I went a day early to relieve jet-lag and to see the Basilica of St. Augustine, which wasn't in the program. The Basilica was a highlight for me, as I once took a grad. course on St. Augustine of Hippo and wrote a drama re him; the Basilica has his life in art, and I got a book, etc. there. The ride in the PM of the lights was fun with glasses which transformed the lights to snowmen, followed by the amusing ghost walk. The historical impersonator's costumes and presentations at the AM talks was a hit.

I have read about people who wanted to share a shuttle from Jacksonville. I also tried to find someone to share the expensive shuttle because the charge is for 1-3 people. However, if you book first and then find someone to share, they charge each person separately. You need to book the shuttle together. I could find no one to do that when arriving but I found a woman to share the shuttle going back. I was charged separately because she had already booked the return shuttle. A woman in my group used Uber and she said it was only $53 each way and she was very satisfied.

This is great tour for those wishing to learn early St Augustine/Florida history. I know more of the history upon attending this trip than I remember ever learning in school. Other highlights included field trips to the fort, Villa Zorayda, Flagler College, the Lightner Museum, and the lighthouse. Having Dianne Jacoby bring the historical characters alive is truly fun and will help me in remembering the history learned during my time in St. Augustine. I would love to stay downtown but I would truly miss the leaders from this program and their portrayal of early St. Augustine. We also met some of the nicest people during our week stay that we will fondly remember.

This was my fourth Road Scholar trip, and it truly exceeded all my expectations. The history of St. Augustine was presented in an exciting and engaging way. I felt like I had been transported back in time thanks to the knowledge and skills of each and every presenter. Diane Jacoby was extraordinary! The entire week was well organized. The hotel was clean and comfortable. The food was delicious. Having the beach across the street was a lovely plus. I highly recommend this program!

Excellent program that we would highly recommend. PROS: Fascinating historical perspective that was presented ina a logical (chronological) order, which made it easy to follow and retain. Diane Jacoby's re-enactments were amazing and beyond our expectation (indeed we were a little skeptical when we signed up). Leaders were excellent. Good balance between on-site lectures and tours. Food was very good. CON (minor): Might have saved a little time if the hotel had been in St Augustine instead of St Augustine Beach. However, the beach did offer a nice escape from the hustle-bustle of the narrow streets in the town.

This is St. Augustine's 450th anniversary year, so its an especially interesting time to visit. The program is excellent, the leaders are terrific. We will long remember Dianne Jacoby's dramatic presentations and her beautiful handmade period costumes. The hotel is comfortable and being able to walk on the beach or pier is an extra plus to this program. This was my 9th R-S program and my husband's 3rd and we highly recommend it!! The Journey Through St. Augustine was indeed well worth the time and effort put forth to be there. Wonderful planning, great educationional presentations of the history of St. Augustine, and the fellowship with others very interesting. I would do it again!

This program exceeded my expectations! Our leaders were well informed and well organized. The historical aspects of St. Augustine were presented in an interesting manner showing progression through time from the establishment of St. Augustine in 1565 to the present. Each day's presentation was accompanied by a meaningful fieldtrip. I would strongly recommend this program for anyone interested in St. Augustine's place in history from the Spanish settlement to the present.

Very historical and interesting city with instructor, Diane Jacoby making it even better,

Christina from Melrose, NY Number of programs attended: 2

Even though I was a Social Studies teacher, my education was sadly lacking on the Spanish history of the east coast. This program remedied that, from "discovery" through the 20th century. The instructor, Dianne, is unique- she is an actress who has written one-women shows about famous women of area history, which she performs to instruct, rather than delivering lectures.

This was the perfect start to the new year. The weather was cool, but nice. The city was still beautiful with the addition of Christmas lights. All the leaders were relaxed, informative and cheerful, and the history was very fascination. I'd even consider doing another program in this area.

It was a pleasant respite from the north and snowstorms. We were thrown back in history of the 1500s. life was so hard then, it is amazing that anyone survived! What a combination of people -- Indians, Spanish, French, Irish, Greek, and "us" I felt like an intruder while visiting the town!

Marlene from Yorktown, IN Number of programs attended: 5

I highly recommend this program. Dianne Jacoby is an outstanding instructor. She brings alive the history of St. Augustine.

This was a Road Scholar to rave about. The Flagler story told through use of period costumes, drama, visits to sites I never knew existed made this a memorable experience. Diane Jacoby was the highlight of the week.

Leader/instructor Dianne Jacoby is a Road Scholar treasure. She is an expert on St. Augustine history, and she tells its story very effectively through dramatic monologues that she has written. Her one-woman show in which she portrayed the three wives of Henry Flagler was a highlight of the program. Lecturers and local guides also made history live. Other highlights included field trips to the fort, Villa Zorayda, Flagler College, the Lightner Museum, and the lighthouse. Hotel accommodations were excellent, as were meals at the hotel and at three local restaurants. This program proved to me, once again, that Road Scholar programs are cost-effective ways to travel and learn.
