This trip was amazing. It exceeded my expectations. The landscape, the wildlife and the people were incredible. The accommodations were varied and I enjoyed all the new experiences.

It is a fantastic program - the weather in late Oct and early Nov was great - saw the end of the dry season and the greening up after a little rain - only saw one mosquito in the Nairobi hotel - good to go a few days early to rest up and see things not on the program and RS will help you arrange this

Our safari from October 5-19, 2015 was a terrific experience, due in no small part to the skill and personality of our guide Philip Keter. Because of his expertise, we saw all the game one would hope – lions, leopards, elephants, rhinos, etc. – and in various settings. In addition, Philip is a cosmopolitan and informed person – we learned about Kenyan and Tanzanian politics as well. The accommodations were excellent, ranging from safari camps with rooms the size of some New York City studio apartments to luxury lodges such as the Serena at Ngorongoro Crater. The food was fine. And six is a perfect size group to travel with. I would suggest bringing a bathing suit since a mid-day dip into the ample pool at Kilima Safari Camp is a great way to beat the heat.

This was the time the trip of a lifetime. It's hard to describe a trip like this and do it justice. You will be enlightened in ways you could never imaging. All we can say is go.

Ruth from Grand Rapids, MI Number of programs attended: 2

The statement in pre tour literature , 'able to walk 2 miles' does not indicate the exhaustion level of this trip.and in fact we never had to walk 2 miles. But we did have to ride 6-8 hours/day over ' African Massage ' roads i.e., wash board/huge pot hole roads the participants in our group were extremely tired . The excitement of the viewing experience did help to negate this feeling somewhat .

This program exceeded our expectations in EVERY way. Our guide, James Mungai, made the trip truly memorable and spectacular. We'd highly recommend this trip! Great guide, wonderful opportunities to see wildlife, great accommodations and food, and a seamless level of organization that made the trip spectacular. Sign up!!!!!!!

This was an amazing trip which exceeded my expectations about being able to observe so many different wildlife species in their natural environment. Several of the days involved long hours of travel over unpaved terrain, which some might find challenging, but it was definitely worth it!

Andrew from Clarkston, MI Number of programs attended: 3

Road Scholar not only brings education into traveling, they also make the overall experience as easy as possible for the participants. This trip definitely exceeded my expectations for seeing and learning about the animals of the Great Migration.

Gwen from Clarkston, MI Number of programs attended: 3
Date attended: 09/21/15 - 10/05/15
The animal interactions went way beyond my expectations! The hours in the jeeps on very bumpy, dusty unpaved roads were long, usually 6 - 8 hours per day, and uncomfortable. Because of that, the 4.8 activity rating is legitimate! The number of up close and personal interactions with not just all of the big 5 but also the big 9 made the discomfort a secondary memory.

Hali from The Hills, TX Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 09/07/15 - 09/21/15
It was a wonderful trip. We saw the big five, the wildebeests and zebras crossing the Mara River, thousands of animals grazing on the plain, and the unforgettable vast land under the blue sky during the day and ever changing clouds in the late afternoon. The accommodations and food were very good. Only a few mosquitos around but we did wear bug repellent sprayed cloths. 40% DEET was only used once or twice. Diarrhea is a concern so bringing the appropriate medicine is important. Philip Ketter is an excellent guide that helped us to see everything we expected to see.

Daniel from Rochester, MN Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 09/07/15 - 09/21/15
The game drives were the best part of this adventure but getting there on Tanzanian roads is a challenge. The unpaved roads were potholed, washboard, and rutted. They make for long days driving between sites.

Ann from Verona, WI Number of programs attended: 2
Date attended: 09/07/15 - 09/21/15
Just got back from the trip, 9/7 - 9/21. Wonderful, if a bit dusty as we were traveling at the end of the dry season. No problems with bugs so we had WAY more repellent than we ever used. Sunscreen is a must! All site have laundry available for very reasonable prices. If you take cash (a very good idea) it should be in $1, $5, or $10 bills at the most. All places we went took US currency although you may pay slightly higher prices that way. ($4 vs 300 KS for a drink). The exchange rate is ~ 100 KS to $1. Have extra camera batteries so you can charge one while using the other. Make sure you have the correct adapters for each country. Generators are only on certain hours of the day so plan ahead. All in all, it was a WONDERFUL trip. Philip Ketter is amazing. He knows everything about the animals, birds, plants, people & history of the countries. He also seems to know someone everywhere we went.

A wonderful way to see so many animals up close and the daily rhythm of their activities. The land is so beautiful too. Some of these animals may be disappearing in the future, so this is the trip of a lifetime.

Africa is really an amazing place to experience. On this trip we experienced the animals, the topography, the life of the aboriginal natives, and the feel of the hustle and bustle of town and country life in a modern African country.

Lynn from Winder, GA 07/13/15-07/27/15 You're in good hands with James Kiptoo! He took such good care of us responding to our needs, wishes, and incessant questions with poise and patience. Our driver William took us where the brave dare not go without a single wrong turn and found all the critters we wanted to see..no matter how well hidden! The dusty washboard roads were every bit as rough as advertised, but I was so enthralled with seeing the fabulous animals I didn't care. Go before you get too old and broke down to do it!

This was a very exciting program and had so much to offer. We were able to see so very many animals which to me was very exciting. Also learning about the Maasi people from them was very good and interesting. They were a most welcoming and friendly people and I was amazed at their command of the English language.

No words, photos or movies can express the magic of Africa. You have to experience it. And what an experience our group had with Paul Kirui! Everyday, we learned about the wildlife and ecosystem of Kenya and Tanzania thru his vast knowledge of the Countries. His leadership and psychological skills guided us in delicate situations. His great sense of humor and wise philosophy of life animated the conversations during meal time. Wilfred and Eric, our driver guides were a perfect complement to Paul and excellent drivers. The accommodations were very nice in each stop and the food was excellent specially at Speke Bay lodge and Fig Tree Camp. The school visit was a delight with all those young children in uniform, eager to learn. Some tips : If you have asthma or sinus problem, bring MASKS. A self inflated pillow is helpful for the back. Any color of cloth will do. Tse Tse flies will not bother you. Best currency rate for Kenya is at the airport ATM. Dollars or Credit Cards are accepted everywhere. Shopping stops : - Masai Village : little bargaining but consider it as a gift for the Village. - on the road to Nairobi : nice souvenirs but tough bargaining to reach 1/2 the price asked. - in Nairobi, at lunch time : no bargaining, nice price, nice souvenirs. - In Nairobi Hotel : good price - not a big selection

This trip was truly a trip of a lifetime. I'm sharing my photos and stories with friends and family and reliving the beauty of Kenya and Tanzania.....the people, the animals and the vastness of the countryside. I highly recommend the experience to anyone who is open to learning more about this very different part of our world.

Tiajuana from Aiken, SC Number of programs attended: 2

Experiencing the vast plains, the approaching storms, the roadside markets, and the animals made this my most unusual adventure yet. I recognized scenes similar to movies, but I have such a different interpretation now because I've been in the animals' habitat, visited with the Maasai and others, and survived the traffic in Nairobi. Buffet meals, hot showers, and turn-down service each evening was more than I expected. Loved the baby elephants and the kneeling warthogs! Will encourage others to experience Kenya and Tanzania.

Robert from Sandy Springs, GA Number of programs attended: 2

Wonderful experience. Saw every animal we hoped for, and then some. You won't believe the quantity of animals and it is educational/fun to see them going on about their daily lives in the wild. Great guides. Fun fellow tour members. Educational about the animals, people and geography. Excellent accommodations. Food not a highlight. Be prepared for long days, dusty, very rough roads, and a wonderful time. But bring extra money (USD) for tips and purchases. ATMs and credit card machines not part of the local flora and fauna. We believed that Road Scholar covered gratuities but locals expected more. Overall just a fantastic experience!

As an 80 year-old single woman, I was a little apprehensive about taking this trip. But the drivers adopted me and called me "mamma" the whole trip, helping me get in and out of the safari vehicle every day. The other participants on the trip also looked out for me. It was a wonderful trip and I wouldn't want anyone's age or being single to stop them from going.

Dan from Austin, Texas Number of programs attended: 1 Date attended: 09/08/14-09/22/14 Extraordinary trip! Can't imagine we will ever take a trip again that will be as remarkable as this one. It was like watching the best of Discovery Channel and National Geographic in 360 but better. Paul Kirui our guide was exceptional. He has to be the best in all of Africa. Don't deny yourself - GO!

Gwen from Cincinnati, OH Number of programs attended: 1

This program was amazing and I recommend anyone that can go, should go! A few days were rather long in the car, but well worth it to get from one place to another. All the accommodations were amazing, the food at all the lodges was terrific (always a buffet so everyone could find something great to eat), The drivers, lecturers, guides, hotel staff, etc were all wonderful. I highly recommend this trip to EVERYONE! I am counting my pennies to return to these beautiful countries!

Visiting and learning about other cultures is something I value in foreign travel. The advantage with Road Scholar is that its learning opportunities help one better understand something unfamiliar.

Thomas from Seattle, WA Number of programs attended: 3

I've traveled a lot and am not usually easy to impress, but this safari proved to be the trip of a lifetime for me. Paul Kirui may be the only person in the world who combines such deep knowledge of African flora and fauna, professional photographic skills, fluency in at least three languages, and the interpersonal skills to act as a kindly shepherd to a dozen independent-minded tourists and help them bond as a group. The photographs that he and his colleagues set up for us are ones that I will treasure for a lifetime, enriched by a greater understanding of how the many pieces of the equatorial African ecosystem fit together. We were so lucky to have Paul as a group leader.

As to creature comforts, accommodations all along the way were clean, comfortable, and often in spectacular settings--e.g., on the south rim of Ngorongoro Crater, with a panoramic view of the whole crater floor from every room. Staff at the lodges and all four of our drivers were unfailingly courteous, friendly, and professional. I'd go back in a heartbeat!

Bruce from Millbury, MA Number of programs attended: 3

Wow! Those three letters do a better job of explaining our experience than any amount of detailed explanations. The people, places, flora, fauna, accommodations and experiences exceeded our expectations.

Pure magic. And if Paul Kirui hasn't already been named a national treasure, he should be. Kudos to Road Scholar and Paul for planning this amazing adventure. There just aren't superlatives enough.

David from Concord, MI Number of programs attended: 10

This trip exceeded our expectations; no matter how many nature shows watched on TV or in the movies, there is nothing to compare to actually seeing the vastness of the East African plains and its animals in person. And in person it was - we even had two lion cubs crawl under the van! Everything about this program was outstanding - organization, accommodations, our guide, the drivers, our fellow participants and variety and number of animals. Paul Kirui, our guide, was one of the best we have had on over 10 Road Scholar trips. A gentle, quiet, competent man, he added so much to the trip. Highly recommended program.

Jeff from Lewisburg, PA Number of programs attended: 4

This is an excellent trip for viewing African wildlife and fantastic landscapes. The accommodations are excellent and everyone we met was very helpful and friendly. It is not at all strenuous beyond lots of riding on very bumpy roads-which we really didn't mind since we were seeing elephants and zebra and giraffes in their homes! Highly recommended.

Ron from Oak Ridge, TN Number of programs attended: 8
Date attended: 07/14/14 - 07/28/14
This is an exceptional program for anyone interested in African wildlife as well as seeing how the native Africans live in both the cities and the bush areas. I would highly recommend this program to anyone who can tolerate the rough and dusty roads which to me just added to the experience.

Barbara from Loganville, GA Number of programs attended: 1

Had a fabulous time. So many animals. Paul Kirui was a wonderful and knowledgeable guide. He went out of his wa to attend to every detail. Great fellow travelers..what a good mix. Could not believe how close we were to the animals. The staff at every lodge were gracious and kind. The drivers were also helpful and accommodating. RoadScholar does it right...and you come home really feeling as though you have been on a fabulous vacation.

This was a fantastic experience. Not only did we see a wide variety of African wildlife in thier natural enviornment, but we also saw a part of rural Africa that is not normally seen by visitors.

Terry from North Vancouver, BC Number of programs attended: 2

Great program. Trip of a life time. Saw the big five and much more. Within 15 feet of Lions, Cheetahs Elephants, etc. The animals were at peace with the people and were not afraid of them. Wonderful guide and drivers. Stayed at scenic lodges. Interacted and danced with the Masai people. Roads were rough but the travel was always worth the effort. Great group of fellow travellers added to the excitement. Eastern Africa is beautiful and blessed with wonderful people.

When you observe the sun rise over Mt. Kilimanjaro and set over the plains of the Serengeti you understand your place among this vast and extraordinary landscape is fleeting. The experiences give one time to pause and put in perspective the beauty of the cycle of life, from silently watching a new born Wildebeest get up triumphantly and trot off with her mother to a female lion taking down a Gazelle, it all played out in front of us. The shared time spent taking pictures, and sharing observations while living six and seven hours a day in vehicles created a bond among the group that carried us easily through the many places and over the roads of some of the most beautiful scenery in the world.

Julia from Richardson, TX Number of programs attended: 3
