See all of our Most Popular programs.
EasyFor people looking to exercise their minds more than their bodies. There’s minimal walking and not too many stairs.
ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

This is my second Road Scholar experience. My feedback for the Great Smokey Mountains was sent successfully on the first time to you. Previously, about two weeks ago, I was not successful submitting my first evaluation for my trip to the Georgia Barrier Islands to you on a Sunday. It also was not saved to my account. Please check into why I did not transmit on a Sunday.

The Great Smoky Mountain Adventure was our first Road Scholar experience and easily exceeded our expectations. Our Lead Instructor/Guide, Lee Knight, is indeed a national treasure. He is knowledgeable, captivating, and intellectually honest. Lee has shaped my perspective on how I view things Appalachian! This is a bucket list "must!"

We selected the perfect program to enhance our understanding of an area of our wonderful country that is totally different from what we are familiar with in our area.

David from Boca Raton, FL Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 10/20/13 - 10/25/13
This was a very interesting trip into the past. I have learned more about the Cherokee Indians, the Smokies and ballad history than I thought possible. The group leader, Lee Knight, is a multi-talanted musician with a thorough knowledge of the region and indian lore. I suggest this trip for anyone curious about American history and old Scottish ballads (yes, they do intertwine).

Teri from Englewood, CO Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 10/20/13 - 10/25/13
I really felt immersed in the culture and learned so much from this program. Reading "The Cherokee Nation and the Trail of Tears" in advance really added to my enjoyment and I highly recommend it. What a fabulous adventure. You'll love Lee Knight!

Mary from Byron Center, MI Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 10/06/13 - 10/11/13
Another wonderful trip from Road Scholar. We enjoyed all of the places we traveled too, especially the time at John C. Campbell Folk School. Lee Knight's history lessons came alive through his music.

Janet from Mobile, AL Number of programs attended: 6
Date attended: 10/06/13 - 10/11/13
I really enjoyed this trip. There was beautiful scenery and even with the National parks being closed, Lee Knight, made the trip interesting and intertaining. When I returned home, I was relaxed and less stressed after a wonderfull vacation. I would recommend this trip.

really enjoyed this program..our leader, lee knight, was so very knowledgeable...music was a great highlight...because of gov't shutdown lee came up with great alternatives to our schedule...did a fine job...definitely recommend this for the historical factor alone...

Kenneth from Pisgah Forest, NC Number of programs attended: 6
Date attended: 04/14/13 - 04/19/13
Excellent in depth education about the Cherokee Indians and Appalachia.Saw gorgeous scenery and interesting places. Lee Knight is a font of information and very talented musician and shared his knowledge and talents generously. The continental breakfast was the usual fare at various motels and okay for one breakfast, but not for 5 days. We would have preferred to spend a little more and have a more traditional breakfast. Some people did not have cars and there should have been more attempt to connect people to those who had cars on the free afternoon. I was surprised at the number of folks who were stuck at the resort without transportation.

Linda from Port Washington, WI Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 04/14/13 - 04/19/13
What an AWESOME learning experience! Lee Knight was incredible with the knowledge he shared about the Appalachian culture and history. His musical talent was an added treat. Loved the songs, music, and instruments he shared with the group. The week went by amazingly fast and there was still so much more to see and learn. Thanks for another outstanding road scholar adventure:)

Janet from Grosse Pointe Farms, MI Number of programs attended: 11
Date attended: 04/14/13 - 04/19/13
A rare adventure into the hills and hollows. Leader has amazing knowledge of the culture, history and music of the area and shares his skills to make sure you appreciate it all.

Nancy from Grand Rapids, MI Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 04/07/13 - 04/12/13
What an excellent way to learn more about the Appalachian area and its people! Lee Knight shares his knowledge of and love for this culture and involves participants in developing such an appreciation for themselves. The program involves a good balance of "sit down learning" and physical activity, along with just enough free time to explore on one's own.
