Great hiking and learning experience about the biota and geology of the southwest mountain and desert region. The leaders were fantastic!

Hiking in the Superstition Wilderness was the best Road Scholar trip I've ever taken. Beautiful, interesting, challenging, educational. I may do it again. It's inspired me to pick up my training and "hit the trails.", It was like Outward Bound for the elderly and I'm eager to repeat the experience.

I have done a number of hiking programs and this was the first one that actually lived up to its rating as challenging. If you like the southwest and hiking you will really enjoy this program

This was a wonderful week of hiking. We covered a lot of ground: each hike except the last was 11 - 14 km. I appreciated the way Mike switched up the hikes to take advantage of the weather conditions. Read Eileen's blog which gives an excellent overview of the hikes we did. Mike Young was a wealth of information about the plants and landforms we came across. One of the comments below mentioned the rustic nature of the Apache Lake Resort. We found the staff very friendly and the food plentiful and well prepared. If you consider that to see similar country you would have to backpack, sleep in a bivy and eat freeze dried food, Apache Lake was HEAVEN.

Another excellent hiking program that definitely lives up to its "challenging" designation. Beautiful hikes, amazing scenery, and great hiking companions. Plus Mike and Michael are the best possible leaders -- positive, encouraging, knowledgeable, with a good sense of humor. I have added my blog of the trip, with comments and pictures, at Please email me at if you have comments or questions.

I really enjoyed this program and I recommend it strongly. The program's leader, Mike Young, is outstanding. The accommodations at Apache Lake are dated, but the room AC/heat was new in the room I had. The staff were very welcoming and helpful. Besides, there really is no other place to stay!
