ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.

If you like a variety of experiences and topics, this program is for you! We spent two days in beautiful natural places hiking and boating. Then we spent other days riding around the wonderful towns along the ocean front learning about their very unusual history and sights.

This was a very interesting learning experience. Although the weather wasn't the best, we were well taken care of and the show went on. The educators, accommodations, and group leader are all supurb. We had a wonderful experience and want to go back to Amelia Island some day.

This was a wonderful tour, and my husband and I learned more than we expected about Amelia and Cumberland Islands and the Okefenokee Swamp. Our group leader, Carl, was a knowledgeable source of information, and Stephanie, our naturalist guide for both Cumberland Island and the Okefenokee Swamp was a personable and professional leader. The weather was perfect, not hot or humid. I highly recommend this trip for anyone interested in this area of southern Georgia and Florida. One note: I would not rank this as a Moderately Challenging trip but rather somewhere between Active and Moderate.

It was my first trip with Road Scholar and definitely will not be my last trip. Spending a rainy, cool week with 33 other people visiting the beach, a fort and a swamp may not be what everyone wants to do, but it was fantastic. Be sure to bring layers and rain gear and don't worry about anything else. The facilities, food and the program instructors were all top notch and the travel companions were great, see you soon! Bonnie

even the rain in an open sided boat on the Okefenokee swamp couldn't dampen the commraderie of stalwart souls or lessen the learning experience of this trip. Well planned, well excuted program led by a concerned and conciencious leader. Recommend others try this program. walt from South Bend, IN

This is a well organized program that I would definitely recommend. I really enjoyed discovering northeast Florida, southeast Georgia which is such a beautiful and interesting area full of nature, culture and history. The hotel provides excellent amenities and is located next to a nature preserve which I really enjoyed exploring. Although the hotel is not located within walking distance of the downtown of Fernandina Beach, the hotel had a great shuttle service. Our leader did a very good job of ensuring that everyone's needs were met and made the program enjoyable. We had excellent instructors as well. I fell in love with Cumberland Island during our day trip there. I thought it was one of the most beautiful places I had ever visited. Unfortunately, bad weather made some parts of our trip more difficult, such as heavy rain during our swamp boat tour to Okefenokee Swamp. Most days we had very cold, grey weather, but we made the best of it and I appreciated being able to enjoy some new adventures. All of our trips were to wonderful locations and I came away with a greater appreciation of both this area of the U.S. and the quality of Road Scholar programs. I look forward to my next Road Scholar program, hopefully soon!

We who have been part of the northeast culture for most of our adult lives were able to absorb the lifestyle and history of the "eight-flags" section of our country, to understand how the settlements began and how the politics helped to mold the southern sections of our nation. We were exposed to the more primitive parts of Florida which allow for the growth of trees to help fuel our paper industry, to learn about the music and arts of a culture that has persisted in its appreciation of community involvement. We also appreciated the architecture and foods of the Amelia Island as it has evolved. We were appreciative of the opportunities we had for relating to knowledgable instructors as they relate to a myriad of peoples from across our country.

This is an overall excellent program and a good value. The program leadership (Tom Murray) was a strong point and the program was a good combination of hiking, lectures, humor, music and downtime. Here are a few points to consider in understanding the program. The motel choice (Residence Inn) is a great facility and is located at the start of a 2-mile out and back nature trail (flat). The Residence Inn has a free shuttle to take you anywhere on the island. Fernandina is a fun beach town with lots of diversions to do if you arrive early or stay an extra day – including beach walks, shopping, unique eateries, fish charters, bike rentals, golf and historic restored plantations. My wife and I went to one of the restaurants featured on the Food Network on Diners, Drive-ins and Dives. The visits to Cumberland Island and Okefenokee Swamp are the headliners for this program but the harbor cruise, music presentation and shrimp lecture were all outstanding (yes, even the shrimp lecture – just take my word for it). The activities start at 9:30am on two of the mornings so you can choose to sleep in or get up early to enjoy the beach or hike the greenway nature trail. The Residence Inn is about 500 yards along the sidewalk from the main beach entrance. This is an excellent program with excellent instructors.
