ACTIVITY LEVEL: Active
Road Scholar has thousands of educational adventures to choose from. A good way to narrow down our list is to browse our collection of "Most Popular" programs.
See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

It was fantastic and the guides Karen and Jere were very knowledgeable and secured a number of good lecturers that enhanced the experience. If you go, my husband and I recommend you buy the optional small plane flight over Denali and the nearby mountains. Unlike our only other cruise ship experience, the one on this trip with its excursions was also good.

Fantastic trip! We did this in the right order. Flew from Vancouver to Fairbanks and cruised from Seward to Vancouver. This was a segment of a 4 month trip around the U S in our small motorhome. Our weather was perfect! We saw Mt McKinley on a clear day. We saw perfect specimens of many animals including a group of humpback whales "bubble netting" for plankton. A very exciting trip! One of our best!

Would highly recommend this trip to anyone with Alaska on their bucket list. A complete and intered ying survey of the people landforms and animals of Alaska. Info from native peoples enhanced the experience and often widened one's point of view!!! Go!

This trip was a wonderful journey to Alaska, visiting museums rich in art and history, mountains, glaciers, the inland waterway and seeing large animals and sea mammals in their own habitats. Accommodations were very good, and the tedious details of travel were taken care of with efficiency. The leaders, Karen and Jere Christner introduced us to researchers, scientists and native Alaskans who took us behind the scenes at the museums and art centers, We could not have had better or more caring leaders, and this introduction to our most majestic state makes me want to return. This is a perfect once in a lifetime "bucket list" trip to Alaska. The two week adventure covered virtually all of the highlights of Alaska. The inside passage is the only cruise that I ever plan to take and it was a very good experience on Holland America. The group leaders for our tour were outstanding, they took good care of the group and were both informative and enjoyable. The tour was well paced and truly enjoyable. Thanks for another great trip.

Terrific program for people who may have never been on a cruise ship before and are not sure they will ever again. But the location and the scenery and educational opportunity cannot be beat.

The group leaders on our program, a PhD botanist with the USDA Forest Service Alaska Region and a social studies teacher of 33 years in Alaska Native communities, were superb, as were the speakers and experiences they engaged for us. (There are different group leaders for different trip dates, but my experience with Road Scholar makes me confident that others are excellent as well.) We saw and learned so much on this trip that we felt more like learners than tourists. Neither my husband nor I is particularly fond of cruises, but we enjoyed the sea as well as the land portion of this trip. Holland America provided good food and great service, and our cabin (the least expensive offered) was excellent. And, although the illustrated lectures on ship by our group leaders were the kind of "entertainment" that we appreciate, we also enjoyed two shows put on by the cruise line, including the Filipino staff's show, which was delightful. Alaska is stunning, and this trip is a great introduction to the state.

What a wonderful memory and a great way to celebrate our 40th anniversary. I heard God's voice in the calving glacier, I saw His creativity everywhere, especially seeing Denali's peak, (and whales, spawning salmon, wildlife - to name just a few) & I felt His presence & answered prayers daily.
Alaska - a wonder to behold. And I did!

This is a great program. I now know so much more about Alaska and can appreciate this great state; this is coming from a Texan.

Jane from Saint Louis, MO Number of programs attended: 3

This is the only way to really see Alaska. The trip was very educational and the trip leaders were excellent; I learned a lot about Alaska's geology, history, culture and wildlife. I was hoping to have more hiking and to see more wildlife than we did.

Kathleen from Maineville, OH Number of programs attended: 13
Date attended: 07/08/13 - 07/21/13
It was the whole Alaska experience. Traveling by catamaran, bus, train, ship and foot. Seeing mountains, glaciers, animals, birds. Experience 24 hour days. We only missed the Northern Lights!

Mary from Taylor, MI Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 05/27/13 - 06/09/13
What an enjoyable and informative 2 week adventure! I had a great time with wonderful leaders and participants. It was a good way to experience the interior and southeast Alaska with informative and organized leaders who made the trip a real vacation. No dealing with organizing excursions people, or trying to coordinate extra activities; it was all done for me and it came off without a hitch. I was able to sit back and follow the well organized and well thought out list of activities that I really enjoyed , with others that seemed to enjoy it as much as I did. I am so glad I took the plunge and had my first great Road Scholar experience.
