This trip had its ups and downs. Ups were Claudio guiding us through Pompeii, Herculaneum, Paestum and the Archaeological Museum in Naples. There could not be a better educational and thorough guide. If you are interested in history, he is tops. Vincenzo, another guide, was inept in presenting Neapolitan music. Additionally his bus guide comments on trip to Amalfi were inadequate. Most hotels in the area shut down on Nov 1 and the ones we were accommodated in, had reduced staff and service suffered. The leader, presents a positive well organized approach, but lacks the attention to detail I have experienced on most trips I have taken.

The visits to Pompeii, Herculaneum and Paestum were outstanding and our guide, Claudio Mollo was excellent. He was not only knowledgeable but patient, funny and able to maneuver us around to avoid crowds in order to maximize our viewing time. The scenic sights of the Amalfi coast and Capri and the boat ride around the Capri coast (not on the program but arranged for us by Vincenzo) were stunning. It was a wonderful alternative to 2 hours of shopping. You should include this boat ride on future tours. The visits to the two archeological museums (Naples and Paestum) were very interesting, again due to Claudio. When we went into the room containing the pornographic frescoes, some of the women complained about having to view this material. I found this attitude absurd and noticed that in spite of complaining, none of them left the room. Nevertheless I don’t remember receiving a warning of the contents of this room and perhaps there should have been one. I found the visit to the pasta factory more interesting than the visit to the farm and that more interesting than the one to the paper factory. As a suggested side trip, I would recommend the Villa Oplontis. The visit to the Tasso museum was very interesting and Alessandro was a great guide. As for the lectures, I found Candy’s the best, Michela’s a little disorganized, Linda’s too long and Vincenzo’s very disorganized and of no interest. In the lecture breaks it would be nice to have something other than water to drink. As for the food, at the Cesare Augusto it was OK and better at the Villa Romana. The dinner at Tasso was OK but the dinner at Taverna Allegra was bad. A lot of loud singing does not make up for bad pasta. The musical (forgot the name) that we went to was not worthwhile. I mean how many times do you need to sing “Faniculi Fanicula”? Jan did an outstanding job of organizing things on and off the program and shepherding us. To sum up, I thoroughly enjoyed the tour.

This is an exceptional trip in every way. Jan is awesome and the guide teams she has put together are so inspired, well informed, and special. We did so many interesting things, experienced so many different 'tastes' and features of Italy, were taught to appreciate so many facets of the history, archeology, culture, politics and, of course, amazing beauty of this special country and this 'divine Amalfi coast!' The special consideration for dietary needs was greatly appreciated! I highly recommend this with no reservations!Thank you, Jan, and RS!

Exceptional...well planned, well executed. As I scrolled through my photos it was hard to believe we had done so much! We had wonderful luck with weather. If it did rain, it passed through quickly. I would encourage taking sun hat as well as rain poncho... the last morning was torrential, but we toured the villa, found shelterand cappuccino's.

An exceptional perspective on the beauty of Southern Italy. The presentation of Pompei, Herculaneum and the Naples Archeology Museum was truly outstanding.

I concur with another reviewer that this trip was extraordinary. The guide was remarkable and went the extra mile to be sure my gluten-free diet was accommodated. The lectures were all good and the tour guides added significantly to our understanding of the archeological sites. I am so glad I chose this trip.

This was an extraordinary program that fully lived up to our expectations. The leader was awesome, as were all tour guides and presenters. The views, boat trips, experiences, and companions on our journey enriched our lives. Well worthwhile!

My husband, Michael, and I thoroughly enjoyed this trip and would encourage others to go - beautiful scenery, historical and educational excursions, delicious food and wine, fun people, well organized and informative guides. Plan to go while you are still able to manage the cobble stone surfaces, steps and stairs! Our trip in September had rain only at night and during one day's lunch time with hot to moderate temperatures. Pompeii and Herculaneum were especially crowded with cruise ship day tours but other sites such as Paestum and Ravello were less crowded. Jan Gilbert, leader, has fine-tuned this trip to perfection.

What a wonderful program "Beyond the View: The Amalfi Coast and Sorrento" - highly recommended! Jan is an outstanding tour group leader and was supported by equally wonderful sidekicks in Claudio and Vincenzo. We used all modes of transportation - bus, boat, hired car and of course our feet to take us to many most interesting sites in southern Italy. The food was outstanding and the scenery and weather spectacular!!

I loved our trip to the Amalfi Coast, Sorrento and Pompeii. We packed in so many wonderful activities such as the private violin/organ concert in Sorrento, the visit to the small farm where we made pasta and the lunch where Mussolini use to eat! In addition the expert lectures were interesting and timed perfectly--just when we needed a little rest. We had an exceptional guide and our group of 26 was a pleasure to be with.

A great intensive experience with beautiful scenery and in depth looks at both history and contemporary life. The varied activities were fun and educational; would have enjoyed larger blocks of Sorrento free time but otherwise very enjoyable.

Unbelievably amazing trip to Sorrento and the Amalfi Coast. Jan Gilbert is incredibly good. Capri was especially beautiful as were the artifacts from Pompei and Herculaneum unbelievable. It did feel like we were going to fall off the mountain when driving on the Amalfi Coast narrow pass with low railing!

This is a wonderful trip in every way! The Amalfi Coast is a breathtakingly beautiful part of Italy. Jan Gilbert (from New Zealand 40 plus years ago) is a delightful and well-organized tour leader. The various lecturers are all top-notch, and Claudio who accompanied us to the archeological sites and museums is unmatched. It was nice to be in Sorrento for 8 nights and not need to pack up frequently. Hotels were charmingly European, food (for the most part) delicious, good balance between activities and free time. Could not have asked for better weather: sunny and mid-eighties (F) the entire time. As always, the other participants were well-traveled, well-educated and interesting. This trip is a winner in every way. I highly recommend it!

If you have the Amalfi Coast on your list, this program is perfect! So many different ways were presented to have the group enjoy and learn about this beautiful and historically rich part of Italy. It is for people who have good mobility for walking among the ruins. Guides and presenters were outstanding.

This was the first of what we had hoped to be many trips with Road Scholar - our “test” trip. The dismal experience with Road Scholar Travel overshadowed an otherwise wonderful trip. The group leader, lecturers, and especially the guides were all exceptional – knowledgeable, approachable and enthusiastic. The sites were stunning, and we were thrilled to meet so many delightful fellow travelers. Our return flight was cancelled. RS Travel never contacted us. We only found out about the cancellation when Air France emailed us. We repeatedly emailed RS Travel to get rebooking status. At this point we had no way home. It was impossible to reach an actual person. After receiving no response to our many emails, we called the emergency number (using hotel phone, no internatl calling on cell). Hours later Samantha returned our call, and said she’d get back to us via email soon with flight info.We never heard back from her or anyone from RS Travel. Hours later RS Travel emailed our group leader (not us) stating we’d have to stay overnight in Naples, find hotel ourselves, and get our own transportation to/from airport, and pay for everything ourselves. We used RS Travel because they are affiliated with the Road Scholar, and we (mistakenly) thought that they would they would provide valuable assistance in exactly this type of situation, with access to actual person, customer service that recognized the urgency of our situation, and prompt help in rebooking. Wrong on all counts. Instead, they provided no support, were almost impossible to reach and didn’t even attempt to keep us updated. We fully understand that flight cancellations are unavoidable, but how a travel service responds to the problem can be controlled. We should have ended our vacation refreshed and rejuvenated from the exceptional trip, instead we left incredibly stressed and disappointed. Do not use Road Scholar Travel expecting professional, personal service during a travel emergency.

Road Scholar's response:
We deeply regret the trouble you had in working with our Travel Services department to address the flight cancellation on your program. Our flight specialists successfully serve thousands of travelers every year on international flights and while this does not excuse the problems that came up with your airfare, I do wish to note that we immediately recognized the problem and issued a goodwill voucher of $1,000.00 to your account for the trouble. We always aim to provide exceptional customer service and again, apologize for any inconvenience you faced.

This program was everything we hoped for, and more. An amazing amount of different experiences were packed into our 12 days, thanks to our energetic and organized leader, Jan Gilbert (who is also personable and funny). It was nice to be able to stay just in two hotels, most of the time in Sorrento, a delightful place in itself. The places we visited were gorgeous and the archaeology fascinating. I want also to mention the brilliant lectures we had on Greek and Roman art and architecture and on Italian history and politics. The food was a mixed experience; we had some very good meals at restaurants included in the program (as well as some on our own), but some of the hotel meals were mediocre.

Besides the spectacular views of the Sorrentine and Amalfi coastlines, the terraced lemon and olive groves, the wonderfully flavorful food and the terrific people, Wes and I adored climbing Vesuvio. (Mt Vesuvius) This wasn't on the planned trip, however on our free-Saturday morning of the first week about ten people from out group of 27 set out. It was easy taking a train from Sorrento and then a bus to the base of Vesuvio. Giant all-terrain vehicles brought us near the summit. The hike was about 40 minutes from the drop-off point. The views on the climb were incredible. The trail is moderately steep with a rope railing and is lined with yellow and purple flowers growing in the grey lava soil. It was exciting to think about the historic significance of where we were hiking, especially since we'd been to Pompeii the day before. Altogether, it was a side-trip that made the entire visit even more special.

Louise and I thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Italy. The sheer variety of experiences was amazing; something different every day and yet we never felt overwhelmed. The lectures were informative and the guides highly competent. Jan is one of a kind in the most positive sense. She even came down to say goodbye at 3 am; what a woman. I am now going through several hundred photos and re-living the experience. A special thanks to Paula for taking the time to photograph all of us.

Barbara from Albuquerque. I agree with everything John from OR said except it was my 20th or more trip with Elderhostel and my first with Road Scholar. Thanks to everyone for using their arm when I encountered a stair without a banister. Jan is the best organizer and I looked forward to each day's stunning outfit.

My first trip to Italy and I was not disappointed. We had a wonderful time touring, sightseeing, experiencing, learning and visiting. My Italian improved slightly and on either end of the trip we struck out on our own with delightful results. I did not know exactly what to expect as this was a first Road Scholar program for me. So I'll compare it to other travel programs I've been taken. I found it to be extremely well organized and at the same time I was able to relax and enjoy the wonderful surroundings in Sorrento and Minori. The lodging was comfortable and the meals were a social time we thoroughly enjoyed. I have already recommended this program to my friends that travel. Many thanks to Jan, our energetic leader, who shared her Italy with us all. The guides and speakers added a multi textured level of understanding about Italy in general and the places we visited specifically. In telling about the trip to friends they commented "It sounds like the trip of a lifetime!" I will have to admit it was.

Very enjoyable program. Everything was well organized and handled beautifully. Only one complaint: the food was mostly uninteresting and unappealing. I had always heard that the Italians eat well but from this limited experience I must strongly disagree. The hotel food was plentiful but had no flavor at all. The restaurants we were taken to were also disappointing.

We very much enjoyed the entire program and wished the entire family could have enjoyed it with us. Claudio is so knowledgeable and passionate about the ruins and history of the area. Several times we felt we were living it in the moment. Jan is an absolute joy and is excited about sharing her Italy with you. The participants get so much from her and she goes above and beyond all expectations. Michela, Candi, Vincenzo, Linda and Enrica also bring passion and interest to their talks. The hotels are wonderful as are the staff and food. Since we have been home we have recommended the program to everyone we have spoken to. This was our first tour of any kind and will certainly look into tours again and will check our Road Scholar tours first.
