This program provided a well-organized and well-thought-out exposure to a beautiful part of the Balkans, an area in whose complex history and politics I have always been interested. There was a great balance between scenery and history--the towns and islands we visited were lovely and fascinating, and the excellent local guides provided unusual color to their historical descriptions. Accommodations on land and on the boat were very comfortable, and the group was extremely congenial (so far Road Scholar is batting 1000 on that score).

Hamilton from Austin, TX Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 09/17/15 - 09/29/15
This program was as good as the best of my four previous Road Scholar trips. The group leader is outstanding, the Dalmatian coast is enchanting, and the accommodations, both afloat and ashore, are excellent. What a treat to explore beautiful islands and medieval limestone towns built for people, not cars!

You can swim in one of the seven seas, enjoy life on a luxury yacht, have fine healthy cuisine and learn a lot about Croatia. Extend your visit on either end to see more inland and north than the coastal islands. First of the season was best for weather. You will not be troubled by language if you learn to say Good morning, Please and Thank You in Croatian. You will love the energy of the people living there.

We had an amazing adventure on our trip to Montenegro and Croatia. We enjoyed incredible sights, interesting lectures, wonderful local guides/tours and excellent sea food. Our traveling companions were fun, interesting and engaging. We miss the dinner conversations aboard the good ship MS Vita. We loved being on the ship. It was comfortable, excellent crew, and a great way to enjoy the beautiful country and some of its many islands. Our hotel accommodations were also good. Our guide, Luci, was incredible. She was knowledgeable, attentive, and patient. She was a gift! The trip went like clock work thanks to Luci’s oversight and attention to detail. In addition, we would also recommend the trip extension to Croatia’s capital and the Lakes. We had a wonderful hike through the Lakes - truly a wonder of the world!

The Croatia trip was amazing! The MS VITA is a new ship (only one year old) and was delightful--the ship itself, the crew, and the chef. I did not want to leave the ship a the end of our cruise, and the other participants seem to feel the same way. I would have stayed and done the cruise again in reverse! Luci, our group leader, was awesome. The other participants were great. Honestly, I cannot say enough about my whole experience! Definitely 5 of 5 stars!!!

The time spent on and in the Adriatic Sea and along the pristine wild Dalmatian coastline provided perfect relaxation, giving a rest from the sights and details of the historic towns. A wonderful group of people and an absolutely charming and effective tour leader, Spomenka Radic.

Phyllis from Fort Myers, FL Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 05/21/15 - 06/02/15
I not only learned about an area of the world which up until then had been a mystery to me, but was entranced by the physical beauty of the Dalmatian coast. This was a completely satisfying experience.

Fabulous trip. Mirela guide was the best. New ship = great cabin, Great chef on board. Recommend this delightful trip highly.

Nancy from New York, NY Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 05/27/15 - 06/08/15
Wow! I never imagined that a group tour could be so terrific--informative, friendly, warm, active. The food was well prepared and delicious, on shore and on the boat. Solicitous staff all around. Our tour guide, Luci, was outstanding and all guest lecturers were quite good. Local guides were uniformly excellent. The activity level was as described by Road Scholar, but modified for those who couldn't do some of the hiking and walking. An excellent trip all around. Travelling by yacht was by far the best way to visit the exquisite islands of Croatia.

Louise from Brookline, MA Number of programs attended: 2

The best of Croatia was a trip that exceeded my expectations. The boat Ms Vita, was new, clean and comfortable. The staff excellent. Our guide Luci was exceptional. She was engaging, energetic, and easily shared her knowledge and passion for her country, enhancing our learning about a complicated region.Constant sun and blue skies, dreamy mountain scenery along the Adriatic, swimming off the boat, visiting and learning about picturesque ancient historical towns, opportunties to be as active as one wanted with leisure time to explore on ones own, made for a relaxing and exceedingly educational vacation.

A great combination of ancient history, recent history, current events, and delightful tours and free-time wandering of old walled cities, all made easily accessible by a smooth cruise aboard a small ship with an outstanding personable crew.

Charles from Seattle, WA Number of programs attended: 8

Some critical comments have been made about the hotel in Split. Road Scholar obviously paid attention to this and changed the hotel. We stayed at the Cornaro Hotel, and it was excellent in all regards. Also there were questions about wine on the boat. On the Vita, there was wine and beer (one glass) at lunch and dinner. This was a great program in all regards.

Terry from Ferguson, MO Number of programs attended: 3

We have been on quite a few trips over the years and this one was one of the very best! Our guide, Mirela, was absolutely outstanding. Croatia is a beautiful country, well worth visiting more that once and the people there were very friendly and helpful. The itinerary was a perfect blend of educational activities, historical and cultural opportunities and beautiful sights. My wife and I enjoyed our time on the ship, the Futura (great staff and food) very much and the hotel accommodations were top notch. The people in our group were friendly and interesting and on time every time. We both loved this trip and intend to tell out friends to go to Croatia.

Likes= scenery, guide [Allen], lectures, field trips, history, Yacht, people on board, meals, Croatia, just about EVERYTHING. Didn't like Monte Negro, small room in Zagreb. Overall this trip was as good as it could get. 5 stars for me.

The trip to Croatia was one of the best i have taken, with Road Scholar and with other travel organizations. What made it so is learning about a country still being discovered and its splendid scenery and history.

Roberta from Mountainside, NJ Number of programs attended: 1

The Best of Croatia was an outstanding trip! Could not have asked for better weather either. Our guide, Petra was superb! Fun, knowledgeable, and approachable. Our yacht, My Futura was only a year old - the cabins beautiful. The food on board was great too. Only complaint would be the hotel in Montenegro but not many other choices so can't fault Road Scholar for that. Memorable vacation with lots of fun travel companions during the trip.

Visit a country that we heard so much about around 20 years ago, but many hadn't thought of as a travel destination - Croatia. Specifically coastal Croatia, via comfortable yacht for a week, with a hotel stay at either end of the itinerary. Great group leader, diverse and informative local guides, beautiful countryside, old world towns and fortifications, friendly residents who truly welcome visitors. Clean, modern, fresh foods from local farms. Be prepared to walk stone streets and steps, bring clothes for warmer or cooler than expected, be impressed!

The itinerary is wonderful: traveling by boat on the clear clean Adriatic Sea, sub-tropical climate and vegetation, as well as beautiful ancient ports and cities with interesting history. Our boat Futura was a real treat, and the crew members were excellent and very congenial.

Elaine from Los Angeles, CA Number of programs attended: 1

We loved our Croatia cruise -- our fellow travelers were interesting and fun, the boat was lovely and the food wonderful. And our guide was a gem - warm and welcoming, highly educated, and an experienced world traveler; she brought to life the history and culture her country and engaged us in each day's adventures. My main suggestion for improving the program would be to rethink the 2 days in Split at the Hotel President at the end of the trip. I'd much prefer staying on the ship!

Firstly, hello to Ann from Evanston, IL, below - hi dear roommate! I immediately recognized the photo above as I climbed up to the castle the night of the 2nd blood moon 10/8 and took this photo draped over the canon to capture the most glorious sunset awash with magical swirling indigo, burnt orange, fire red, melting into the Adriatic as twinkling lights danced below me on the island of Hvar! The islands of Hvar, Korchula, Trigor, Kotor are some of the magnificent brilliant jewels in Croatia's majestic crowning coastline. The Schooner BARBARA and her superb captain and crew were impeccably kind, professional, helpful, friendly as family and the schooner was immaculate, pristine, gorgeous, a very comfortable 5-star on the Sea! Our guide Alan from was full of accurate history, local useful info, kind and funny and caring - the best guide we highly recommend - who listened and communicated sincerely and astutely to my 91-yr-old full Croatian American-born father's questions and talks of being a little boy with his parents near Zagreb. We had fantastic guides everywhere we traveled. I have never seen a more beautiful country. The Adriatic is the cleanest water on the planet and 6 shades of indigo violet midnight aqua blue and I have never had so much fun diving into the sea, swimming like a mermaid with my wonderful fellow travelers on this cruise - we were blessed with very nice group of people - it was the trip of a lifetime for me and my elderly World War II parents. I cannot thank Road Scholar or guide Alan or dear beautiful Croatia enough and I HIGHLY recommend EVERYBODY to visit this gorgeous land and its loving people! Hvala puna!

Croatia and its coast is beautiful. It lives up to all its publicity. What more can one ask for, a lovely fish dinner by the side of a lake with a big full moon and warm not hot breezes with friends and nice red wine.

Wonderful Voyage! The other 25 Scholars were awesome, the Yacht MY Futura was beautiful and fun. The places we visited were very picturesque and interesting. All of our guides were very informative and pleasant. The water is beautiful though a tad cool for swimming, but still it was awesome. Highly recommend this trip and would love to do it again myself. I'd give it a 10 on a scale of 10.

If you have dreamed of sailing the Dalmatian coast in a sleek, beautiful yacht, this trip is for you. The "Futura" was an amazing vessel and was a head-turner in every port we visited. Our guide, Spomenka, was great! And too, the crew of the "Futura." Plus having congenial co-travelers made this a really special trip.

The Croatia trip was FAR beyond my expectations! It was my first Road Scholar excursion, and I intend to make many more. The value for the money cannot be beat, and the competence of our instructor was astounding. Very efficient use of time, well-balanced activities, in-depth experience. The trip was well planned and a great experience. The coastline is very beautiful and we had wonderful weather. Sunny days in a beautiful country with wonderful guides. This is a grand trip which I highly recommend. Our main suggestion for improvement would be to eliminate the last 2 nights in the Hotel President and to work the key events into a 9 night format and price accordingly.

Albert from Winston Salem, NC Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 05/22/14 - 06/03/14
The Croatia Dalmatia Coast sailing trip is a delight and wonderful learning experience as well. We had a marvelous leader, Alan, and excellent local guides. 11 sunny days also made the trip a wonder--the coast is so beautiful, absolute turquoise waters, beautiful towns with so much history, well-explained. We learned so much about the various periods, and have an understanding of the Yugoslavia period and break up with war. Another example of trying to impose the culture and reign of one group over another. The 2 home visits--to the family and to the priest for tour and lunch were truly highlights. The only major change we would suggest, as would many in our group, was the elimination of the last 2 days in a hotel in Split--it is an after the fact slow down after finishing the cruise and the tours--it was a good time to end the tour on the highest note of the wonderful farewell party on the sailboat--a little readjustment there is needed.

Joyce from Hyde Park, UT Number of programs attended: 2

The only way to see Croatia and its fabulous islands is from a small ship. The crew was uniformly helpful and nice. Split was an unanticipated highlight and actually trumped Dubrovnik as a living but antique city. Marela, our tour leader, provided exceptional leadership and educational guidance.

The Best of Croatia: A Coastal Voyage by Yacht met and exceeded expectations. Croatia is a beautiful country, that is not yet overrun by tourists. Our tour director Alen turned a potentially disappointing problem into a delightful unplanned day trip to Mostar, Bosnia. Uncharacteristic windy weather for May forced us to forgo Hvar and Stari Grad because it was unsafe for the yacht to dock at those ports. We instead spent two nights docked at Gradec on the mainland. Many of us agreed that the Bosnia trip was a treat and should be incorporated in future schedules.

Just completed our Croatia by Yacht tour (May 16th through 27th, 2014). The tour exceeded our expectations—did not know beforehand how beautiful Croatia was, now we would love to live there; had never done a small boat (yacht) tour before, now we loved the small group nature of the trip and the private, yet comfortable accommodations aboard the Barbara; our tour guide, Mirela, was outstanding—knowledgeable, personable and caring—we became good friends by the end; got to know all our fellow travelers well by the end of the tour and are happy to count each and every one of them a friend. Thank you Road Scholar! Marie and Ashley Shemain

If you want a tour which can be as leisurely or as intense as you like, this is the one for you. Seeing a country from the sea, much as the early explorers did, gives a unique insight into historical events and timelines. The excellent guided tours and lectures are well balanced with personal time for exploration and sampling of the local culture and cuisine. We learned a great deal about Croatia and other Balkan countries and now have a better understanding of both historical and recent events in the region. We look forward to taking another Road Scholar tour in the near future.

Many of the places I visited in 1967 (when I caught a ride to Dubrovnik from the youth hostel in Venice) are still there and spruced up. The war damage from the '90s is largely patched up. Our tour leader was very knowledgeable and quite willing to share her knowledge. And the yacht was beautiful! Do it!!

Croatia is a beautiful country with gorgeous scenery, wonderful food and warm, welcoming people. Enjoying it from the comfort of a private yacht, cruising along the scenic coast, made it even more relaxing. I learned so much about a place I formerly knew little, was so pleasantly surprised about the cleanliness, the beauty of each place we visited, swimming in the warm Adriatic at the end of October! Loved the ease of having everything taken care of by Road Scholar and our excellent group leader, Matija. Can't wait to go back to Croatia and can't wait to go on another Road Scholar program!

Croatia by Yacht was fantastic. I would HIGHLY recommend this adventure. Two major reasons for the success were the GREAT group leader, Matija Radic; and the captain and the crew of the Futura. Exploring the vast history and the cultures of the Dalmation Coast and its people was so educational. A photographer's dream. The trip exceeded all of my expectations.

Croatia can crow justly about the Adriatic jewels it has to offer along its island-dotted coast, and seeing them from the M/S Barbara, the 41-meter yacht that is home during the week's sail from island to island, is just about the perfect way to go. Our only discomfort arose from the dicey weather that afflicted us off and on during the week and forced us into a safe harbor on an island that was originally not on our itinerary. But that island, Sipan, proved to be a hit precisely because it was not as touristed or developed the others we saw. That detour and the weather did not, however, deter us from making stops in all the towns and villages anticipated, from Split, to Trogir, to Hvar, to Korcula, to Mjlet National Park, each more fascinating than the last. And our final port of Dubrovnik lived up to its billing as the best saved for last. Even though we had to disembark in Dubrovnik, our adventuring was not at an end since we continued on for another two days overland by bus to Montenegro where we had a fabulous seaside resort, and got to visit the UNESCO protected Kotor medieval city. This is one Adventure Abroad that definitely merits its hype!

This is a wonderful program. The Futura, our yacht, was spacious and comfortable, the food first rate, the tours at each of our stops educational and fun. Our tour guide, Matai, was most knowledgeable and we all enjoyed his lectures. We were fortunate in having ideal weather - sunshine and seventies, and several times we had the opportunity to swim in the Adriatic Sea. The Dalmatian Coast is just beautiful.
