ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

This is a great way to get an introduction to the beauty and grandeur of these awesome works of nature. The pace was just right, and the leaders did a wonderful job. They were full of great information, and always there to answer our questions.

I encourage anyone to hand herself over to the informed, considerate staff/team at Road Scholar - based on my experience of the Canyons tour, am eager to sign up for another - abroad maybe.

Robert from Putnam, CT Number of programs attended: 1

My husband and I just completed the trip Color Country sponsored by NAU. It was terrific in every aspect. These folks have covered every possible contingency and provide a wonderful, educational, friendly, delicious week filled with time spent exploring the western canyons and deserts. We can't wait to go on our next Road Scholar program.

Robert from San Jose, CA Number of programs attended: 2

This program provides the attendee with access to and explanations of three of the real "all stars" among all the U.S. national parks.

Patrick from Manhattan Beach, CA Number of programs attended: 1

Program # 11573 to Zion, Bryce and the Grand Canyon was absolutely fabulous. The scenery was amazing and the education was terrific. We would highly recommend this program. Pat & DeAnne

A perfect way to see three of the most beautiful places on earth. I can't imagine anyone on this trip being disappointed.

Ray from Cleveland, OH Number of programs attended: 7
Date attended: 09/30/14 - 10/07/14
Overall excellent program and as advertised "up to two miles hiking per day." And two miles was the max. In order to do more, I had to proactively seek my own hikes, which staff then supported.

Sandy from Los Gatos, CA Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 09/07/14 - 09/14/14
What a thrill to visit three National Parks my husband and I had never seen! We enjoyed Zion National Park, Bryce National Park, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It seemed to us that it was just the right mix of learning and hiking.

Steve from Columbia, MD Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 09/07/14 - 09/14/14
The Color Country trip to Bryce, Zion, and Grand Canyon is a fantastic experience--seeing photos is not the same as being in the parks and having experienced guides help interpret what you see and it's context! Go of it at whatever level your want--a very flexible trip for all levels.

William from Forest, VA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/07/14 - 09/14/14
11573(Colour Country) was a fantastic tour!!! Anyone wishing to see and learn about these three(Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon) National Parks should put this tour in their "bucket list"!!!

John from Jefferson, OH Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 09/07/14 - 09/14/14
Our program at Zion, Bryce and N. Rim of Grand Canyon was a great experience as have the previous 4 programs we have attended. This program was led by two persons who were knowledgeable, well organized and communicated well with the group. The sights were magnificent. I recommend it.

George from Des Peres, MO Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 09/07/14 - 09/14/14
Zion, Bryce and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon were sensational and made this the trip of of a lifetime for me. David and Mary Best were exceptional leaders and were the icing on the cake for us. I hope to have them as leaders for future trips.

Nancy from Warrenville, IL Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/07/14 - 09/14/14
Our first experience with Road Scholar and our guides provided vast information and a great sense of humor too. David and Mary Best were the best. Lots of information about Zion, Bryce and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon-all different rocks. The driving was difficult but done superbly by Ray. Great way to see the National Parks in Utah. A wonderful group of travelers willing and able to adhere to the schedule and/or change of schedule due to the flash flood in Zion. Accommodations and meals were also a great surprise to the good.

Phyllis from Carlsbad, CA Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 09/07/14 - 09/14/14
David and Mary Best WERE the best! They were excellent leaders and fortunately, this group of 40 was cohesive and followed orders. The scenery was outstanding and David always chimed in with useful information about the geology of the area. Also Forest Rangers gave some talks and were also informative. The sights were remarkable and it was a once in a lifetime experience for those of us who have never visited Bryce, Zion and the north rim.

Mary from Jefferson, OH Number of programs attended: 5
Date attended: 09/07/14 - 09/14/14
We recently went on the color countries program to Zion, Bryce & north rim of the Grand Canyon. We experienced a "once in a lifetime" flash flood in Zion (no problems, but interesting to see!) It was a wonderful trip, however, I would mention that the hikes are a bit more strenuous to those of us used to "walking up to 2 miles a day" on level ground & at a lower elevation. Any walking at 8000-9000' was strenuous to some of us!

phyllis from Chatham, NJ Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 08/21/14 - 08/28/14
Wonderful learning adventure. Jeff and Joanna taught us about the geology of what we were seeing. Ray kept us safe with his driving and shared his life experiences with us. We enjoyed the company of all who journied with us. Can't wait to go on our next trip. Road Scholar rocks!! Get it?

Ann from Fairfield, OH Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 08/21/14 - 08/28/14
An outstanding program. Jeff and Joanna were excellent and knowledgeable coordinators for our adventures in Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. A wonderful experience especially since the lodgings were in the parks so the vistas were only footsteps away. Hope to catch a few more Northern Arizona University Road Scholar programs in the future.

John from Atlanta, GA Number of programs attended: 2

Color Country National Parks was a gem! AS with previous Road Scholar programs, the guides were knowledgeable and the company erudite and engaged. The irony of starting in Las Vegas--the "anti-national park"--was not lost on me. And the night skies---superb! Bravo, Road Scholar and NAU.

Joseph from Louisville, KY Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 08/21/14 - 08/28/14
This is a great experience for people of all ages. The ability to see -- and stay in -- three national parks -- is fantastic. The trip was well organized and well executed. And our new friends are pretty great too! Strongly recommend.

We took our Road Scholar Program (#11573) in August. Although hot outside, the bus ride to Zion, Grand Canyon North Rim and Bryce Canyon was very comfortable. The Coordinators provided excellent educational narratives and handouts which prepared us for the beautiful sights, hikes and programs that we experienced at each of the parks. Staying in the Park Lodges was a great benefit, allowing us to get the full advantage of each Park. If you have not visited these parks with their unbelievable scenery, you should not miss this Road Scholar program.

John from Silver Spring, MD Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 08/21/14 - 08/28/14
This program is excellent. You get to see 3 of the most beautiful and astounding parks, while learning about their geology, natural history, and history. They cheerfully accommodated multiple levels of activity up to strenuous.

Susan from Hartford, WI Number of programs attended: 8
Date attended: 08/12/14 - 08/19/14
This program visiting Zion, Bryce, and North Rim of the Grand Canyon National Parks was spectacular due in part to the gorgeous scenery, but also due to our instructor, Darrell! I would recommend this program to anyone interested in the natural world and the beauty of our National Parks. The hiking was not difficult, the vistas, however, were incredible!

William from Staunton, IL Number of programs attended: 10

Hiking in three awesome, different national parks with a top-notch guide: unforgettable.

What a wonderful trip! Jeff, Jennifer and Ray did such a wonderful job of sharing their love of these National Parks and the Lodges. Information was provided to us with wonderful handouts, oral presentations, readings from favorite writers and personal experiences from Jeff and Jennifer. The Lodging was wonderful, the food outstanding and all the members of the tour had the chance to get know each other at meals, hikes, picnics and free time. Jeff and Jennifer ran this program smoothly and were very good at quickly making changes in the program if necessary for all our comfort. They do their job so well and it runs so smoothly that it made for a very stress free adventure. I look forward to taking another Road Scholar program with Jeff, Jennifer and Ray. I have been raving about this wonderful program to all my friends and certainly hope others reading these reviews will take advantage of this great program.

Eileen from East Hampton, NY Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 06/08/14 - 06/15/14
I agree wholeheartedly with all that Val has said about our trip. The arrangements, the attention to details for each aspect of the trip were admirable. It made our trip so enjoyable and we were able to get to know each other on the bus, on the trails, in the dining rooms at the lodges, at the picnic tables. I'm still re-living the experience. Thank you, Jeff and Jen, for all your hard work and caring; Ray, you too are to be commended. I would travel again with Road Scholar -- no hesitation! Best regards to my tour mates who read this.

Vladimir from Harrisburg, PA Number of programs attended: 1

This Northern Arizona University trip could not have been more perfect! The detailed trip information before we booked, the pre-trip information packet, the meals, accommodations, the day to day flawless travel execution, the group leaders - everything was great. Jeff and Jennifer provided lots of interesting information during our travel between and in the parks. Staying inside the parks and enjoying meals at the lodges could not be beaten. Picnic lunches made the maximum use of time to see the parks. Plenty of opportunities for independent exploration if desired. In the evenings, when day visitors left the parks, the parks were our own.

This program exceeded our expectations...wonderful leaders, amazing parks, great schedule, interesting presentation of educational material. Jeff and Jennifer were inclusive, warm, organized, knowledgable, and fun! The parks were more beautiful that words and pictures do justice. Ray kept us safe on the road and provided interesting insights of his own. Being housed in the National Parks added an extra benefit and contributed to the convenience and accessibility to trails, lodge, etc.

David from Chapel Hill, NC Number of programs attended: 11

The Color Canyons program was exciting and challenging. Our leaders could not have been better. We saw three beautiful and amazing national parks and had the opportunity to see Las Vegas and see a show and have a fabulous dinner (on our own).

Philip from Pasadena, CA Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 05/12/14 - 05/19/14
This was a great program. The natural scenery could not be beat and the time at each was perfect (2 days Zion, 2 days Bryce, 2 days North Rim). The leaders (Nancy and Keith) were both excellent. The weather was perfect. The accommodations and food were excellent. The other participants were fun, interesting, friendly and easy going (even in spite of a bus breakdown and a plugged sewer line, both of which were remedied quickly and efficiently). Nobody complained, everyone kept up, everyone was on time all the time (even with 37 people).

Carol from Flower Mound, TX Number of programs attended: 6

This program is a walk through geologic time; each national park is a different time period and makes understanding the time and action involved a bit easier.

Bob from Flower Mound, TX Number of programs attended: 6

A fabulous area of the country. Beautiful and awe inspiring. You must see it to truly appreciate it, photos don't do it justice.

Maureen from Coralville, IA Number of programs attended: 1

This is an awesome trip! It was our first Road Scholar trip, but will not be our last. Our tour guides, Stan and Mary Jane, were extremely knowledgable and organized and our driver, Lonnie, knew the roads and how to drive that bus in all weather (I think we had every type of weather possible except a tornado!). The only negative was the Las Vegas hotel, thank heaven we didn't have to stay there the whole trip. Kudos to Road Scholar, Stan, Mary Jane and Lonnie for a wonderful 7 days!

Great combination of parks. The instructors were well organized, subject matter experts as well as thoroughly entertaining. The selection of hikes and the educational components definitely enhanced the national park experience. Took hundreds of photos because every day offered breath taking views.

Fabulous trip. Great team of leaders. Participants interested in learning and in meeting each other. Places we visited were incredibly beautiful and the weather was nearly perfect. All in all... a wonderful experience. We are now looking forward to our first intergenerational Road Scholar trip to Williamsburg, VA with our granddaughter in June. Thank you for all that you do to create a marvelous travel adventure!

Judi from Kelowna, BC Number of programs attended: 1

What an awesome trip! Great content, very compatible and informed guides. Our group was taken care of very well even after our beautiful bus had a breakdown in the desert. Alternate arrangements went off seamlessly and with humor. Each canyon left us more impressed and each had their own beauty. We did experience a first impression disappointment with the first accommodation in Las Vegas. The hotel was not crowded by any means and we were given a one of the poorest choices of rooms. Upon request, we were moved to a better room so all was not list. Perhaps a better calibre of accommodation could be considered. The others were first class! Thanks to our remarkable coordinator, geologist and driver for a job well done. And to our fellow travellers - hope our paths cross again.

We had an exceptional trip considering the absence of touring the actual parks. Our group could not have been better. They were all so upbeat it was a pleasure to be with them despite some adverse turns of event (rockslide ahead on the trail, to name one). Road Scholar did a fantastic job giving us alternatives and Crazy Jug Point at Grand Canyon may have been the best view ever. I just signed up for a Costa Rica adventure on 3/10 because it sounds like a fun trip AND there is a canopy zip line tour. Can't beat that!

Heather from Nanaimo, BC Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 10/01/13 - 10/08/13
We just completed the program in the absence of the national parks. Despite this we were treated to stunning scenery, bar none. We even got to see the North Rim of the Grand Canyon - no one there but our group. The program providers were excellent in providing stunning options at the last minute under difficult circumstances. All the participants were lovely, interesting people. Hats off to Roads Scholar for putting together a stellar "Plan B" for us.

Lisa from Novato, CA Number of programs attended: 0

We just got back from the "No Nat'l Parks" trip to almost Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyons. Our experience was absolutely wonder-filled, adventurous and fun. Road Scholar and the staff with us put together such a great alternative trip and took us to places as beautiful as the Parks. We got to overlook canyons the surely rival Zion and Bryce. We stood on the North Rim of the Grand Canyon at Crazy Jug. We went to an excavated Anasazi village, Kodachrome Basin, and petrified trees. Some of us saw a California condor land close by, prong horn, and butterflies. Life gets good when we step out of the expected. Lisa Esty

Our leaders were very knowledgeable also enthusiastic. Accommodations, meals, transportation and timing of events were very good. There was enough leeway in event timing to allow some flexibility for individual pursuits. The group, though large (42), was friendly and got along well. The locations were of course superb and luckily we had very good weather. In conclusion, learned a lot and had a great time.

Mary from Georgetown, MA Number of programs attended: 1

My wife and I took our first Road Scholar experience visiting Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon North Rim NPs. This was also our first guided vacation experience and we came away very satisfied with the whole experience. If you are looking for adventures with educational benefits Road Scholar should be considered. We felt our adventure vacation was worth the money, was of the right length of time, and a very enjoyable experience. The staff was professional, easy to interact with and very friendly. We will head out on another adventure with Rod Scholar soon, check 'em out, it will be worth your while.

All in all highly recommended - you won't regret it.

Having just completed the Zion, Bryce, Grand Canyon trip organized by Northern Arizona University, I still feel awed by the experience. The 2 leaders, Jenn and Jeff were outstanding. They were extremely knowledgeable, organized, understanding of our diverse capabilities, smart and fun. They could not have been better in part because they have been involved in the overall planning of this trip for several years. We stayed in the National Park lodges giving us a more intimate appreciation of the environment. The accommodations were charming and the food was excellent. There is no way to describe the majesty of the scenery. The hikes and drives that we did enhanced the experience. The other participants were friendly, always on time, and very interesting. I have visited many parts of the world. This trip, thanks to Road Scholar, is at the top of my list of great places!

Loved seeing the parks with spectacular formations and appreciated the billions of years it took to form/change them. Also appreciated seeing the desert, pine forests and meadows and views of mountains and canyons as we traversed parts of Utah and AZ. So different from New England! This Road Scholar Program was a life-long dream of mine. I remember visiting the Grand Canyon probably 50+ years ago with my parents, and I had to go again when the program became available for my wife and myself. The instructors (Jeff and Joanna) complemented each other with their lively banter during the motor-coach trips between each Park. They both clearly explained how related, yet different, Zion and Bryce and the Grand Canyon Parks were to each other. I would recommend this trip to everyone.

One of the best programs I have attended. There was time to learn, explore on you own, and time to share learning with the group. Food better than expected and lodging just as good. The weather in late May was in the mid 80s and not a cloud during the trip. I would rate this program a 10.

This is an excellent program and a great chance to visit part of our National Parks system. Jeff and Johanna were both informative and enhanced my educational experience. Daily activities were fun, but the higher altitudes had to be taken into consideration for us sea level dwellers. I was glad the program park visits started low and ended high, gave me a good chance to adjust as we went along.

I chose this program, my first, Road Scholar tour, to see the National Parks. Zion, Bryce Canyon & north rim of Grand Canyon, and was able to do so more than superficially with two nights in each. The schedule, lodging and meals worked out really well and had some flexibility. I delight in learning about our earth and ecologies and did a lot of that on this Color Country tour. I was a solo traveler and was welcomed by fellow tourers and received friendly help from the three staff members. Am SO glad I was on this tour!

We truly enjoyed this program. We were impressed by how helpful and informative both Jeff and Joanna were during the entire trip. They certainly exhibited patience with the differing needs and desires of all the individuals in the group. Seeing the 3 national parks was fantastic. The pacing of moving from one park to the next park was just right. I would encourage anyone planning to participate in this program to bring hiking poles. We found them very useful on several of the hikes. And we bought bandanas at the first opportunity. They are multipurpose tool in the varying climates of the 3 parks--great for cooling if the weather is hot, or warming ears and necks if the weather is cool.

Bravo! I'm still "enjoying" the trip. The scenery, of course, was spectacular, the arrangements were well-organized in every way, and the people (both staff and participants) were lovely. What a great vacation!

Our Road Scholar trip to Zion, Bryce Canyon, and the Grand Canyon was just outstanding. The scenery, food, and accommodations were wonderful. We shared the adventure with 37 other fabulous people. The icing on the cake, however , were our guides and driver, Pat, Dan, and Dave. This trip was great, but may not have been as great without these warm, wonderful, and knowledgeable people- wonderful storys and humor as well. I hope we can do another trip with these fine people in the future.

Go for it!!! Prepare to be amazed at the beauty of this area. This was our second Road Scholar adventure and we are definitely going to do more. Pat, Dan and Dave did a wonderful job. We learned from them and also from the other participants. Well done.

This is a well planned, educational, and visually stunning trip. A collapsable walking stick, more than one small water bottle, a wide brim hat with tie strings, and good hiking shoes are real plusses for Zion, Bryce and the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

I took this as my first Road Scholar trip 10/09/12 to 10/16/12 and was very pleased, as you can see by the many pictures I posted to this site. It was well run and our leader, Bruce Banker, from Northern Arizona University made it more enjoyable with his knowledge and his friendly manner. Trip offered two nights in each park, allowing us to more than just sample each park. As time permitted our leader added a few extra points of intrest along the way. I just recieved a catalog of "Expeditions", offered by a well known magazine, which offers almost the same trip for the same number of days at a cost almost three times what I paid for this trip. This showed me wag a travel bargin Road Scholar trips are without skimping on the details. The trip began and ended in Las Vegas rather than two hours away in St. George, Utah, making transportation connections easier and allowing you to spend a little time before or after the trip in Las Vegas.

Program 11573 - Color Country National Parks: Zion, Bryce and Grand Canyon North Rim was a wonderful, educational trip with excellent guides. This was our first trip to these parks and also our first Road Scholar trip and we will definitely participate in another Road Scholar trip. Paul and Maxine LeBlanc

I found the "Color Country National Parks" a great way to see Zion, Bryce and the North Rim National Parks. All three places were magnificient in their own individual ways. The scenery will stay with me all my life. Transportation, accommodations and food were very satisfactory, and for a reasonable total price. The hikes were challenging enough to be fun, but not overly demanding. I strongly recommend this tour for those who want to see these three parks without having to go on their own.
