See our Small Group programs.

ModerateThese programs get you on your feet and include activities such as walking up to a mile in a day through a city and standing in a museum for a few hours.
ActiveFor people who enjoy walking as much as two miles a day, perhaps to explore historic neighborhoods or a nature trail.
Moderately ChallengingFor hardy explorers who enjoy a good physical challenge, spending most of their days on the go.
ChallengingGet ready to keep up with our highest-energy group. These demanding — and rewarding — programs are for seasoned outdoor enthusiasts.
If you’re looking for a more flexible schedule with ample independent time and several meals on your own, then our FLEX learning adventures are made for you.

The Best of Ireland trip, the last one offered in October, was excellent and I especially want to thank our Group Leader, Stephen Delaney, for making it such an enjoyable, well organized experience. The trip covered the parts of Ireland I had always been most interested in and I was not disappointed. I was really pleased to have most of a day on Inishmore, Aran Islands, an exceptional experience. The group was congenial and traveled well together. We covered many miles but the bus travel is intermixed with plenty of opportunities to walk and there is lots of free time. A great tour.

The Ireland trip was wonderful and I am very impressed with the Road Scholar folks who put it together. It was a nice mix of scenery and history and culture, scheduled activities and free time, wonderful guides and lecturers and walks, picturesque villages and walkable cities, and great food.

My wife and I really enjoyed this program. The trip hit many of the highlights one wants to see on a trip to Ireland. The scenery was beautiful (you have to see it to belive it) and the people were friendly. We loved the history and culture experienced through our travels and the expert instructors. Our group leader, Hollie Kearns, was outstanding. We strongly recommend this trip to anyone who has an interest in seeing Ireland.

A great overview of Ireland's best places, with a lot of free time to explore on your own.

Loved staying in the small villages and meeting the locals. Beautiful scenery and great experiences. I learned so much on the program than if I had just traveled on my own.

My recent trip to Ireland was incredible. The countryside is beautiful, the people generous and warm and our guide Alan was a wonderful young man who made this trip a dream come true! Thank you Road Scholar for a great experience!

This trip to Ireland was my lifelong dream come true. Everyone in my group agreed that we could not agree on the best part of the trip--every location was so beautiful. Our group leader, Hollie Kearns, could not have been more knowledgeable, sweet or caring. I have been thinking of everything I saw since returning home.

Katherine from Atlanta, GA Number of programs attended: 1

This was my first Roads Scholar trip and I was delighted with everything, especially Stephen Delaney's leadership, local knowledge and warm personality. He's the best tour guide I've ever experienced. Ireland is as beautiful, if not more so, than all the descriptions I've read. The other participants were great travel companions as well. I highly recommend this trip and look forward to more Roads Scholar trips.

Elizabeth from Chico, CA Number of programs attended: 2

This trip was exceptional. It is tough to come up with enough superlatives to really express what a fantastic adventure it was. It was fun, interesting, and educational. Our group leader, Stephen Delaney, was such a great ambassador for Ireland and for this trip. If I had gone to Ireland on my own, I would have missed so many of the experiences that Road Scholar had to offer. Each day was a fun adventure with experiences I never expected to have. Our fellow travelers were a great bunch and we had a wonderful camaraderie. It was an experience I'll treasure forever. I cannot recommend this trip highly enough to do it justice. Thanks!

From being greeted by name at the airport (I didn't have my Road Scholar badge on), to wonderful experiences with new friends and our group leader, to getting insider advice for my independent time after the program, this was far more than I hoped for. This tour made my first trip to Ireland an unforgettable time. I'm not sure how it could be better.

My wife and I just got home from completing, The Best of Ireland Tour. This was our first group tour and not to an area where either my wife and I have ancestry. However, we made life long friends we intend to stay in touch with. The food exceeded my expectations as did the quality of the educational portions of the tour with local experts! We'll be back! I am so glad that I took this tour. I met so many nice folks. The food was delicious, the locals friendly and the weather was fine. Our tour leader was a delight.

Ken from San Luis Obispo, CA Number of programs attended: 19
Date attended: 09/05/13 - 09/19/13
This is a smooth and well-polished program that visits most of the major sights in Ireland, as well as gems off the beaten tourist track such as Killybegs and Glencolmcille in County Donegal (which was my favorite). Our tour leader, Joe O'Regen, substituted at the last minute and did a super outstanding job and gave very knowledgeable informative talks about Irish history and culture. Overall, deserves a top rating.

Edward from Pompano Beach, FL Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 08/08/13 - 08/22/13
Our trip to Ireland was wonderful. It was exactly what we hoped for. The accommodations, transportation, and pace were great. Stephen, our leader, is the best there is. He knows it all when it comes to the history and culture of the island. He also has a terrific Irish wit. It is a trip for those who like the outdoors, learning, and living in the very friendly Irish culture. It should not be missed by anyone of Irish decent - even if just a wee bit Irish!

Patricia from Dartmouth, NS Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 08/08/13 - 08/22/13
The Best of Ireland was wonderful. This was largely because the leader was Stephen Delaney who is smart, informative, funny and considerate. All of the leaders in individual regions was excellent.

When we choose a Road Scholar program, we expect the best. The Best of Ireland was truly the best. We also receive companionship from the participants that can be even better than the program. People who look at the world as an experience to be treasured are also those who look at one another as an opportunity to become friends Hopefully more and more programs like The Best of Ireland will appear in our catalogs

You name it: small towns, rural villages, breath-taking scenery, the cultural center of Ireland, history, and more. It was all there for us. Great leader and great guest experts accompanied us around this beautiful island gem. Fantastic trip!

Ireland is everything I have heard and more. So the number of sheep outnumber people, but the latter are far more friendly and outgoing. Hotels that we used were first rate, and all were comfortable, although all were also a bit too warm at night. If one has a limited picture of the country, he or she is in for a surprise. This best of Ireland trips is all advertised and even more. We gladly would return, even on the same tour. Dick and Mary Raub, Portland, OR

This was our first Road Scholar tour, so we didn't know what to expect. We were delighted. There is a perfect balance of planned activity and free time, and the group size (24) was large enough to have good diversity of backgrounds and interests but not so large that it was unwieldy when traveling. I feel like we got to see so much of the country on this tour, and got access to so many sites, guides, educators, and activities that we never could have found or done on our own. And Stephen Delaney was a magnificent guide - incredibly knowledgeable about the country and its history but also very fun and easy-going. Getting to know him and our fellow group members over the course of the tour was as rewarding and enjoyable as getting to know this beautiful country! We'll definitely take another Road Scholar tour!

Alan from Montgomery Village, MD Number of programs attended: 1

Stephen Delaney our tour guide is truly the best of Ireland. His knowledge insights and ability to lead are in a class by itself. I know speaking from many on the tour he made this trip an experience of a life time.

The Best of Ireland Trip . was wonderful. I enjoyed many wonderful experiences and getting to know some of the program participants as well. Sarah Clancy was a very informative, organized and fun guide that made our trip quite smooth. This is a definite must for people who want a varied and in depth visit to the lovely country of Ireland.

JOSEPHINE from Long Beach, CA Number of programs attended: 1
Date attended: 09/27/12 - 10/11/12
We took this trip 9/27/12 to 10/25/12. It was an almost perfect mix of free time and guided tours. Our guide, Sara Clancy, was well organized and well-informed. The local experts were just that, local and expert. The hotels were good and well located for exploring on our free time. It was very helpful to spend at least two nights in the same hotel and limited the packing and unpacking.

Damon from Wooster, OH Number of programs attended: 4

I couldn't have been better-pleased with this trip. It was a perfect blend of travel and staying put, rural and urban, listening and doing, off the beaten track and popular, free time and scheduled activity, home visit and public places. The accommodations were universally comfortable and central and the food was delicious. The local guides were quirky (each in a different way), knowledgeable, funny, and grounded in the local sod. Our leader, Paddy Naughton, was fantastic--easy-going yet firmly in control, passionate about his country, open about his own views and experiences, well-educated and articulate about local and national history, caring and concerned, and always accommodating. The group was great too--we had only 16 in the last trip of the season, and that enabled us to get acquainted and move together relatively easy. Even the weather cooperated for the most part, giving us just enough "Irish mist" to remind us where we were.
