See our Small Group programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

Wow! This was our first RS Independent City program, and we just loved it!! In fact, I am now looking at other RS Indepent programs. The city of Barceloa is spectacular! So easy to explore on one's own. The lectures and excursions were excellent, enriching our experience in every way.. AND...we loved having the free time that the program features, and we being flexible about meals, both the timing and content. The group activities and meals were great too!

marvin from New Jersey: I enjoyed the October 14-22 Independent Barcelona program 7149. It was intense, well organized and comprehensive The Guide, Lisa Forner and her colleagues, were most knowledgable and answered all questions. Miz Forner was particularly helpful to me on issues I had. Wonderful trip to a remarkable city.

Barcelona is indeed a great city and this program covered a lot of the highlights while also allowing participants substantial time to explore on their own. The Metro is easy to use, the hotel very well located, and our on-site coordinator, Luisa, couldn't have been more helpful--as were the tours and lectures by Sylvia and Andre. Highly recommended to those seeking a fair degree of independence and game for quite a bit of walking.

Barcelona is a great city; folks attending 'independent barcelona' must truly be ready for independence as there are many afternoons and evenings to plan and explore on one's own. this was fine for us, but for those expecting or need more structure, think again. if curious and able, there are a myriad of concerts, museums, and even other nearby cities to explore, which we did by train, all accessible and manageable. great trip!

Very organized and informative program about Modernism and Barcelona. The independent portion of the program in the afternoon allows for the traveler to feel like they have some space, yet have the comradery of other travelers.

Really enjoyed this tour. Barcelona is a beautiful city that is easy to get around on your own for the independent portion of this tour. The food was fabulous and the people seemed friendly.

I had always avoided tours, but this looked atypical and intriguing. Am so glad I decided to give Road Scholar a try. The small group and built in free time made for a most enjoyable experience. That plus the organization, knowledge and warmth of Louisa, our tour guide! Also adding immeasurably to the trip was our resident expert, Sylvia - her lectures and guided tours were both informative and fun. This was a mix of leisure time in a great city, with laughs and learning. I highly recommend it.

Barcelona is one of the most interesting and beautiful cities I have ever visited. The Indpendent Art and Architecture tour is the perfect way to experience all that Barcelona has to offer!

The Barcelona Program was my first Road Scholar trip and it was fantastic! I would heartily recommend it to anyone thinking of this program. The guide, Luisa, and instructor, Sylvia, made the history, art and architecture and the people of Barcelona come alive for me.

Independent Barcelona offers amazing visits to art and architectural offerings and a highly educated guide to interesting backfround information. This trip with a smaller group and more time for independent activities provided a perfect balance for an enjoyable trip.

04/04/14 - 04/12/14 The tour was my first trip abroad and my first trip with Road Scholar. Barcelona was beautiful. The weather was fantastic. I learned so much about so many things, history, the arts, politics. It would be hard to pinpoint one thing as the best. Our guide, Lucy was wonderful. The instructors, Silvia and Oriel were well informed and great lecturer, never boring! I am definitely sold on the Road Scholar Independent City tours -- the mix of guided and free time really worked for me.

This program was a comprehensive experience of Barcelona. The amount of time needed to cover sites, museums, plus personal walk-a-around was good. The hotel was in a fabulous location, with easy access to metro and buses, and famous Gaudi buildings. The hotel breakfast was outstanding every day and our room was comfortable and clean. The program content was well-organized, thorough, and well presented. Lectures were well done, interesting and informative. Good pace of activities, too! Enjoyed fellow Road Scholars. We were all well taken care of by our Program Leader - all very professional. Top marks for this program and its staff.

This was my second independent Road Scholar trip and I thoroughly enjoyed it. I had visited Barcelona before but this time I learned much more about Catalonia and Catalonian nationalism, Gaudi, Miro and Picasso. It was a great mix of organized lectures and tours and free time to explore on your own. Luisa and Silvia are great leaders. The hotel was clean, comfortable and centrally located. As a solo woman traveller, I felt comfortable, safe an welcomed. The other group members were a treat to meet and to spend time with. I could not have enjoyed myself more.... well, perhaps, a liittle less rain would have been nice!

If you are a woman some what hesitant to travel alone, but love architecture, art and history and seek independent time for discovery- put your fears aside and join the independent Barcelona program.

This was my first experience with Road Scholar and it was delightful. Every aspect of the visit to Barcelona was top notch...tour leader, special guided tours, hotel, food and especially the other participants. I'm sure the other participants will concur...a great time was had by all! I fell in love with Barcelona, due in great part to our wonderful leader Amaia. She was delightful and very knowledgeable. I can't wait to return. My only complaint is about the travel service. We did not have enough time between flights from JFK to Paris. My friend and I barely made our flight but my luggage did not! In the future, I suggest the travel agents allow at least two hours between flights when there is a change in terminal. If that is not possible, then an overnight in the departure city should be suggested.

Barcelona is the most beautiful city...Our trip was enhanced by the lovely, boutique hotel as well as it's location.....I didn't want to leave. Road Scholar left no stone unturned to make it one of the best RS programs I have been on.

A perfect combination of good company, guided excursions, and independent free time. Luisa, our group leader, and Sylvia, our instructor, were wonderful and greatly enhanced our experience. Looking forward to another Independent City trip!

Ann from CT The lectures and field trips prepared us well for exploring the city on our own. Luisa, our leader, and Sylvia, our instructor, were both excellent. Hotel was conveniently located.

We couldn't have had a better time: great program and people, leaders and attendees. Barcelona was the star, of course, and we'll be returning. Bad knees slowed us down but couldn't spoil our experience.
