 1

This was our first Road Scholar adventure and it far exceeded our expectations. The area attractions and educational presentations; Penny, our group leader, and Dan, our coach driver; the accommodations and food; and our fellow participants made this a trip to remember. I highly recommend it to others. This may have been our first adventure, but it will not be our last!

Willa from West Hartford, CT Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 05/12/13 - 05/18/13
Director Penny Island is spectacular making the trip truly informative and not forgetting the fun. Great, great trip that gives a sense of the American history tied up in this place. Could never have gotten a microfraction of the info on my own. Accommodations are very good and the food service at the hotel tried to bend to help people with dietary needs. Lectures were terrific. Perhaps a little heavily packed for 6 days. 5/5 stars. Elliott Rosenworcel
