ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

We completely enjoyed the program Tanzania and the Great Migration. There was outstanding leadership by the program guide; the wildlife viewing and photo opportunities exceeded our greatest expectations. The cultural interaction with the Tanzanian people, especially with the Maasai, was a highlight of the trip. The experience at Olduvai Gorge could almost be described as religious. We count this as the best of our 4 excellent trips with Road Scholar. This fulfilled lifelong dreams for us both.

This trip exceeded all my expectations. Exceptional tour leader, Lucas, and guides, Severin and Moses, interesting and friendly fellow participants. I was thrilled to see the animals and loved Tanzania.

What a fantastic trip! Lucas was like a magician when it came to finding the animals and encounters we were looking for. What a treat to watch a pride of lions devouring their kill. Then when their appetites were sated, 6 of them proceeded to park themselves under one of our safari vehicles. This trip was truly amazing!

The Tanzania safari was a dream come true. Superlatives don't do the country, the people, the animals, and the overall experience justice. Leave your preconceptions behind and open yourself to this wonderful country and all that it has to offer. Pack light, forget the excesses of civilization such as makeup and electric gadgets, and prepare to be amazed! One warning. The dusty, rutted dirt roads that traverse the parks keep them unspoiled but could be difficult for those who have major back or other physical challenges. And bring dust masks and plenty of moisturizer to correct the damage that can be done by the dryness. Take those precautions and go soon!!!

Imagine checking into your hotel room and realizing that there is a family of elephants or Cape Buffalo less than 100 yards away! Out in the Landcruisers, it seemed like every few minutes our expert guides, Lucas and Moses, found something new for us to see- lions and their cubs, posing zebras, giraffes, many groups of elephants, a couple of cheetahs, a leopard, a black rhino mom and baby, hippos, crocodiles, birds, many antelope species, hundreds of Thomson gazelles and endless lines of wildebeest walking (somewhere) and much more. Words cannot describe how amazing it was to watching sleeping lions several feet away. I felt so sad when it was time to leave all of this, including our guides and fellow travelers. We really bonded throughout this awesome trip. Most of the accommodations are actually in the national parks. Camping has never been like this- huge tents with electric lights, beds, showers, flush toilets, gracious hosts and even a very quiet Massai warrior who gently knocks on you door (or maybe your tent zipper) making a wake up call. Even though it is expected that wildlife will be close by or even walk through the camps (and they did), it felt safe in our tents. Bring your flashlights and head lamps and possibly some earplugs, as it is very dark and the wind can be really noisy at night. You will find it helpful to be flexible, to have a sense of humor and to be able to wake up early and raring to go! Your reward will be a profoundly moving and life-changing experience.

Amazing program, as many reviewers have noted. An interesting side note: many participants in our group - myself included - were recovering from a significant loss (death of a spouse, death of a parent, divorce). It seems not accidental that we chose this particular program, immersing ourselves in a place teeming with life and replete with death, an inescapable affirmation of interdependence and the circle of life. Even though our personal losses were in no way the focus of our conversations, there was something profoundly healing about the trip. Whatever your personal circumstance, it would be impossible to take this trip and not be utterly moved.

Not so educational in a "book-learning" sense, but deeply moving and perspective-enlarging, as Africa most probably should be on first experience.

I just came back from the Great Eastern Migration in Tanzania. It was the most incredible experience of my life!!!!!! Our guide was the best you could ask for. All the accommodations were better than I had anticipated and the staff at the places we stayed were so friendly and they couldn't do enough for you. Food was really good and I enjoyed trying new things. The game drives were incredible. I learned so much. I would and am recommending this trip to everyone I know. The group was small and we really connected. I still on "cloud 9". Diana

My wife and I just returned from the Feb 3-15 trip. We had a wonderful time and we highly recommend it. Lucas and his guide-drivers did a super job of locating birds and mammals and we really enjoyed their knowledge and company. AMAZING sightings - it far exceeded a similar trip I took in 1980 to the same areas. The schedule is well planned out and I could not think of anything to improve on it. This trip emphasized wildlife but also had cultural activities.

My wife and I went on this trip to see animals in the wild. We did not expect to see as many animals as close as we did. After a couple of days we wouldn't stop for giraffes or elephants as we had seen so many. As it was we'd spend 6-8 hours a day in the Landcruisers and it seemed like we would never go more than 10-15 minutes without stopping to see something too interesting to pass. Visiting a local school, a large town and a Maasai village was a big bonus. Our guide, Lucas and his two drivers Moses and Gerard were all extremely knowledgeable and charming. Every day we would move forward one row of seats until we rotated to the rear seat in the other vehicle. It was a good system. All the accommodations and meals were first class. I would definitely recommend this trip to a friend.

The "Great Migration" was a sight to behold. Led by Lucas and his two guides, Moses and Gerald, this was an experience that I will never forget. The knowledge and professionalism that they exhibited while making each of us feel very comfortable, was exceptional. The accommodations and food were excellent. And what we learned, saw and experienced were unmatched.

If you want to experience the "trip of a lifetime" consider this adventure. I will NEVER look at African wildlife with the same eyes again. Our tour guide, Lucas, and his drivers, Moses and Gerald, were extremely knowledgeable, articulate, generous of spirit and patient. We feel blessed to have had this opportunity to learn so much about the peoples, animals, and culture of this amazing part of the world.

It was wonderful. We saw every animal and bird imaginable, but the thing that I loved the most is that I never felt like a tourist. Our guides introduced us to many local people and we felt very accepted. That was very special to me.

I have just returned from my second trip to Tanzania, the first with Road Scholar. The experience far exceeded my expectations. I thought I knew what to expect but it was even more. Our guide, Lucas, was fabulous, taking care of all travel details, emergencies and providing educational information as well. The drivers were remarkable---finding the animals and understanding animal behaviors. They were charming, kind and wonderful instructors as well as incredible drivers over some pretty rough roads. The group, Lucas and the guides,Eddy,Salim and Issaya, made the trip a 10 star experience. I am ready to return.

This program was a "10"! An abundance of animals to be seen at the right time of year at wonderful locations with excellant guides and staff. The food was healthy and plentiful and the accomodations were clean, comfortable and attractive. I had hoped for and expected a good trip, but this trip far exceeded all expectations. It was comfortable, safe, educational and exciting. Road Scholar is fantasic and provides everything it promises - and more - at an afforable price. I'm now a fan!

Far and away the best trip we've ever had. Lucas and his colleagues Emmanuel and Eddie were more than excellent guides; they were truly invested in conservation and preservation of nature's wonders. The accommodations were comfortable, the food excellent, and every game drive was an exciting adventure. We couldn't be happier with this trip. It was planned perfectly, right down to the last detail. Truly an amazing experience and the trip of a lifetime.
