Newfoundland Coast to Coast was a wonderful trip, especially if you like small colorful fishing villages, interesting history different from much of North America and a very interesting geology. Until very recently it was an independent country, and only recently has it been well connected by paved roads. You'll enjoy its national parks and its people.

A part of the world that I had not thought of before or had any knowledge of. Thanks for widening my horizon. I had heard so many versions of the word New Foundland and thanks to Jean I know the correct way to pronounce it!!!!!!

Great beauty and natural and cultural variety one could hardly find on one's own. It's a very big island and this is a no-stress say to reach far-flung delights. Lots of great sites beyond the obvious. Superb guide.

There is a lot of travel by motor coach but if you want to see as much of Newfoundland and as many sites as we did you'll understand why. It is a coast to coast experience that was very informational and enjoyable.

Vikings, puffins, cod, whales, icebergs and woodpiles-you have to go to understand the importance of each And we reached the point where the sun comes up first in North America--a multi-year longing! We have been on ELEVEN Road Scholar/Elderhostel trips. Jean Knowles, our VERY KNOWLEDGEABLE leader for our */7/2015-9/19/2015 edition was truly EXCEPTIONAL. (See Carmela's comments below.)

Carmela and Stu Chase from Seven Lakes, North Carolina Number of programs attended: 2 Date attended: 08/07/15-08/19/15 This was one of the best trips we have ever taken! Jean Knowles was a gem. Her insight and knowledge of the area and the people was truly inspiring. The humor of Jean and our driver Ron added to the great fun we had. Newfoundland is such a beautiful place and the people are just wonderful. We were very touched by the people of Port Union, who gave us their hearts with their wonderful food, music, and warmth. We enjoyed all of our fellow travelers and thank them for their company. This program will be hard to match.

Newfoundland had been on my " Bucket List" for years. Participation in this program fulfilled all my expectations. Loved it, the country, and all the people we encountered, both the leader, Jean Knowles, and all the other participants as well as the wonderful Newfoundlers.

Newfoundland with Jean Knowles as guide was one of the best Road Scholar trips we've taken. With incredible knowledge and insight, Jean made the country, the culture, the geography, and the people come alive for us. The highlight: the whales!

Outstanding program. Puffins and whales were terrific. Jean Knowles, our guide, was excellent. Coldest July in 20 years did not dim my enjoyment at all.

This is a very varied and good program. I learned about lots of history and the natural world that I was not aware of before. We had a wonderful experience at the Elliston puffin site, seeing and photographing the birds up really close. Take a really warm coat, hat and gloves for the boat trips. Quite a lot of time is spent on the bus, but there is no way to get around this as the program covers so many different parts of NFL. Jean Knowles is a good leader. She is very organized and knows the ground the program covers extremely well.

This spectacular trip included abundant water, boat trips to see icebergs and beautiful mountains, a visit to the earth's mantle, and encounters with wildlife. From the Vikings to the collapse of the cod fishery, we learned history from some of the most delightful people who call Newfoundland home. Highly recommended!

If any or all of the following is of interest to you led by a professional and seasoned leader and superb local guides, this trip is for you: awe-inspiring fjords and icebergs, puffins and other seabirds, whales, assorted wildflowers, geology, history going back thousands of years, the arts including theatre and traditional music, interaction with locals who are open, warm and welcoming, breathtaking seascapes, landscapes and skyscapes, fishing villages tucked into myriad picturesque coves, varied lighthouses, Viking lore, beautiful handcrafted goods, regional museums and interpretive centers, a winery and a brewery thrown in for good measure, and lots of laughter and many touching moments. If you decide in the affirmative, you will truly capture the essence and soul of this unforgettable place. Marilyn, New York City

This was an excellent tour, with an excellent tour leader (Jean Knowles). There were 29 participants. The itinerary provided good exposure to the people, places, history, music, art and food of Newfoundland. The scenery was often spectacular -- especially our amazing iceberg encounter during the whale-watching expedition off St. Anthony. The tour added much nuanced understanding of this Province's past history, and the complex situations it faces in the early 21st century. The tour group was very congenial. A most interesting and fun time was had by all!

My husband (who is about to go to his 247th Elderhostel!)and I can't recommend this program highly enough. Newfoundland is one of our favorite Canadian provinces, and if you don't know it already, put it on your bucket list! This was our third visit, and yet we experienced much that was new for us. Jean Knowles is an outstanding leader in every way (one of our favorites!), and we're already looking forward to taking the cruise she's leading next year on the St. Lawrence River.

Along with agreeing with all the other reviews, I'd like to add the 1-2 punch of our guide, Jean, and driver, Harold, and the opportunity to meet the kind, generous, gracious people of Newfoundland.

Newfoundland has the most invigorating air in late August - crisp and clean! It makes you glad to be alive and enjoying its treasures - like puffins, whales, moose, caribou, fish (salmon and cod) amazing landscapes and the people, some of the kindest and most welcoming you will find anywhere. The tour is amazingly well run and organized - encompassing so many aspects of life on the island, from the fishing industry, to the culture, to the history from primitive times to the present, to the life of the cod.... Highly recommended.

Knowledgeable and informative guide, excellent coach driver, nice accommodations, wonderful food, interesting museums, tours, side trips, and activities, great scenery, photogenic puffins and moose, overall a wonderful program. I'm glad I went.

I endorse Linda's and Sally's reviews of our recent tour. This tour deserves to be a "bucket list" item. Jean and Harold are wonderful. I will add praise for the rocks. Newfoundland has some of the oldest geologic features in the world and fossils to go with them. A moving experience near the end of the trip had us walking along bare seashore rocks looking closely to see fossils and tiny plants and sea creatures -- enhancing appreciation for them and capping appreciation for the hardy and resourceful people and environment.

This program immersed me in what Newfoundland is about: the people, the culture, the history, the scenic beauty, wildlife, and geological significance. I have an inquiring mind and like to be involved in continuing adventures throughout the entire day. This program provided those adventures. It had a great mix of group time and spare time (which was minimal but perfect because it allowed me and others I met on the trip to take some evening coastal walks around towns we stayed in). Jean, our leader, was extremely knowledgeable about many subjects, well organized, and a personable leader. Our bus driver, Harold, was meticulous in cleaning our bus daily and graciously highlighted our route on maps to take home. The places we visited were all worth seeing. Both plays we saw were excellent dramas much in the Irish tradition and real treats. The 3 boat trips gave us diverse experiences. I would recommend that future participants spend 2 to 3 days prior to the trip in St. John's and visit the Johnson GeoCenter, Coastal Railroad Museum, and walk around Quidi Vidi Lake. They are not part of the program but should not be missed.

Fantastic tour! I highly recommend it if you are interested in wild life, history and geology. There are very knowledgeable guides and spectacular sightings: breaching humpbacks, close encounters with puffins, icebergs, rugged coastlines and much more.

A great program. I wanted to see puffins, L'Anse aux Meadows, and get some cool weather in the summer. What I got was a whole lot more: including fantastic scenery, great local food and entertainment, and a tour guide who was full of knowledge, personable, and had a good sense of humor. The icebergs were a wonderful bonus!

More new and interesting experiences packed into a short time period than I have experienced before. The skills and enthusiasm of leader Jean Knowles made this a most enjoyable trip.

This was our first Road Scholar trip. My husband wanted to see puffins; I wanted to see icebergs. We both got our wishes, plus whales, moose, eagles and an arctic fox! The rugged terrain is absolutely gorgeous. The most impressive experience was the interaction with the locals. What wonderful people! Makes you want to be a better person. The topping on the cake was the tour group and the tour guide, Jean Knowles. Everyone was up for anything. No complaints; just smiles. What's not to smile about?

In addition to the other positive posts, the respect the Newfoundland communities' had for Jean Knowles and Road Scholar made some very positive events happen on our tour. Doors were open that weren't always planned. Jean catered to the individual as well as the entire group. This was a very enjoyable educational trip. I would definitely travel with Road Scholar again.

This is a wonderful program. Jean Knowles, the tour leader was the reason for it's success. She has a great peronality and sense of humor. The icebergs on this particular tour were unbelievable - even the locals were coming out to see them there so many. The ability to interact with the local people was a real positive part of the program. They are really nice, "down-to-earth" folks. The sites themselves are like ones most people have never seen. You will love it.

A wonderful introduction to Newfoundland and her people. Scenery, history, people, animals, and birds. It's all part of the experience that makes this trip memorable. It is obvious leader Jean Knowles has a strong love for Newfoundland which was imparted at every turn. Prepare yourself for a journey of discovery.
