The Canyon De Chelly program, offered the opportunity to learn about ancient Pueblo inhabitants, the Navajo Long Walk of 1864, Kit Carson’s role & the return of the Navajo to their sacred lands. The lectures were reinforced by field trips to both the N & S canyon rims & fortified with a 4 wheel excursion into the Canyon floor. The guided tours led by coordinator Azalia Lewis of the canyon's S Rim with stops at overlooks of Spider Rock, Face Rock and White House, coupled with a tour of N Rim overlooks at Massacre & Mummy Caves & views of the Canyon Del Muerto was the perfect setup for our venture onto the Canyon Floor 1,000 feet below the Rim. The trip onto the Canyon Floor was aboard a 4-W drive SUV operated by certified Navajo guides. The route follows the dry washes on the Canyon Floor. We 4-wheeled into Canyon de Chelly and Canyon del Muerto ruins beneath towering sandstone cliffs and canyon walls, within view of ancient ruins & petroglyphs. The view from the Canyon Floor to the Rim was dramatic. The program wrapped up on the final night with a performance by William Yazzie who shared his passion for Navajo music, culture, & dance. The performance was a combination of demonstration, levity and entertainment. This program gave us a rare vantage point and offered a learning platform via presentations on traditional Navajo weaving and patterns, a demonstration on Navajo pottery making & a Navajo silversmithing demonstration. The Holiday Inn was the perfect venue as it stands at the entrance to Canyon de Chelly National Monument. Azalia Lewis was an outstanding, knowledgeable coordinator & representative of the Navajo people. Our thanks go to Azalia, Northern Arizona University, and Road Scholar for an outstanding experience. The video I shot of William Yazzie's performance on our final night turned out quite well. I have compiled the video on a DVD disk that I would be happy to provide to program participants & coordinators at no cost upon request by e-mail.

This was a great program...a nice combination of physically exploring the canyon and lectures regarding Navajo culture, history and arts. I don't believe a visitor to this area who came outside the Road Scholar program could possibly have the depth of experience and information we were given.

What a wonderful, educational program in a unique area of the country! Azalia Begay has organized talented presenters with expertise in many areas who enriched our understanding of the Navajo life experience, present and past. Even if one is well-read in Navajo history and culture, meeting and getting to know Azalia and the environment and culture of the area in person is a life-changing opportunity. We were treated to honest discussion of wide-ranging topics, arts and crafts unfolding before our eyes, a beautiful canyon to explore, nice accommodations, staff and food. Azalia's personal motivation and care for each of us as well as her unique culture is remarkable and commendable. My husband and I highly recommend this program.
