This was an excellent program and the tour leader was exceptional. He handled contingencies very well. The small boat experience (16 people) was fun. The food was surprisingly good. It is important to time the trip when the Mekong river and the Tonle Sap lake have sufficient water.

This was a great trip. It's hard to say which I enjoyed more -- our time in Siem Reap and visiting the temples or cruising on the rivers. The pace of the tour was great and the ship was a perfect blend of activities and free time to enjoy the view as we cruised along the river. We all enjoyed the fact that there was very little cruising at night. The goal was to cruise the rivers during the day so that we could see the life along the river -- and it was wonderful. I am happy that the water level was high enough that we could take the speed boat to cross Tonle Sap Lake and didn't have to take the bus around the lake -- something to think about when planning the date for your trip.

The Best of the Mekong and Angkor what was a truly outstanding learning adventure! Learning about the Khmer Rouge regime and visiting one of the Killing Field and S-21 interrogation center was even harder than going to Europe's concentration camps! Our Cambodian group leader, Bros, and our Vietnam guide, Duong, were both truly wonderful! I will always treasure this learning adventure!

This is a very highly rated trip, and we found out why. In a short period of time we were treated to an amazing introduction to the people and cultures of Cambodia and Vietnam. Our guides, Bros (Pheach Davuth), Thuy Duong Pham, Adam (in Phnom Penh), and (for the Northern Vietnam extension) Long Nguyen were especially knowledgeable, kind, thoughtful, and organized. The size of the small group (20) on the riverboat for a week was ideal. Everybody was friendly and interested in learning and exploring. The staff on the boat was very professional and friendly, and the food was outstanding. Every hotel was clean, comfortable, and better than we expected. The restaurants were also exceptional (we couldn't wait for each meal). The excursions were varied and our experiences were memorable (Artisans Angkor, markets, temples, hearing and observing life along the river, including floating villages, pottery and candy making, etc.) We really appreciated the lectures. The Apsura dancer were a real treat! We highly recommend the extension to Hanoi and Halong Bay. It is worth the extra four days and was one of the highlights of our trip (overnight trip on Halong Bay, exploring the huge cave, water puppet show. The climate is hot and humid, but the bus and sleeping accommodations were air conditioned, and there was always plenty of water available. If you are a coffee connoisseur, the coffee in the Vietnamese coffee shops should not be missed. We would highly recommend this trip to those who like adventure, learning about cultures, meeting new friends--an experience of a lifetime.

When we told people we were going on this trip, almost everyone asked "why there?" Although I have always wanted to go to Asia, I could not have imagined how this trip would make a difference in the way I view the world. Because of Road Scholar we had access to people and places and to behind-the-scenes experiences that many tourists do not have. We saw historic sites and the everyday life of the people- how they live and work, and interact as families, neighbors and co-workers. The activities were sometimes challenging but varied and interesting on topics including history, art, music, language, and commerce. Over the course of the trip we randomly stopped at several houses and at each one we were welcomed by the members of the family, who answered our questions and seemed to enjoy the encounters. I especially enjoyed the dinner in the home of a retired teacher and her family. The boat was a very relaxing way to cover a lot of ground. Since we primarily traveled during the day, we got to see how the landscape and way of life changed as we moved. The crew was very attentive, the accommodations were comfortable, and every meal was a culinary adventure. If you are interested in learning about the past, experiencing an extremely different present, and glimpsing the future of Asia and the world, this is the trip!

this program gives a broad view of the history and culture of Cambodia and Vietnam. The boat voyage down the Mekong helps with forming group bonds and gives an interesting view of the landscape. Our guide Bros, in Cambodia, was lovely - knowledgeable and easy to understand. He was very approachable. Dung, our guide in Vietnam, was also very knowledgeable and helped make the experience interesting and varied.

This program really opened my eyes to a culture very different than the one I have experienced. I have traveled extensively but not in this area of the world. I learned more on this trip than I ever expected and am thankful for the opportunity.

My husband and I have extensive international travel experience which we plan and arrange on our own and travel by ourselves. This is the first Road Scholar tour we have taken and were so thrilled with it we will definitely do it again. Everything was thoroughly vetted from hotels, guides and field trips to local restaurants. It made it very easy for us and the diverse participants were thoroughly wonderful. Don't think about taking a Road Scholar tour, DO IT NOW!

The program in Vietnam and Cambodia was very interesting and well managed. Travel by boat was a real pleasure, relaxed with excellent service and delicious meals. To me, the time on the boat and the Cambodian sights were the highlight. Vietnam was interesting, but I enjoyed Cambodia much more. The only drawback was the heat and humidity and, at times, the crowds. The group was an ideal size.

An amazing, enriching, eye-opening program of cultural and culinary exposure. I urge you to do as much of the pre-reading as you can and to add the Hanoi extension to your plans. Halong bay is not to be missed.

An amazing experience that broadened my world view and gave me an experiential glimpse into the past history of a ancient civilization. The Road Scholar tour guide, Mr. Bros, was beyond excellent in his leadership, knowledge and warmth. He made a great trip into an Outstanding Experience

Great, intense, very educational and meaningful trip. Truly great guides. Cambodia and Vietnam are very different--the contrasts are fascinating and sometimes painful, but I'm very glad I got to experience both countries. I'm glad I went early to Cambodia, took the Northern Vietnam Extension, and stayed longer in Hanoi at the end of the organized trip. I'm also very glad I did so much reading about these countries before and during the trip.

The program exceeded my expectations and provided a thorough educational experience into two cultures. It included historical perspectives to modern development, from village life to the cities. Overall an eclectic experience with a multitude of experiences.

This trip was amazing predominantly because of our knowledgeable and caring guide. The group was small, but the people had all done a lot of traveling to various parts of the world as well as the United States. It was a very social group. Seeing Angkor Wat was an experience I will never. forget/ I would definitely recommend Traveling with Rhodes Scholar even though it took two weeks to recover from the jet lag

This was no run of the mill trip to Asia. Learning about the culture and history of Vietnam and Cambodia was a lesson in perspective. Every detail and activity was well planned and executed to help us understand how and why people live as they do. We learned first-hand how war and government affects people's lives. Every activity, every guide, every place was memorable. It will be easy to tell your friends why you decided to go to Vietnam and Cambodia!

This is a popular tour so I think Road Scholar and the local program providers have been able to approach perfection with the schedule, activities and choice of guides. It is difficult to imagine how the program could be improved. I strongly recommend anyone contemplating doing the program to do it. You will not be disappointed!

The Mekong River Cruise was our first Road Scholar trip and certainly not the last. It daily exceeded our expectations and guide/group leader Thuyen was an important part of making it memorable. He, as well as regional guides, were so helpful and knowledgeable. The river boat was comfortable and food always a taste treat.

Fabulous trip! it was a small group and a small river boat which was only for our group so it was like a private club. Great traveling companions, terrific food, wonderful staff and the guides were outstanding. You could not ask for more even if you were at the most high end resort in the world.

I loved the variety of experiences on this trip that included such diverse activities as seeing burgeoning cities and rural villages, visiting a university, sitting with kids in rural schools, riding in cool busses, bumpy tuk-tuks, and a farmer's ox cart! Being part of life along the river was beautiful and educational. Our warm and friendly guide, Thuy Duong Pham, was knowledgeable, organized, and kept everything running well--a study in excellence. I will take more trips if guides approach Duong's caliber.

The Program Angor Wat - Vietnam and Cambodia was really wonderful. It was a small group (18), a very nice crew on the boat and we went up the Mekong and I think that I would prefer that to starting at Siem Reap.

I have spent a lifetime dreaming of visiting Angkor Wat. This program gave me that opportunity and it was a dream-come-true. The balance of Angkor Wat and a trip down the Mekong Delta was a perfect pairing. The hotels and meals and our tour leader were all awesome.

Very well constructed program. The riverboat provided a good balance of opportunities to relax and onshore activities. Definitely recommended. Although we usually travel independently, the efficiencies that this tour afforded made us glad to have been with the group.

Fascinating trip that fosters understanding and affection of the culture and history of Cambodia and Vietnam. The trip would not work for the queezy, timid or fastidious but Road Scholar makes it safe and satisfying.

I can't add more to what others have said -- this is a wonderful trip, as being on the river is the best way to see how the local people live and work. Our guide was absolutely the best we have had, out of many great ones, so if you are lucky enough to have Pham Thuy Duong as your guide, you're in for a special adventure. She is super.

Alice from Fork Union, VA Number of programs attended: 18

I totally agree with the review posted by Kate and Bruce from New Hampshire! We had a wonderful trip -- being on the Mekong and in the villages gives perspectives on Vietnam and Cambodia that I cannot imagine getting any other way. And our most special guide -- Pham Thuy Duong -- was a total delight throughout our whole journey.
