If you stay in Ballyshannon (instead of Killybegs), I recommend using your free night to visit the Thatch Pub up the street from the hotel. Classic Irish pub, very friendly, and if you are as lucky as I was you will enjoy music, stories, jokes, and dancing, but most of all, you will enjoy the company of Irish men and women. Then on the next night when the whole group goes there, you will be heartily welcomed back.

"The Best of Ireland" delivers! A wonderful overview of the land and its people! If you are lucky, you will have Stephen Delaney as your tour guide! The Emerald Isle is magic!

The best of Ireland - how would I know? We visited mostly the west coast and were enthralled by its beauty, magnificent ruggedness and the genuine friendliness of its people. We learned so much from our instructors, taxi drivers train ride neighbors, pub staff and our guides. The beer, the whisky and the glorious seafood we sampled is possibly reason enough to revisit the beautiful island. We were especially fortunate with the weather and feel we have truly visited one of the most remarkable quietly brilliant wonders of this earth.

My trip ran beautifully, had the perfect guide, Maeve Henry, and a very congenial group. Nonetheless, I would recommend coming with a partner, friend, or group of friends if possible, rather than alone. I like it that we had plenty of timeon our own, but it could be lonely. I am someone in my group will send a photo of me reading on Yeat'S tomb at Drumclif.

Be prepared for rain! The tour was enjoyable and a good learning experience. Some reorganization of the Dublin days is called for, including an initial tour of the city so the participants can get an overall feel for the city.

This trip was fantastic! Our guide was Beibhinn O'Connor and she was excellent. She shared so much information with us about history, politics, current affairs, etc. and all of it was presented in a very balanced manner. I learned so much from her. I loved her warm, engaging manner! She made this trip the excellent trip that it was. She was even able to line up an inexpensive laundry service for us about half-way through the trip, which was much appreciated. This trip began on the west coast of Ireland, where we saw so much natural beauty, and I enjoyed it so much! We all learned to love the GAA and Hurling due to Beibhinn's enthusiasm. I can't imagine a better trip for my first Road Scholar trip. In my opinion, Beibhinn can practically walk on water! Everything about the trip went off without a hitch.

I loved this trip. The country’s beauty goes without saying, and we saw much of it – from the seacoast vistas of County Kerry, the Cliffs of Moher and the rocky shores of the Aran Islands to the cosmopolitan landscapes of Dublin and Galway. Cottages, castles and keeps, neolithic court cairns, cathedrals and abbeys, this trip had them all. Even better than the landscapes though, were the insights into culture and history we acquired. We met and learned from local folk at every stop- historians, and botanists, hurling players and Irish dancers, experts on Joyce and Yeats, fishermen and sheep farmers. Accommodations and travel arrangements were comfortable, and making everything run smoothly was our incredible guide, Beibhinn O’Conner. She enlivened our bus trips with lectures on Irish language, politics, history and current events, and even arranged some special stops and activities based on the interests of the members of the tour. This trip has a nice balance between planned time, and time to explore on your own. Beibhinn was invaluable in providing guidance for that free time – suggestions about what to see, where to eat, even how to get your laundry done. And, she has a wonderful sense of humor!!!!

I learned a great deal about Ireland (history, literature, sports, music, etc.) and gained respect for the Irish people, history and culture. I liked the flexibility and free time very much; it gave a good balance to a well-planned program, which exceeded my expectations. We had a great group - and even great weather!

This was hands down the best Road Scholar trip we have had! The itinerary is perfect, the balance between city and country just right, and the tour leader, Stephen, is a master! Everything - hotel, food, buses and drivers, speakers - were all outstanding. And Stephen's wonderful jokes were the icing on the cake. Can't recommend this trip enough!

From start to finish this program was perfectly planned and organized. Our guide, Stephen, was remarkable. Extremely knowledgeable, kind, and humorous. He always had excellent suggestions for our free time and knew the best restaurants and places for us to go to and explore. I had visited Ireland before as a tourist but this program gave me the opportunity to see the "real Ireland", interact with the people and see places that I had not seen before and have experiences that I would not have had on my own. It was everything that I had hoped it would be.

Judith from Saskatoon,SK. This was a very well planned and executed trip.Facilities, food, program and such all worked well. The group size also worked well....most mingled and many vibrant conversations were had.Sarah Clancy with her vast political and historical knowledge ,served as the consistent thread which brought together the many experiences that we had in the countryside.Sarah's stories warmed us, especially on the few cold windy days at the beginning of the trip. All the expert speakers shared their knowledge with wit and humour. The archaeologist, who took us to the Burren on one of those cold and rainy days, even managed to have us laughing as we climbed through rocks, wind and rain. All very good. However, I would have preferred one more day in Dublin with one less in the countryside.

Gail from Saskatoon, SK Number of programs attended: 1

Well-chosen sites and activities. Enough free time. Group size not too big. Interesting and knowledgeable local guides. Our main tour guide, Sarah, was supremely competent, enthusiastic, witty, and generous with her amazing depth of knowledge. Fun activities, amazing natural beauty, spectacular prehistoric sites, excellent food!

Arthur from Lexington, MA Number of programs attended: 1

Ireland is a good starting point on foreign travel...since it is not so very foreign. If you are lucky you have a guide like Sarah Clancy whose enthusiasm and knowledge enrich your experience. If you have done extensive foreign travel you might find Ireland a little less scintillating than many other possible destinations.

Linda from Ottawa Hills, OH Number of programs attended: 1

Even though a medical emergency sent me home early, I loved this tour for all the reasons expressed by others. Sarah Clancy was just the best and all of our 22 participants enjoyed each other throughout the tour. Truly feel this is the way to really get to know a country and its people.

Brian from Glendale, AZ Number of programs attended: 1

Great program. Cohesive, fun group, great sampling of city life and country life. Sarah was best guide I've ever experienced in many years of travel. Experiences like dinner in a private home, school concert, and lunch play were nice touches, as well as expert guides such as the Joyce scholar. It was delightful to visit the home of my ancestors. I want to go back!

I loved this first visit to Ireland! Our small group became a family as we visited an elementary school, were invited to a dinner at a local Killarney home, had a few college age girls demonstrate Irish dancing in our hotel just for us as we traveled north along the west coast of the country and then across to Dublin. Each day was packed with beautiful landscapes and cute little towns where we had lunch and were given time to wander, take photos and shop. Our escort, Stephen, was everything one could wish for!

He is efficient, knowledgable, helpful, and has a great sense of humor. His system for checking in at hotels is outstanding. He enjoys people and his work! The local guides on this program deserve a mention. They were very good. They had lived in the area they guided in most of their lives and so were familiar with it's history and problems. Also with changes that had occurred and the problems they were now facing. They added a lot to the program.

Marc from Washington, DC Number of programs attended: 4
Date attended: 07/10/14 - 07/24/14
This program is an excellent introduction to Ireland and its SCENIC highlights. The latter means it focuses largely on the West Coast. I recommend you combine it with independent travel on either end: 1) arrive in Shannon 1-2 days early to recover from jet lag AND to see nearby Bunratty Castle and Limerick before joining the tour back at Shannon airport. After the tour, stay on in Dublin several days to see more of that city and to do several excellent day-trip tours to major attractions near Dublin which the Roads Scholar trip does not cover. Combining the Roads Scholar tour and this self-travel will give you an excellent overview of Ireland in just under three weeks.

Pat from South Dartmouth, Massachusetts: Number of programs attended: 2 Date attended: 06/12/14 - 06/26/14 This trip was so much more than I expected. I loved ALL of it. It was wonderful to be near the area my ancestors emigrated from; the physical beauty of the country took my breath away; there was a wonderful balance of scheduled activity and free time with sensitivity to endurance and integration of information; the local guides were superb; the 'unexpected' handled with aplomb and delight; the food delicious. I will never forget the walk with our Joycean scholar through Dublin and falling in love again with Yeats' poetry being read during a candlelight dinner. One free night in Dublin I saw "The Aristocrats" at the Abbey Theatre. It was a special night because the President of Ireland's arrival was announced and everyone rose to greet him. Later I took a taxi back to the Hotel and heard the cab drivers' point of view!! Thank you Road Scholar for giving us Stephen Delaney, our tour guide. He was a gem!

This trip enhanced the sightseeing trip I took to Ireland last year, but going into detail about sights and things we just briefly saw last year. I travel alone but am never "lonely". Wonderful experience.

This was a fantastic trip! Alan Ralph was a great leader and looked after us very well. He is a great problem solver, listener and teacher. We saw a great deal of Ireland, the seaside, countryside and cities. We had a great time meeting and dining with families. We got to know our host family and enjoyed a very interesting meeting exchanging opinions and getting answers to our many questions. Ireland is beautiful and I think most people would enjoy this program. There is a great deal of walking, so anyone considering this program should keep that in mind.

We loved our trip to Ireland with Road Scholar. We enjoyed the variety of experiences that were organized for us, the chance we had to interact with some of the local people, the beauty of the countryside and the friendliness of the people. Dublin was the icing on the cake -- a very beautiful and sophisticated city. Our group leader, Sarah Clancy, was absolutely fantastic -- a born leader with charm and wit to spare. She made every experience more fun.

This program was so interesting with a nice blend of guided and free time. We developed a real appreciation of The Republic of Ireland and its people.

This tour provided an excellent insight into the country, its people and their way of life. Beibhinn O'Connor was an outstanding tour leader and the tour utilized additional knowledgable local Irish experts every day. These experts were passionate and enthusiastic about their subject and their country. This tour is an outstanding way to visit Ireland and may you be fortune enough to have Bebhinn O'Conner as your leader

This tour was fantastic and our tour director, Beibhinn O'Connor was amazing. If you do an Ireland tour, cross your fingers that you have her! I learned so much about the country, the language, the politics and the social issues and saw just incredibly beautiful places and things.

What a great time! And Sarah Clancey, our group leader was wonderful…charming, smart and funny! For me, the best parts were the visits to the beautiful countryside and small towns. Our speakers were informative and entertaining and added immensely to our history of each of the areas we were in. I highly recommend this tour.
